New Guanche theory demolished

A new theory, propounded at no little length in several editions   of one local daily recently, claiming that the aboriginal Canary peoples arrived in these islands on foot, brought this reply, published in the same paper, from a leading local geographer who preferred to remain anonymous:

“A notable effort, this theory that the Guanches arrived on the islands by foot from the neighbouring continent of Africa during a period of glaciation and taking advantage of a corresponding drop in the level of the ocean.
“It would be ingenious if it wasn’t as barmy as saying they came from Atlantis because the plain fact is the Canary Islands are separate from the African continental platform. They are islands formed by successive volcanic eruptions, or to put it another way, mountains whose bases repose on the ocean bed.
“Some, like Tenerife where the Guanches lived, measure some seven kilometers in height meaning it would be with some difficulty, glaciation or no glaciation, that anyone could conceive of the existence of a “dry path”, saving the total drying up of the Atlantic. And even if the theory could be proved (which geologically it can’t), the temperatures would have been such that no Guanche in his right mind would have attempted to make it across.
“Neither could there have been, obviously, any “terrestrial paths” to allow passage to the other islands...
“To sum up, both from a geographical and geomorphological point of view the theory holds no water and to claim the original settlers of Tenerife could have walked here from Africa has about as much foundation as claiming they came by bus …”
Now there’s an idea.
