Mammoth remains found in a Michigan field

The impressive woolly mammoth bones were discovered quite unexpectedly by two local farmers.
Trent Satterthwaite and James Bristle made the discovery on Bristle’s farm on Scio Church Road in Lima Township while they were digging a hole to drain water from a part of the field.

Believing they'd found something prehistoric, the pair called up the University of Michigan where scientists were able to confirm that their find was in fact a mammoth dating back 15,000 years.

Around 20% of the skeleton has been unearthed including the skull, tusks and several vertebrae.

Evidence at the site suggests that the huge animal may have been killed and stored there by humans, most likely as a backup food source that they had intended to return for later.
