Dr. Maria Reiche, a German archaeological student who came to Peru in 1932, became
so interested in the Nazca lines that, in 1946, she established her home close by, making
the lines the subject of her constant study until her death in 1983.  She considered them
"the most important archaeological monument of Peru, and perhaps the world."

She noted their "great size, coupled with perfect proportion" and especially wondered how
the ancient artisans were able to draw on the desert terrain the gigantic animal figures
"with their beautifully laid out curves and well-balanced dimensions" - an incredibly difficult
task to accomplish "unless the ancient Peruvians were able to fly."

The idea of ancient Peruvian aircraft has been advantageously used by the Peruvian National
Air Carrier, AERO PERU, which has used in its advertising the motto:
