Imagining Atlantis/Richard Ellis

This is one of those anti-Atlantis books that pans the whole evidence behind Atlantis and takes a narrow look at the evidence. That would be bad enough save that the book is also very deriative of the most famous anti-Atlantis book, Lost Continents, by L. Sprague de Camp. The main difference between that book and this one is that the author adds a section on Atlantis in film and TV whereas de Camp only looks at Atlantis in literature, at least in the version I have. Between the two, Lost Continents, though not perfect, is much better.

After ripping apart the research of various notable Atlantis researchers, like Lewis Spence and Charles Berlitz (a typical method even for pro-Atlantis books), the author devotes much of the rest of the book to Santorini, the poor man's Atlantis. Written very dryly and often very repetitive, I have probably made the book sound better than it is. Ellis, an oceanographer by trade, can often be seen commenting in documentaries where he not only talks down Atlantis, but ancient mariners, great white sharks, or anything else that might add some fun to the ocean.

Much like certain people here also like to diminish the fun of anything that has to do with ancient Egypt!
