The port system Pisano

The framework of topographical Pisan in ancient times had to be very different from now, with a coastline backward several kilometers and marked by Sinus Pisanus (Gulf Pisan), the centre of which resulted the three arms of the delta dell'Arno, while in the north came a series of channels relating to the basin of 'Auser (Serchio). La presenza di veri e propri approdi portuali è ipotizzabile per quest'area solo nei luoghi di S. The presence of genuine calls port is feasible for this area only in places of S. Stefano ai Lupi e forse di S. Stefano to Wolves and perhaps St. Piero a Grado, mentre negli altri numerosi siti si deve presupporre l'esistenza di approdi, da cui le merci erano indirizzate tramite i rami meridionali dell'Arno a sud e tramite i canali del bacino del Serchio a nord verso la città di Pisa.

Piero a Grado, while numerous other sites should presuppose the existence of calls, from which the goods were addressed through the branches southern dell'Arno south and through the channels in the basin of the Serchio to the north towards the city of Pisa. È verosimile pensare nel caso del Portus Pisanus citato dalle fonti ad una sistema simile ai porti lagunari, al cui interno scali come quello di S. It is likely to think in the case of Portus Pisanus quoted by sources to a similar system to ports lagoon, which includes stops like that of S. Rossore si caratterizzano come approdi fluviali. Rossore are characterized as a river port.

The context paleoambientale

The situation crystallised the excavation of Ancient Ships of Pisa offers a unique opportunity for the reconstruction of the context in which paleoambientale occurred alluvial events which led to the formation of deposit.

The particular conditions of the excavation and the presence of technicians from different fields on the site allow to proceed to collect all relevant data for the reconstruction of flat landscape of Pisa and its amendments: analysis of pollen and taxa arborei, recovery and analysis organic material and, more generally, the collation between geo-soil studies and archaeological data provide decisive evidence for an investigation complex and articulated the ancient landscape.

From a geological point of view, the site is a depression filled with water, relevant to a navigable river: flooding of the nearby Arno led to the formation of alluvial deposits, which have gradually advanced northward the south.

At a first line the shore of age archaic (VI-V cent. BC), who have to report wooden homes, in addition to reinforcing structures and containment, you switch to a second bank, dating to Hellenistic period (for it is the relevant ship "Hellenistic" and the walkway mobile).

Subsequent shore lines may be related to age and Julio-Claudian flavia, to the late second century. dC, al III-V sec. AD, the III-V cent. dC

and, finally, for the fifth time next century. dC:

for they are many floods, which led all'affondamento of numerous wrecks and their cargoes.

The excavation of Ancient Ships of Pisa made it possible to recover many of the goods of the cargo in the ships  involved that sank following the floods.

Several of the vessels contained wine amphorae of various origin (Gaul, Iberian, Adriatic etc.): their recovery has,
therefore permitted the verifiction of as in some cases they were reused to contain other goods.

This is the case of wine amphorae found on a ship B and re-used to contain preserved fruit.

They were also loaded with refined foods, as seems the case documenting the right front shoulder blades of pork found on an "Hellenic" ship, perhaps to be connected to a load of hams of first choice.

Neither there lacked other goods, as evidenced again by ship's cargo B, which was carrying sand amphorae augitica provenanced from the Campania Region.
