Marvel's Guardians of the Galaxy are getting a little face-lift.

Three-time "Black List" scribe Chris McCoy - a writer with no produced credits who's nevertheless been on Hollywood's radar for several years now - has been hired to rewrite the screenplay for the superhero film, which was recently announced as the company's upcoming "mystery title" at Comic-Con 2012.  McCoy will rewrite the previous draft penned by similarly up-and-coming screenwriter Nicole Perlman.

The story was broken by The Hollywood Reporter.

The forthcoming adaptation of the Marvel comic-book series is expected to feature the characters Star-Lord, Rocket Raccoon, Groot, Gamora, Drax the Destroyer and, likely, uber-powerful supervillain Thanos (as teased in the closing credits of this summer's "The Avengers").

"Guardians of the Galaxy" has been slated for release on August 1, 2014.

Star-Lord

First Appearance: Marvel Preview #4 (1976)
Abilities: Half alien and half human, Peter Quill can fly, survive the pressures of space without a traditional space suit and has a limited healing factor (it is unclear how he gained these powers or if they are just from his current suit).  At one time he had an implant in his left eye that let him see different energy spectrums and a memory chip that provides him with 100% recall (it's assumed these won't be in the film).  He uses a number of weapons including a "meta-pistol" which fires one of the four elements (earth, air, fire and water). He also uses more conventional alien weaponry when necessary.
Chances he's in the movie: 99%
Lowdown: Potentially the only Earth-born member of the team, Star-Lord is also lock because of his unique powers, skill set and because his most recent costume and mask is begging to be recreated on the big screen.  He's also the usual leader of the team and, well, a bad ass.

Drax the Destroyer

First Appearance: Iron Man #55 (February 1973)
Abilities: In his current comic book incarnation, super strength, limited invulnerability and a love of long knives.  He's an expert hand-to-hand combatant.
Chances he's in the movie: 99%
Lowdown: Drax has an incredibly convoluted history that's going to be hard to explain on screen. Chances are, he'll be re-created for the movie with a much simpler origin so all bets on his background are off.  However, he has always been cosmically tied to Thanos and his life mission is to kill the evil deity. That likely won't change. He's also the father of Moondragon (sort of).

Rocket Raccoon

First Appearance: Marvel Preview #7 (1976)
Abilities: The strength, agility and sense of smell of an everyday Earth raccoon.  Oh, and he's an expert marksman, starship pilot and hand to hand combatant (for a raccoon).
Chances he's in the movie: 99%.
Lowdown: A lock to be in the movie, Rocket Raccoon is a tough talker from the planet Halfworld.  He's loyal to his friends to the end and may a few intense psychological issues. His banter with buddy Groot make him pretty much a lock for the movie.

Major Victory

First Appearance: Marvel Super-Heroes (1st series) #18 (January 1969)
Abilities: Vance has the power of psychokinesis and uses it in the form of concussive blasts. He also has a future version of Captain America's shield, but that's a complicated story we don't have the word count for.
Chances he's in the movie: 10%
Lowdown: A NASA astronaut who was suspended in hibernation for 1,000 a years, he becomes a hero in the 31st Century and helps form the original team.  At some point, he becomes displaced in time and returns to the 21st Century where Star-Lord discovers him.  Recruited for the "current" Guardians team, his difficult backstory makes him an easy member for Marvel to cut from the movie roster.

Quasar

First Appearance: Marvel Preview #7 (1976)
Abilities: None except for his quantum bands which give him immense control over quantum energy. He uses the bands to create quantum constructs similar to what Green Lantern might do with his ring (hmmmm, wonder where Marvel got that idea?).  More recently though, Quasar has become a living Quantum energy form.  He can also fly in space and shoot energy blasts.
Chances he's in the movie: 50%.
Lowdown: After graduation from S.H.I.E.L.D. Academy, Wendall Vaughn was rejected from field duty for not having a "killer instinct." While a security guard at a research facility where the quantum bands are being tested, he comes under attack from AIM scientists (don't ask). Putting on the bands to protect himself he discovers their true powers and saves the day.  It turns out the bands worked just for him because of his relaxed personality. After a few adventures as Marvel Boy, he becomes the hero Quasar and discovers that the bands were intended to be worn by the "Protector of the Universe." He then takes on that responsibility and eventually joins a super-powered version of the Guardians which include Nova and the Silver Surfer, among others. If Marvel decides to include him in the movie, Quasar would be another Earth-born hero for the team and his Captain America-like personality would make him the most relatable member of the group.  Considering the intense CG effects needed to create his powers, he could also be saved for a sequel.

Gamora

First Appearance: Strange Tales #180 (June, 1975)
Abilities: Stronger than a normal human being, Gamora is extremely agile and an expert fighter.  She has a wide knowledge of almost every weapon in the galaxy and at times has had enhanced healing abilities. She's sort of a more powerful Black Widow, but with green skin.
Chances she's in the movie: 99%
Lowdown: The last survivor of an alien race, Gamora was adopted and raised by Thanos to become a supreme assassin. She later spurned her father and fought against him which makes her a perfect member for the "Guardians."  She's also been romantically involved with both Adam Warlock and Nova in the comic books which could lead to some interesting drama if its included in the new film.

Cosmo the Space Dog

First Appearance: Nova #8 (2008)
Abilities: Cosmo is incredibly skilled at all security protocols and has telepathic (how he communicates with other beings) and telekinetic powers.
Chances he's in the movie: 50% (but should be 99%)
Lowdown: Little is known precisely about Cosmo's background except that he was an animal used for space travel experiments by the Soviet government in the 1960's. Something happened during his flight and he eventually found himself at the interstellar space station Knowhere.  At some point he was mutated to increase his intelligence and lifespan. When the Guardians of the Galaxy decided to use Knowhere as a base of operations, Cosmo became an ally and worked with them during a number of missions.  He'd be a fan favorite, but Marvel may decide with Rocket Raccoon and Groot they can do without a telepathic dog in their "Guardians" movie.  Cosmo may also just be too similar to those talking dogs from Pixar's "Up" for comfort (although he's a lot smarter).

Adam Warlock

First Appearance: (as Him) Fantastic Four #66-67 (Sept.-Oct. 1967)
(as Adam Warlock) Marvel Premiere #1 (April 1972)
Abilities: At this current juncture in the Marvel comic book universe, Adam Warlock manipulates "quantum magic" and cosmic energy. He can create force fields, survive in space with no protection and fly at the speed of light. Basically, he's more powerful than Thor or any Asgardian you've seen on the big screen so far.
Chances they are in the movie: 99%
Lowdown: Another character with a long history with Thanos, Adam Warlock is best described as an artificially created being with cosmic powers. How he'll be used or portrayed in a "Guardians" film is anyone's guess.  And, yes, at one time he was Gamora's lover.

Nova

First Appearance: Nova #1 (September 1976)
Abilities: Taping into the collective "Nova Force" which allows him to fly in space, grants him superhuman speed, strength and the ability to project, absorb and deflect energy.
Chances he's in the movie: 50%
Lowdown: In an origin story strikingly similar to Green Lantern's, Richard Ryder is bestowed the power of the Nova Corps by the last living Nova Centurion. Unlike Hal Jordan, however, Ryder is a teenager when he receives his powers and spends years learning how to be a true hero. While not an official member of the Guardians in the comics, he worked closely with them in defeating two major crises in the universe. Currently, MIA, dead or waiting to be resurrected (take your pick), Ryder's Nova would be an excellent member of a big screen "Guardians."  Especially if Marvel was considering the hero for his own spin-off film.

Bug

First Appearance: Micronauts #1 (January 1979)
Abilities: Bug can cling to walls and surfaces. He has amazing agility and enhanced senses. He's also a master thief and accomplished warrior.
Chances he's in the movie: 25%
Lowdown: Originally part of Marvel's Micronauts series in the early 80's, Bug found his way back into the current Marvel Universe in the precursor mini-series to the most recent Guardians of the Galaxy comic. Star-Lord discovered Bug in Kree custody and recruited him to assist the Guardians in their campaigns. He became a member of the group during the middle of this incarnation, but it's unclear if Marvel would include him a movie.  The character "should" be owned by Marvel, but it's possible that whoever now owns the rights to the Micronauts toy line could claim some legal rights to the character.  That may just be a can of worms Marvel doesn't want to deal with if they don't have to.

Starhawk

First Appearance: The Defenders #27 (Sep 1975)
Abilities: Starhawk can fly in space, fire photon blasts and has superhuman strength that rivals Thor. He also has an incredibly long lifespan and is immune to most diseases and radiation.
Chances he's in the movie: 10%
Lowdown: A visual feast for any filmmaker, Starhawk's time-traveling background and alternate timeline origin make including him in any "Guardians" movie extremely difficult. The character would have to be recreated from scratch to work in a movie, but his powers and appearance make him prime cinematic material.

Groot

First Appearance: Tales to Astonish (vol. 1) #13 (Nov 1960)
Abilities:  Groot has the power to control other trees, increases his mass (i.e, "sprout") and appears invulnerable to fire. He has also regenerated his entire body from just a small twig. Groot is known for just saying "I am Groot!" and nothing else. It's been conjectured that there are multiple meanings of that phrase depending on how and when Groot says it.
Chances he's in the movie: 99%
Lowdown: Seemingly another member of the team who is the last member of their race, Groot's abilities should not be underestimated. He's helped save the universe on numerous occasions. Rocket Raccoon is Groot's current BFF and the duo should be the comic relief of the big screen "Guardians."

Moondragon

First Appearance: Iron Man (1st series) #54 (January 1973)
Abilities: In the Marvel Universe, Moondragon is arguably the most powerful human telepath alive (even more powerful than Professor X of the X-Men). She's also spent years training to becoming an otherworldly martial artist.
Chances she's in the movie: 25%
Lowdown: The daughter of Drax the Destroyer (in his previous human form), Heather Douglas was taken from Earth to the Moon of Titan as a child where she was trained by monks to harness her latent telepathic abilities and fighting skills. A one time member of The Avengers and Defenders, she became an ally of the new Guardians of the Galaxy while living at the Knowhere space station.  Her relationship with Drax would make her an intriguing element in any "Guardians" film.  However, she might be best saved for a potential sequel.
