From the time this little guy came into my life back in the autumn of 2016, we were inseparable. He had the most magnificent coat I had ever seen, had no health issues and at once knew he had a high place in the pack. He was a proud little peke who didn't ask for affection but demanded it. At once, he was the big brother to my puppy Benji and, like all brothers do, they fought. Oreo and Benji were the first male dogs I had gotten in the house for along time, I didn't want anyone to challenge my beloved Prince. Oreo always respected Prince and, in many ways, was his most worthy successor. Every night for the last six years, Oreo would sleep beside me, often couldn't sleep without my arm around him.He was cute, big and healthy as could be. And he remained healthy until the last week.

A week ago, he was diagnosed with congestive heart failure, responded briefly to treatment, and then took a turn for the worst, dying in the parking lot after a follow-up visit to the vet a week later. He died in my arms, died, not an hour ago. When it is time, there is no stopping it and death, comes to them all. The lifespan of dogs is far too short for me, and it is hard for any pet owner to see their children suffer.

Like all the others before him, I console myself in the knowledge that at least I had my time with Oreo at all, my brief and fleeting treasured little being. I'll meet you in the hereafter if there is one, and among the first I'll look for shall be you.

What a handsome little guy, you were lucky to have him in your life in the first place.
