Norman, I am not the first to tell you this, but I really find a lot of yours and Calvin's ideas about women and sex not only old-fashioned (by about two hundred years), but highly offensive.

Well, Jennifer & Seeker, it's unfortunate you feel that way.

Let’s be honest here, however, how much schooling do women really need anyway? Oh, I'll admit that there are a few really bright ones of you out there. But don't most women go to college to try and get a husband? And, once you get pregnant, don't a lot of you spend the next twenty or so years trying to raise your kids?

How much of that education do you actually end up using? My point is, wouldn't the money be better spent someplace else? Maybe allow women to have some schooling, just not as much as the men curently get.

Hardy, har, har! Normie, that one was so funny I won't even bother getting offended by it!

How about a hand for the Vice President everybody? Once again, he cracks a good one!

And just where would the money be better spent, oh, Wise One, a KKK rally or abortion clinic bombing?

That was highly offensive. I wonder if you actually have these thoughts or if you just throw these things out there to get a rise out of people…

I am deadly serious. The current administration has to make cuts where it can. It wouldn't be a popular move, certainly, but this president is known for making the hard choices. In my view, anything that encourages a return to traditional American values should be applauded. Young people should concentrate on their studies in college, not experiment with sex.

This is a retarded discussion. Women are not going to have their right to go to college limited, ever. Norman is just trying to get a rise out of you, as usual, and no matter how much "pull" he believes his people have with the "current administration" it's just not going to happen.

Be aware of how they work, people. Jennie, you were better off ignoring him, too bad you didn’t take your own advice!

Just out of curiosity, Norman, do you give men any of the responsibility for society's ills today or must people like you and Calvin lay it all on women?

Well, that depends on what part of society's ills you’re talking about, Aristotle. I'd say that a lot of the people who lack moral guidance in this world do so because of poor parenting, mostly because women, who should be staying home with their children, happen to be out there working. So, yes, a good deal of the blame does fall on women, many of which, these days, anyway, clearly don't want to be mothers.

If I may, I think we might have been better served ignoring Norman tonight rather than responding to him. Respond to him, and you let him set the agenda of the discussion. Ignore him, and you can keep up your own train of thought.

The "meaning of existence" tends to be whatever happens to give our own lives meaning, in my view. Some of us are still searching for it, but, much like love, we know it when we find it. Let's each of us ponder what gives our own lives the most meaning and then we may have our answer.

Dawn:

I've been away from the board for awhile and will be dropping by inconsistently from now on, so I wanted to say this before I run out of time tonight.

If there is anything that I have said to you in the past which has added to the pain you felt or the lack of faith in humanity that you express, I am truly sorry and hope you can forgive me.

As someone else said here earlier you seem to be too good for this world but don't take that to mean that you don't belong here. We all have our roles to play and I believe that yours is one of the most important. This world needs people like you and I wish there were more like you running around.

I have also felt beaten down at times and fantasized about giving in to the demon within. I imagine many of us have at one point or another. What keeps me from giving up is the knowledge that if I do something that's contrary to my nature, I may not be able to live with the guilt or sorrow afterwards.

So arm yourself with the knowledge that not all humans are getting worse and that there are people who can still love without feeling it a sign of weakness, for you have the best example of all... the face in your mirror.

I am one of those who believes that life does have meaning and we all eventually find it, no matter how long it takes. As for you, if you can touch people this deeply across an impersonal medium such as the internet, I wonder what you can do in person. Perhaps this is the meaning, the "calling" of your life. I urge you to explore it.

And as our friend Rockessence keeps reminding us...

"Illigitimi non carborundum!"

If Dawn doesn't mind, I would like to move her thread in a slightly different direction.

I believe the meaning of existence is to gather knowledge and so, also self-improvement. There actually is a lot to be gained by study and making one's self open to new philosophies and ideals. Knowledge is the key and does bring to the world a deeper meaning.

My favorite forum here still happens to be the Atlantis forum. Even though we have studied the subject from every possible angle, have never reached any answers, it is a riddle that is still worth solving. It is in the human past that we may still find our own answers.

You know, oddly, I never see Calvin or Norman ever hanging around there. Dull minds seem to breed hostility. I'll say that, even though I also remember Maria, who was here before most of you. She had a very brilliant mind, and yet was very hostile.

Such a beautiful sentiment, Anteros, thank you. I have always thought a lot of you and your words touch me more than you can know. I also apologize if I have ever said anything in the past that may have hurt you. You are a truly beautiful human being, and I admire all your qualities of charity and goodness and forgiveness at least as much as you might admire anything in me. You are what being a good man is all about. You aren't recognized half as much as you deserve to be, but you have been noticed, at least by me.

I don't want to hurt anyone, and if I have ever hurt anyone here, either by carelessness or some other offense, I deeply apologize for it. Only by coming to one another with an open heart can we ever hope to understand one another and reach past our differences and find some common ground. As I said, we are each of us each other. We must concentrate on what we share, our basic humanity, as opposed to any of our superficial differences.
