Next, our ancestors selected large, flat surfaces for pounding. Marks on tools and hammerstones indicate that hits were made using highly controlled, percussion-driven motions. In fact, core stones show no damage from failed hits, meaning that workers rarely made mistakes.

Flakes of comparable sizes were almost identical, as though they were hammered out on an assembly line.

Food preparation probably constituted one use for the tools. Remains of ancient cattle, pigs, horses, rhinos and even crocodiles were found at the site.

"The hominids likely lived in small groups exploring their environment for food procurement, either hunting or scavenging small game, or collecting fruits and plants," Delagnes told Discovery News. "A big part of their diet was vegetal. The density of people was very low and there were probably few contacts between groups."
