I recently re-read 'From Atlantis to the Sphinx' by Colin Wilson and he devotes almost two chapters to Paleolithic art and he referenced several authors and palaeontologists who specialize in the art of our distant ancestors.  Most of them have come to the conclusion that the figurines and cave paintings were a kind of "hunting magic" in order to lure their prey.
