For centuries, an infamous prophecy of St Malachias, a 12th-century Irish bishop, has intrigued. According to his prophecy, there would be room for a total of 112 popes. The last in the series - Petrus Romanus - would lead the Church during its final trials. ‘Then the city with the seven hills will be destroyed and the formidable Judge will judge the people,’ he said.

The pope now elected - from America - is (counting from 1140 AD) the 112th in the series.

Also noteworthy is the connection with the Basilica of St Paul outside the walls in Rome. There hang portraits of all popes since Celestinus II - coincidentally also the first in Malachias' list. There seems to be only one empty space left. Is that a coincidence?

But the most remarkable thing about Malachias' prediction is that the coming into office of the 112th pope coincides with the near expiry of the ‘two days’ (read: two millennia) from the prophecy of Hosea 6.
