In 1665, a German Jesuit priest named Athanasius Kircher drew a fairly detailed map of Atlantis as he thought it once existed. This map has an inscription on the upper left portion that reads “Site of the island of Atlantis , in the past swallowed by the sea in the belief of the Egyptians and Plato's description”. If one look at the map, it is upside down since Africa and Spain are on the left side while the American continent is on the right. The arrow pointing downwards on the lower portion of the supposed location of Atlantis in Mid-Atlantic indicates that this map is inverted. Topographically speaking an arrow indicates north, therefore, if this map is inverted it will more accurately show the shape of the Mid-Atlantic plateau, north and south of Azores Islands, an unusual coincidence considering the lack of knowledge of oceanographic depths at that time.

Did Kircher found a reference where he derived his fairly detailed map of Atlantis?

The authors believed that Athanasius Kircher based his map from a reference.

As mentioned earlier the stone map does possess a figure that we put forth as the one representing the lost island of Atlantis . In Figure 1, one can notice an encircled figure representing the lost island of Atlantis that when plotted into a world map falls along the geographical locations of Iceland, Ireland, the British Isles, Madeira, Canary Islands, Cape Verde and the Azores, all of which have stories recounting their ancestors descending from a mighty race that inhabited an island in the Atlantic. The two islands between America and the Atlantis figure in Kircher's map represents the islands of Azores .

The resemblance in the shape of the Atlantis figure found in the stone map as compared to the one drawn by Kircher was very striking and the only slight difference between them is that, in Kircher's cartographic sketch, the southernmost tip of Atlantis is shorter in length while it is slightly longer in the coded stone map. If one would stretch the upper side of Kircher's Atlantis figure, invert it and compare them with the Atlantis figure on the stone map, one can notice their striking similarities and even be tempted to think that the stone map is very precise, made by ancient people with scientific knowledge in oceanography, cartography, seismology and satellite altimetry. Kircher's map proved to be an important contribution to the data we gathered because based from this, we were able to establish evidence supporting our claim that the Atlantis figure on the coded stone map reveals the location of the legendary island and this can be verified thru cartographic sketches, bathymetric charts, relief maps and satellite altimetry readings.
