Alexandra Shipp Isnít Happy With Stormís Role in Dark Phoenix

Alexandra Shipp Isnít Happy With Stormís Role in Dark Phoenix
Sophie Turner and Simon Kinberg have been nothing but optimistic about how Dark Phoenix handles its iconic source material. However, one cast member who doesnít sound too happy about  her role in the film is Alexandra Shipp. She took over for Halle Berry as Storm in 2016ís X-Men: Apocalypse and will reprise her role in 20th Century Foxís last go-round with Marvelís merry band of mutants this June. While ďpromotingĒ the film at this weekendís WonderCon (via IndieWire), Shipp was asked if sheís excited to see the X-Men join the ranks of the MCU now that Fox is a Disney subsidiary. Surprisingly, she used the opportunity to voice her frustrations about Stormís lack of screen time in Dark Phoenix.

ďI would and I wouldnít [be excited] because Storm barely has anything to say as it is,Ē said Shipp. ďI donít know about [the other actors] but like we never talk. So it would be really nice if we werenít piled into yet another jam-packed cast, in which you only see me in the back of the shot like f***ing sasquatch.Ē

IndieWire doesnít specify if Shipp made these statements during Dark Phoenixís panel or in a separate interview at the convention. If itís the former, we canít even begin to imagine the tension onstage as the actress spoke ill of the film in front of her castmates. Regardless, we canít exactly blame her for being disappointed about not having enough lines in the movie.

Shipp was also asked about the possibility of an onscreen romance between Storm and Black Panther. Those characters famously tied the knot in the comics during Marvelís Civil War event in 2006. Unfortunately, their marriage was not meant to last, and they divorced in 2012. Although the Disney-Fox merger would allow this storyline to be adapted, Shipp isnít so interested in that prospect.

ďNo!Ē Shipp exclaimed. ďNo, I donít think Storm needs TíChalla, and I think she needs her own movie. It doesnít have to be me, it just needs to be made. A woman does not need a man in order to give her validity and she has also been around longer than him.Ē

What do you make of Shippís comments about her role in Dark Phoenix? Would you like to see Black Panther and Storm become an item in a future Marvel Studios film? Tell us what you think in the comment section below
