Strange foam fills streets after Japan quake

Residents of Fukuoka were perplexed when a thick layer of foam started to engulf the city's streets.
The peculiar substance, which first turned up on the city's roads and pavements in the early hours of Saturday morning, appeared following a magnitude 7.0 earthquake which shook the entire Kumamoto region just two days after an earlier magnitude 6.5 quake had struck the same area.

Believed to be directly related to the quakes, the foam has since become something of a social media phenomenon with residents uploading photographs and videos of it online.

Between the two earthquakes more than 1,500 people have been injured and at least 41 killed. Authorities are now battling against the clock to rescue as many survivors as possible.

"Nothing is more important than human life and it's a race against time," said prime minister Shinzo Abe. "Daytime today is the big test. I want rescue activities to continue with the utmost effort."
