FROM SPACE                                                                                                     continued

While it is true that every ancient race has its own version of such a disaster and its
own particular name for a heroic Noah, its means of salvation and site of debarkation,
still, it has been the Ark on the mountains of Ararat that has captured popular imagi-
nation for thousands of years.

There have been alleged visits to and sightings of Noah's Ark through the centuries,
down through two World Wars.

Russian pilots in World War I claimed to have seen it in a mountain lake, which was
later visited by an expedition whose records have been lost.

During World War II, both Russian and American pilots claim to have seen and photo-
graphed the Ark, although no authenticated photograph is at present available.

According to rumors current among American pilots stationed in Turkey during the Cold
War, photographs of Noah's Ark were taken by U-2 pilots in the course of they high-
flight reconnaissance missions over the USSR.  But none of these, if they do exist, have
been made public.
