Anger in Italy over mosques in nativity scenes

Right-wing politicians in Italy have protested at the inclusion of Islamic symbols in nativity scenes in some of the country's churches.

Parish priests in some northern cities placed mosques and minarets in their cribs alongside the stables, oxen and donkeys.

One official from the anti-immigrant Northern League commented that the only thing missing was the suicide-bomber ready to blow up Christ's manger.

But the imam of Milan welcomed the move, and it has also been supported by the bishop of Venice.

Elaborate cribs with figurines enacting the nativity decorate most Catholic churches in Italy at this time of year. Italians love to adapt new forms to ancient traditions.
