Wonderful descriptive qualities and an immersing narrative.  If I may, the connection between the first part of the story and the second part is this:  sadness. 

Anna's earlier sadness involves us all.  Perhaps, in the end, the reader can also feel a sense of sadness for her as well, to pull the whole thing together. Not moroseness, mind you, we want no depression here, but simply something to bring us more in touch with her basic humanity once again.
