Etan Patz Case Reopened: First Missing Child On Milk Carton Case Reopened

Huffington Post/AP First Posted: 05-26-10 01:36 PM   |   Updated: 05-26-10 06:50 PM

NEW YORK (Associated Press) - The Manhattan district attorney's office is reopening the decades-old case of a missing 6-year-old boy whose photo was the first to be put on a milk carton.

Etan Patz (AY'-tahn payts) vanished May 25, 1979. He was last seen walking two blocks from his lower Manhattan home to a bus stop for the ride to school.

Etan was the subject of one of the most extensive missing-child searches ever. He was never found but was officially declared dead in 2001.

An imprisoned child molester was declared the prime suspect. He refused to answer questions about the case. No one has ever been charged.

The office of District Attorney Cyrus R. Vance Jr. said Wednesday it is looking into the case, making good on a campaign promise.
