FROM SPACE                                                                                                     continued

Photography from the skies has succeded in finding an entire lost city in North Italy, con-
cealed for centuries under water and mud.

Spina was a large city of the mysterious Etruscans, the lords of most of Italy, before the
Romans overcame them.

Their origin and early history is unknown and their language undeciphered.  The section of
Italy where they ruled was called Tyrrhenia, specifically mentioned by Plato in the CRITIA
dialogue, when he stated that "the island of Atlantis....[had] subjected the parts of Libya
within the Columns of hercules as far as Egypt and of Europe as far as TYRRHENIA."

Little is known about the Etruscans, except from their tomb artifacts, which they seemed to
enjoy a civilized and sophisticated daily life.  The tombs were located by metal probes and,
more recently, by altitude infrared photography, which clearly delineates the round circles
of the subterranean tombs.

The city of Spina was considered for many centuries to be a legend, since no trace of it
could be found.  There were no remains on land or even under the coastal waters, as has
been the case with many port cities in the Mediterranean.

But high-altitude photography has revealed a series of patterns caused by different shadings
in marsh grass, indicating walls, streets, blocks of dwellings, large buidings, squares and docks
of which only shadowed outlines remain in what had become an estensive swamp into which the
whole metropolitan complex had subsided into the mud and was forgotten by history.
