I have seen Gibraltar myself, Desiree.  I sailed through the Strait myself in 1951.
Here's a picture of the ship (the SATURNIA) I was on, as it is passing in front of the Rock of Gibraltar.

I was 13 years old and I thought it was awesome.  I was aware of the legend of Hercules and the first
voyage of Columbus.  It was in the daytime and I looked at the vastness of the Atlantic Ocean and felt
really sorry for him and his crew braving it and sailing into that 'unknown'....even if he did not go by this
spot, the Atlantic looked so forbidding!
