FROM SPACE                                                                                                     continued

An outstanding example of complicated constructions left by ancient builders, whose reasons
for making them has not been established, exists in the Nazca Valley in Peru.

Pilots, engaged in determining water resources in Peru, photographed mysterious lines drawn into
mountainous hills and continuing on the other side, and sometimes on the tops of mountains,
whose crests have been levelled off by artificial means, all in the Nazca Valley and surrounding

Mixed in with a series of straight lines, parallelograms, rectangles, triangles and enormous
designs of animal figures hundreds of feet long, parts of these markings bear a startling re-
semblance to landing fields .  The patterns of the geometric lines, animal figures, and "landing
fields" are apparent only from the air.

Their purpose is not known.  Perhaps they were meant to plot the course of as yet unidenti-
fied stars or, as has been suggested, were meant as signals to be seen by former visitors from
the skies.  In any case, they were unrecognized during the centuries that passed, until new
visitors from the sky - pilots flying on a hydrographic research project - observed the in the
early thirties.

Dr. Paul Kosak, an American archaeologist, who first realized their true extent and import, in
1930, later concluded that they may constitute "the largest astronomy book in the world."
