The word OCCULT can conjure up negative images for many, from Witchcraft to
Voodoo.  However, occult has a far different meaning.  It refers to a tradition of
secret teachings, passed down through the ages by initiates who have been
trained in clairvoyant perception, which present a more accurate understanding
of the nature of reality than that offered by either traditional religion or recent
scientific theories.  The most popular occult system in the late 1800s was
Theosophy, founded by Helena P. Blatvatsky.  These occult teachings are in part
derived from Eastern religions, including Buddhism and Hinduism, and have an
elaborate world plan of multiple planes of existence and successions of "Root
Races" of humankind.  In the occult tradition, mystical experience plays a key
role, and clairvoyant revelations continually enlarge and enhance the material.

The Occultists did not reject the scholarly works on Atlantis, but instead used
them as a jumping-off point.  Their goal was far more lofty than simply explaining
why languages or buildings are similar on both sides of the Atlantic.  They want-
ed to understand the descent of humankind from its spiritual origins into physical

The basis of the Occultist approach is that there are sources of information not
limited by time and space.  Rudolf Steiner, an outstanding Occultist as well as one
of the foremost scholars in Europe, pointed out that history can tell us very little
concerning humanity in prehistoric times.  Even geology and archaeology are
limited by the physical evidence that remains.  Those who have the capacity for
clairvoyant perception of the spiritual world can report on events to which histo-
rians have no access.  The skeptics would say that all this material was the pro-
duct of overactive imaginations, yet these ideas have captured the interest of
many scholars and are not simply a popular fad.  Steiner admits that spiritual see-
ing is not infallible; its vision may be inexact, distorted, or even the reverse of the
actual case.  But Steiner felt that people who have achieved a certain level of
spirituality will receive consistent information.

Helena P. Blavtski, the founder of Theosophy, wrote about Atlantis in her major work, "The Secret Doctrine".  Blatvatsky claimed to have learned the doctrine from
comparative study of the world's occult traditions during her extensive travels."The
Secret Doctrine consists of excerpts from the "Book of Dzyan", which she claimed
to be an ancient book of wisdom, together with comments on her translation.  Her
detractors, such as writer L.Sprague de Camp, are dubious about the authentici-
ty of the Book of Dzyan, and accuse her of plagiarizing it fom various Eastern
phylosophical works.  She may also have simply received the book clairvoyantly.
Whatever its origin, The Secret Doctrine had a major influence on the course of
thought about the spiritual evolution of humankind.

The goal of the Theosophical viewpoint is to explain  the origin and
evolution of the universe and the origin and evolution of humankind.  Atlantis
plays a significant role.  Theosophy views seven as a mystic number: there are seven planes of existence, sevenfold cycles through which everything evolves,
and seven Root Races of humankind.  It is these Root Races, and especially the
fourth or Atlantean, which concern us here.

The Theosophical saga describes the descent of the human spirit into matter,
followed by upward evolution.  Rooot Races do not correspond to our usual con-
cept of race, or even of humanity. The Root Races begin with the first, the Polarean.
The Polarean Root Race existed only in astral body form in the "Imperishable Sacred
Land," not in physical matter.  The second Root Race, the Hyporborean, dwelt in the Arctic continent of Hyperborea, a hypothetical continent in Greek mythology
located in the far north.  Hyperboreans had physical bodies, but with strong ties
to the ethereal.  They did not resemble what we think of as people, and were not
normally visible.

With the third Root Race, the Lemurians, the Theosophical story begins to tie in with the scholarly thought of the late 1800s.  Lemurs,  animals  related to the monkey, have an unusual distribution in the world.  German biologist Ernst Haeckel noted that lemurs abound on the island of Madagascar and are also found in Africa,
India, and on some islands of the Malay achipelago.  He speculated that a land
bridge might have existed at some time connecting these lands and allowing free
migration of the lemurs.  Haeckel went on to suggest that this now sunken land bridge may have been the original home of humankind.  Darwinian evolutionary
theory was becoming popular and geologists had noted striking resemblance
between rock formations in India and South Africa.  The name Lemuria was suggested in an orthodox scientific context by Bristish zoologist Philip Sclater for this hypothetical land bridge in the Indian Ocean between India and Madagascar.
The idea of Lemuria was one of the first pieces of evidence leading to the theory
of continental drift, which is now widely accepted.  At that time, however, it was one of the many theories attempting to explain the distribution of ancient geolo-
gical formations and fossil animals.

The Theosophists freely acknowledged that they had taken Sclater's term to
describe their own much broader concept.  The Theosophical Lemuria, a much
larger area than that proposed by Haeckel and Sclater, was a great southern continent occupying much of Africa, Asia, the Indian Ocean and portions of the
Pacific Ocean.  The story of the Lemurians described human descent into physical matter.  Lemurian "man" was regarded as an animal destined to reach humanity,
rather than as human.  According to Theosophist W.Scott-Elliott, the early Lemurians had gigantic gelatinous bodies, which began to solidify in the middle
of the Lemurian period.  These later Lemurians were between 12 and 15 feet tall, had no foreheads, had eyes set far apart so that they could see sideways as well
as in front, and had an eye in the back of the head.  Many were even less human
in appearance than this.

Madame Blavatsky, as she is typically called, was born in Russia in 1831.Herfamily was related to Russian royalty and at age 17 she married a government official
who was in his early 40's.  The marriage lasted only three months and she subse-
quently began a series of travels that led her to Tibet, Egypt, India, Mexico, Cana-
da and America.  During her childhood she was tormented with what is described
as "spirit possession," but she displayed several remarkable abilities and an ob-
sessive interest in ancient cultures.  At the age of 42, she came to New York City, where she quickly married a young Russian immigrant.  Although Madame Blavatsky never divorced her second husband, she became deeply enmeshed in a
relationship with Henry Olcott that began from the moment she met him in 1875.

In 1877 her first book, ISIS UNVEILED, was published and sold out within a week,
running through the modest initial printing of 2000 copies.  Shortly thereafter,
Blavatsky and Olcott traveled to India, where they hoped to contact certain
"Masters" who Blavatsky beleved had been sending her psychic messages.  After
six years in India, the couple relocated to England, where legal problems ensued.

Olcott soon returned to India, but Blavatsky moved around Europe, eventually
moving back to London.

Blavatsky's Atlantis speculations are primarily described in the Secret Doctrine,
first published in 1888.  Much of the material in the book is attributed to her trans-
lation of a Tibetan manuscript called The Stanzas of Dzyan.  In The Secret Doctrine Blavatsky reveals that seven "Root Races" are destined to evolve on earth during
the "fourth round" of seven cycles.  Each of the root races supposedly has a se-
parate continent, however this is a puzzling point since the word CONTINENT
to theosophists denotes not separate bodies of land, but rather means all the
dry landmass on the earth during the appearance of each root race.

Like Plato, Blavatsky wrote that civilizations are periodically destroyed by cata-
clysms that result in changes in the earth's surface, but she added that each new
root race springs forth from the destruction.  The various root races overlap each
other in terms of both timeframe and the land they occupied, to such a degree that
attempts to distinguish one race's development from another quickly becomes
fraught with confusion.

Post by: Bianca on February 22, 2007, 08:59:37 pm

The first continent and the first root race began near the North Pole.
Blavatsky wrote that  area was not actually destroyed, and four years
before The Secret Doctrine was published, suggested that the earth was
hollow and that an opening at the pole was somehow related to the emer-
gence of the first root race.  This race, according to Blavatsky, was the
first entry of spirit into physical matter.  The destruction of the first root race
occurred when Northern Asia was cut off from the North Pole and waters first
divided the region from Asia.  A shift in the earth's axis is given as the cause of
the change.

The second root race she called HYPERBOREAN and it also emerged near the
North Pole extending into Greenland, Scandinavia and parts of Asia.  It too was
destroyed by a shift in the earth's axis, but she related that nearly all people
of the second root race died during the destruction.

Post by: Bianca on February 22, 2007, 09:10:03 pm

The third root race was called LEMURIA and it began some 18 million years ago
in the Indian and Pacific Oceans.  Lemuria was said to incorporate most of Asia,
extending around South Africa into the North Atlantic and Europe.  According to
Blavatsky, the major remains of Lemuria today are Australia, the islands of the
Pacific and portions of California.  But because Lemuria also included the islands
in the Atlantic and the European coast, it is often referred to as LEMURO-
ATLANTIS, creating even more confusion.

The development of the fourth root race (Atlantis) greatly overlapped with the
Lemurians and Blavatsky related that a major destruction of Lemuria occurred
4.25 million years ago, "at the midpoint of the fourth root race and very end of
the third."  The last major islands of Lemuria supposedly sank over a 150,000
year period: from 850,000-700,000 years ago.

Post by: Bianca on February 22, 2007, 09:19:27 pm

The Atlantean root race (the fourth ) began in "the Atlantic portion of Lemuria",
around 8 million years ago.  The focal point of the emerging new race occurred
in the center of the Atlantic.  Eventually, that land became known as mainland
Atlantis.  Blavatsky related that Atlantis was once a large continent but it was
gradually broken into seven "peninsulas and islands".  As Atlantis began sink-
ing, many people migrated to the Americas, Africa, Asia, Europe and the British Isles.  Before the final destruction of Atlantis, which is related in Theosophical
literature to have been in 9564BC, there was one remaining island.  Called
Poseidonis, it was located in the Mid-Atlantic Ridge at the Azores and was about
the size of Ireland,  interestingly referred to by Blavatsky as "Plato's little
island.", it was destroyed by earthquakes and tidal waves.

Post by: Bianca on February 22, 2007, 09:28:31 pm

According to Blavatsky, the fifth root race (the current one) developed in the
Americas, starting some four to five million years ago, overlapping the Atlantean
period during the entire period.  There were early migrations of these people to
Central Asia.  A future cataclysm is predicted to occur that will destroy most of
Europe and affect the Americas, ushering in the sixth root race, which will also
center in America.  A seventh root race will eventually develop on the ancient
lands of Lemuria and Atlantis, which will rise from the seas when the sixth race is

It should be noted that Edgar Cayce also used the term "ROOT RACE" a few
times in his readings.  Hower, Cayce's depiction of root race is very different
from that in Theosophy.

With the appearance of the fourth Root Race, the Atlanteans, the Theosophical
story became more complex.  W. Scott-Elliott was the Theosophist who first publi-
shed "The Story of Atlantis" in 1896;  but it was his expanded book, "The Story of
Atlantis and the Lost Lemuria", published in 1925, which most people read.

The Scott-Elliott material was also received clairvoyantly and followed the standard
Theosophical line of seven Root Races.  He goes into elaborate detail regarding
the Root Races and subraces.  Scott-Elliott also provides detailed maps and
specific dates for the destructions of Atlantis.

Scott-Elliott's Atlantis story covers about 5 million years of history, with four
major destructions.  The first catastrophe was 800,000 years abo,.  The maps
show Atlantis as occupying most of the Atlantic Ocean.  Some 200,000 years ago, most of Atlantis disappeared, leaving two large islands in the Atlantic, which
Scott-Elliott named Ruta and Daitya.  Notably, the Bahamas were not part of the Theosophical Atlantis.  The third destruction occurred in 9564 BCE; Scott-Elliott
gives this exact date and provides other dates as well.  He says that the first
migration to Egypt took place 400,000 years ago and that there were Peruvian
Incas 14,000 years ago.

Scott-Elliott repeats many of the speculations of the late 1800s, which scientists
had proved wrong by 1925 - among them that the Basque language of Europe had a resemblance to North American Indian languages; that Mayan writing is similar
to Egyptian hieroglyphics and, following LePlongeon, that one-third of the Mayan
tongue is pure Greek.

In 1896 the London Lodge of the Theosophical Society published a book-length article by William Scott-Elliot in their journal TRANSACTIONS.

Initially titled "Atlantis: A Geographical, Historical, and Ethnological Sketch", it
was immediately reissued as a book and retitled "The Story of Atlantis".

Relatively few people are aware that the psychics Annie Besant and Charles Lead-
beater provided many of the details that Scott-Elliott included in the book.  In 1925
Scott-Elliott published an expanded version of the work as "The Story of Atlantis and the Lost Lemuria".  The Preface to the 1896 book attributed its contents to
both advances in scientific understanding and the utilization of clairvoyance tech-
niques to gain access to memories of the past - thus revealing what occurred in
Atlantis and the earlier Lemuria.  The book contains scattered references to scien-
tific findings of the time that support its assertions.

Scott-Elliott began by revealing that our current fifth root race is the Great Aryan
race and that we are of TEUTONIC STOCK.  Later he calls the Aryan race the "more
noble one".  With this assertion, we must take a brief but bizarre sidetrack.

Post by: Bianca on February 23, 2007, 01:27:34 pm

In recent years it has become well known that Adolph Hitler  and key leaders
of the S.S. took an interest in the idea of a Great Aryan race and actually came
to believe that Germany was destined to establish an idealized society based on
his rather twisted vision of Atlantis.  Hitler saw the "pure" Germanic peoples  as
the descendants of Atlantis.  He ordered German archaeologists to work in the
Yucatan at ruins as well as mounting a search for Atlantis in various locations.  It is
also known that Hitler dictated a follow-up book the MEIN KAMPH after he assum-
ed power in Germany.  The unpublished manuscript contains Hitler's plan to con-
quer the world, with the United States cited as the necessary final conquest.
Scholars believe that the book was stored in a safe and never published-because it not only contained Hitler's step-by-step plans for war, but also his reasoning for
the wars that were about to occur.  Hitler asserted the German people had both
the right and the destiny to rule the world because of their racial purity.  He used
the terms TEUTONIC and ARYAN in descriptions of the master race and linked the
lineage of the Germanic Teutonic race to Atlantis.  Scholars believe he was influen-
ced by Theosophical writings as well as a few other early writers.  While some
others had suggested that the superior Atlantean race was "White" well before
Scott-Elliott used the term ARYAN to describe the current root race, the idea that
Atlanteans were white became more firmly entrenched with Scott-Elliott's works.

Post by: Bianca on February 23, 2007, 01:46:47 pm

The first of the seven sub-races Scott-Elliott refers to as the RMOAHAL.  They had
"dark faces" and were 10-to-12-feet tall.  The second sub-race was the TLAVATIL,
a red-brown colored people who developed on a small island off Atlantis.  The
TOLTEC race came next, followed by the TURANIAN race.  The ORIGINAL SEMITE
race followed, developing in what is today the British Isles.  They are described
as a "turbulent, discontented" people always at war.  The AKKADIAN race then
developed just east of Atlantis.  These people were at constant war with the
Semites and were a major maritime people.  The final sub-race was the MONGOLIAN
who Scott-Elliott stated had no contact whatsoever with the mainland of Atlantis.

Scott-Elliott reveals that after a 100,000-year "Golden Age", the people of Atlantis
became selfish and malevolent and began engaging in sorcery.  A battle resulted
between the forces of the "White Emperor", who ruled from the "City of Golden
Gates' and the followers of the "black arts".  The White Emperor was driven from
the city and took refuge in friendly Tlavatil lands.  Eventually, everyone betrayed
the White Emperor and the practice of sorcery became rampant over all earth,
allowing a "Black Emperor" to take power.  These events took place 850,000 years
ago.  After 50,000 more years of evil, a "retribution" occurred in the form of a
terrifying cataclysm.  Massive tidal waves swept over all the land of Atlantis des-
troying the City of Golden gates, sweeping nearly all the land clean, and killing
everyone except a few survivors scattered in various places.  This destruction
took place 800,000 years ago.

Post by: Bianca on February 23, 2007, 02:18:46 pm

On a small Toltec island, called Ruta, survivors soon began a new dynasty, which
was, unfortunately, "addicted to the black craft".  At the same time, priests who
survived the disaster elected a new "white King" to serve the "good law."  Thus,
as revealed in his book, Scott-Elliott says that the never-ending battle between
good and evil was again initiated and the subsequent destruction (200,000,
80,000 and 11,564 years ago) took place as "Retribution".

Scott-Elliott's The Story of Atlantis also claims that 210,000 years ago, the "Occult
Lodge" of Atlantis formed the first "Divine Dynasty of Egypt", and began to teach
the aboriginal peoples who already lived there.  Just before 200,000 BCE, they
erected the first two great pyramids at Giza as halls of initiation and a treasure
house and shrine.  The destruction that happened just after the pyramids were
built submerged Egypt under water for a long time perio.  In addition, both of the
later destructions (80,000 and 11,564 years ago) resulted in Egypt being inundat-
ed by water.

In addition, according to Scott-Elliott, Sonehenge was erected 100,000 years ago
as a protest against the "over-decoration of the existing temples of Atlantis".

It is interesting to note that Scott-Elliott's descriptions of the City of Golden Gates
generally fit Plato's outline of the Center City.  It had a central hill with a great
palace surrounded by three concentric canals in the midst of a large rectangular
plain.  Flying ships made of wood and metal are also described with electric welding
used for their construction.  In the beginning the airships used mechanical power
generated by the people onboard, but later they utilized an electric power gener-ated by devices similar to "which Keely in America used..."  Using this electrical
power, the airships traveled 100 miles per hour.

Spence (1874-1955) was a respected Scottish mythologist who served as vice-
president of the Scottish Anthropological and Folklore Society.  He was fluent in
numerous languages and studied hundreds of ancient texts from nearly every-
where around the world.  His interest in the occult led him to publish the defini-
tive ENCYCOPEDIA OF THE OCCULT in 1920.  Spence took great interest in the legends of Central and South America and came to believe that traditions of the
occult around the world were so similar, that they had to have a single origin.

Spence eventually published over 40 books, most of them on Atlantis and the
Occult.  He concluded that Atlantis was the solution to this mystery and that
the Americas were the key to understanding what happened to the Atlantis
Empire.  He published a series of books on Atlantis, linking the lost land to the
advanced civilizations found in the Americas.

Strangely, Spence dropped all research on Atlantis after publishing THE OCCULT
SCIENCES IN ATLANTIS  in 1943 and he reportedly refused to discuss the topic

In the summer of 1883, a teenager named Frederich Spencer Oliver was helping
survey a mining claim near Mt. Shasta for his father.  His task was to poung
wooden stakes into the ground, number them, and then make a written note on
the number and location of each stake.  As he worked through the day, he real-
ized that his writing hand was trembling.  Inexplicably, he grabbed the pencil and
pad he was using, and to his astonishment, found that his hand began writing
seemingly as if by its own free will.  As the tale goes, over the next three years,
Oliver completed an amazing story that was published in 1894 under the title
A DWELLER ON TWO PLANETS.  The book is supposedly a historical account of
Atlantis told to Oliver through automatic writing by the Tibetan master Phylos.
Phylos story was based on recollections he (Phylos) had of past lives on Atlan-

The book reads, at times, like a daily journal relating tedious, mundane details.  At
other times, the book is mystifying.  It goes into depth about the Atlantean  gov-
ernment (even occasionally quoting labor laws) and describes various portions of
Atlantis.  One of Phylos' past lives was given as occurring in 11,160BC.

According to Phylos, the ancient Atlanteans established colonies in North and
South America, Eastern Europe and portions of Asia and Africa.  Phylos mention-
ed that souls have "sojourns", but in a curious section, he flatly refused to an-
swer the question of whether life existed on other planets, although he added
that we would eventually know the answer.

Phylos' Atlanteans used electricity and had both airships and submarines.  The
airships were called VAILX and were of varying sizes.  Curiously, the electricity
on Atlantis was said to be created by capturing the motions of the tides.

The location of Atlantis was from the West Indies to Gibraltar - a single landmass basically encompassing the current Atlantic Ocean.  Phylos claimed that Atlantis
went through three days and nights of natural disasters before a final blow ended the continent's existence.  After a brief tremble, the entire island continent sank
"like a stone" to a depth of about one mile.  He also reported that a 1300-foot-
high wall of water was created by the disaster.  This massive tsunami destroyed
almost everything as it circled the world.

service and the Royal Geographic Society.  He published two journals,
NEW WORLD ANTIQUITY and ATLANTIS for several decades and amassed a vast library of books, periodicals and short articles on
Atlantis, published in nearly every world language.  Sykes came to believe that the Americas were related to Atlantis and even focused
on the idea that Cuba was Atlantis, just before his death.

Sykes' collection of books and other materials were acquired by the

Before we leave the occultist, we must mention James Churchward and Mu.
Mu was the name of a land that LePlongeon derived from a bogus translation
of the Mayan TROANO CODEX.  It is now known that the Troano Codex is
primarily astrological and calendrical; but in the late 1800s, this translation
telling of the ancient land of Mu was as reasonable as many interpretations of
Mayan writing.  Churchward expanded greatly on the story of Mu in a series of
volumes published in the 1920s and 1930s.  Mu, not then confused with Lemuria,
once occupied most of the Pacific Ocean.

Although Churchward claimed to have translated documents, there is no evidence
that the documents existed and is best classed with the Occultists.

Great work, Bianca.  Sandra or I are going to move my Rudolph Steiner thread over here from AR. I'm also going to dig up this old Cayce thread I had going and get it over here, too.

I don't know that I wold put Churchward in that category, though, I think he believed he was writing history.

That's a great idea, Trent.  I enjoyed the discussions we had about Steiner, and I felt I was learning something.  At times I find Steiner a bit too esoteric for my tastes, but I know others have said the same thing about Cayce.

Journalist, teacher, lecturer and former professional classical singer, Murry Hope is one of England's foremost authors on metaphysics, ancient magical religions and parapsychology.  She was co-founder of THE ATLANTEANS in 1957 and served as
the Society's President, Principal Teacher and Healer for twenty years.  In 1977 her psychic abilities were tested by Dr. Carl Sargent of Cambridge University under the auspices of the BBC and she achieved an extraordinarily high percentage of accuracy.  In 1988 she established The Institute of Transpersonal Sensitivity, the aims of which are to effect a bridge between the transpersonal experiece and the more popularly accepted schools of psychology.

Her published works include:

Among the hodge-pdge of clairvoyant impressions that have filtered through down the ages, a few have fitted the known facts and added credence to the logical deductions of men such as Spence, Donnelly, Braghine, Muck, Tomas and Berlitz -
glimmers of truth that cannot be proven, but that seem to ring the right bells for many people.

One such work is ATLANTIS RISING by Daphne Vigers.  Published in 1944, when Miss Vigers was in her middle twenties, it comprises a series of "astral experiences"
and includes an understanding of the element of time, something that had received little, if any, consideration oin her day, aside from the work of Dunne and Bergson.

Aside from certain nationalistic emphases, which are logical in the light of the hostilities extant at the time (WWII), Viger's book contains a simplicity that is neither tainted by abstruse metaphysical dogmas, nor cluttered by the megrims of currently fashionable occult semantics. One could not do justice to it in a few para-graphs, but suffice it to say her descriptions complement much of what has been written about in
the earlier parts of this book.  Her Atlantis, as seen at the height of its glory, boasted a common-sense economy and an efficient system of public utilities, which made adequate provisions for the welfare of all of its people.  Her descriptions of the latter days could be seen as somewhat exagerated, however, and she, too, alludes to Druids as having arrived in Britain from the Old Country.  I think the mistake here lies in confusing Caesar's Druids and those described in the OERA
LINDA BOOK, with the secret cults of Quinn's 'sea people', who were, undoubtedly, the true Atlanteans.

One of the problems of pinning a national bias on the Atlantean theme is that everyone does it.  While British mystics fervently claim Atlantean roots in the belief that the good priests of Atlantis landed on these shores, wherein they buried the sacred power of the old priesthood, I have encountered the same belief elsewhere.  Many Americans, for example, are convinced that the encapsulated energies of the Light were left  in their safe keeping, and I have been entrusted with a similar 'occult secret' by mystics from France, Spain, Scandinavia and North Africa.  Perhaps generosity is kindest (and probably the more truthful) answer to all
this, as there were undoubtedly both 'goodies and baddies' among the many who did manage to escape, either prior to, or around the time of, the final cataclysm.
Therefore, the Cauldron of the Graal, the Sword of Arthur and other Atlantean me-
morabilia that form part of the mystique of British magic are no more exclusive ours than Sun or sea worship.

Those of us who feel Atlantean kinship or who have experienced recall of past lives
("fragments in other time zones", in my terminology) should refrain from indulging in the kind of xenophobic jingoism that is guaranteed to limit our spiritual progress.

The ultimate brotherhood of the Old Country cast its seed far further afield than we
might imagine.  Within which race the new priestly order will arise (assuming that it
does), is still anybody's guess, much as this may bruise the egos of certain occult
(I refuse to use the term 'spiritual') snobs among us!

ATLANTIS : Myth or Reality

The American writer Brad Steiger devotes the whole of his book, also called
"Atlantis Rising", to exploring the various facets of the Atlantean legend and the conflicting views concerning it that have arisen over the centuries.  Included in his
analysis is the "people from outer space" concept, which is used by some research-
ers to explain many of the myths that have been attributed to the arrival of Atan-

The Chaldean's Oannes, for example, is seen as an alien astronaut rather than an Atlantean priest, and the five epagomenal gods of Egypt as space visitors.  There is also a school of thought that associates the rise of the wise priest-initiates of
Atlantis with civilizing missions, and perhaps a tad of genetic engineering from some
other part of the galaxy.  Sirius is a popular target because of the Egyptian references on the one hand, and Robert K. Temple's fascinating book "The Sirius
Mystery" on the other.

Steiger also provides a wealth of psychic information received through well-known American mediums, notably Joseph W. Donnelly and his associates, which covers such subjects as the ancient Atlantean language, why Atlantis sank, the true sym-
bolism of the pyramids, which was
completely misunderstood by the ancient Egyptians, other sunken lands such as Mu, Lemuria and two at the North and South Poles, and how axis tilts are caused
by the accumulation of ice and certain spots.  The destruction of Thera, Pompeii and later cataclysms were brought about by natural causes, while the destruction of
Atlantis and Lemuria were purely mankind's doing, or so said Donnelly's psychic contacts.

Dr. Frank Alper is the founder of the Arizona Metaphysical Society.  Alper is one of a
crop of popular American channelers whose contact goes by the name of Adamis and who, according to the back cover of his book, has appointed himself "........the
spiritual name of "Christos", which means "The Enlightened One".

Alper has published three books on the Adamis teachings.

Alper refers to Mu and an ancient Atalantean land mass as having been destroyed
by cataclysms around 85,000BC, when both continents sank beneath the waves.

In the year 77,777BC, he claims, the first ships from alien worlds landed off the coast of what is now Florida, to begin to resettle and reconstruct Atlantis BENEATH
THE SEA.  There is much more along this line.

Alper does refer to crystals as being the source of power in Atlantis, which is quite
logical and could also find a place in the energy scheme of our own future.

In the final analysis, it all depends on whether one likes Atlantis presented in a hypothetical manner that lacks practical substantiation of any kind, or prefers the
rational theories of Donnelly, Muck, Scrutton, Spanuth and other, more orthodox scholars. As to who is correct in his/her Atlantean assumptions, however, only time
will tell.

Violet Mary Firth, alias Dion Fortune, was born on 6 December 1890 in Llandudno,
Wales, of Yorkshire parentage.  One of her biographers, Alan Richardson, has ren-
dered a sensitive account of her childhood and how she came to adopt the mysti-
cal name that was to feature so strongly in the Magical World for years to come.

To this day, many students of the Esoteric consider her to have been the greatest
occultist of our times.  But she is also acknowledged as possessing shamanic po-
wers, which removes her from the essentially directive role of Magician.  Her work
with the famous Fraternity of the Inner Light is also well documented by Richardson
in his book DANCERS TO THE GODS and, no doubt, many members of that organiza-
tionboth past and present will share some, if not all, of her beliefs concerning the
Old Country.

Richardson recounts how, at the tender age of 4 years, Dion experienced a con-
stantly recurring dream-like image of

.........a sandy foreshore with a level plain behind it and mountains rising abruptly in
the distance.  A sluggish river made its way across the plain; a few queer-looking trees like feather dusters straggled at intervals along its banks, but it was not safe to go near these trees because there were dangerous beasts in the river that might gobble you up.  For the same reason it was not safe to go too near to the waters of the shallow sea that rippled over the sands;  things like giant jellyfish were believed to swim there, and fat, shiny porpoise-like backs could sometimes be seen farther out.

There was glowing warmth, a lush grassy vegetation, the sky was a very dark indigo blue; and the sun, strangest of all, was copper-coloured.  The copper-coloured sun made a great impression.

Richardson comments that this could have been a vision of a life in Atlantis, as some psychic sources - Steiner, for example - suggest that the atmosphere of Atlantis contained far more water vapour than any climate known to us today.

There were cannibalistic fisherfolk in Fortune's vision, and sudden storms that rose
with little warning, while "home" to her was some distance inland in a cave at the
base of mountains, where she dwelt with her animal skin-clad companions.

DION FORTUNE AND GARETH KNIGHT                                                     continued

I have listened to a tape recording made by the well-known occultist, Qabalist and
Tarot specialist Gareth Knight, entitled VISIONS OF LOST ATLANTIS, in which he
claims that the information he was about to impart concerning the lost continent had been obtained by Dion Fortune and her immediate associates and had remained unpublished to this day.  He emphasized its fragmentary nature and the fact that much of it derived from memories of former lives, with an occasional insight
afforded by those 'inner planes' communicators who are aware that a higher arc of
the evolutionary spiral is approaching and will be instrumental in instructing human-
kind in harnessing the potentiial of the human will.

I must confess that the association of Dion Fortune with some of the following material does concern me, as one is given to understand that she was a reason-
able, logical-minded person, well capable of making both scientific and metaphysical
cross-checks.  However, the evidence must speak for itself; besides, how much of it was actually approved by Dion herself we are not told.

The term 'inner planes' can be confusing to the uninitiated (and to yours truly, to be
honest).  My kind of logic demands that I consider anything of an expansive nature
as moving OUTWARDS; the inward approach tending to impose psychological limi-tations that imprison one within one's own subjective experiences, which incline one to believe whatever one WANTS to believe.

I, and several other metaphysicians I know, prefer to think in terms of energy fre-
quencies of a finer, faster or more subtle nature, which constitute levels of percept-
ion that can be accessed only by those minds, intelligences or essences whose personal wavelengths are of a similar, complementary or compatible quality.  But leaving all this aside, let us see what information about Atlantis Dion and her associates gleaned from these so-termed "inner planes".

DION FORTUNE AND GARETH KNIGHT                                                         continued

It is agreed by most mystics and psychics that it was the cream of the Lemurians who were the founders of Atlantis, following the Lemurian cataclysm.  It is in this
area of the following data that anomalies occur.

According to Knight's information, the average Atlantean was 7 feet (2 meters) tall,
whereas the Lemurians had been much taller.  Atlantean bodies were also more porous than ours are today.  There were several racial types, including black ape-
like people who matured at the age of 9 and who are described as being more animal than human.  There were also yellow, Mongolian-type of extremely low in-
tellect.   Slaves were taken from both these groups, which constituted the lower of three social tiers or castes.  The former group lived in sheer filth and the latter did not fare much better, there being no sanitation.

The upper tier consisted of a king, the priestly castes, the scribes and artifices, and the warriors.  As Atlantis was a theocracy, the king was directly responsible to the
High Priest of the Sun.  The religion of the Sun represented the secular worship of the people, rather after the style of our modern churches, whereas the Sea Mysteries and the Stellar Mysteries were exclusively for the initiated and therefore
kept secred from the profane masses.  The priests were vegetarian; the warriors
ate meat; and, if I am to understand Knight correctly, the animal-type people lived on filth, excrement and the bodies of their own dead!.  The society was primitive in one sense, but highly evolved esoterically.

Defective children were put down at birth, although mothers would frequently cheat the law by borrowing another's child and concealing their own.  If a child from one of the lower tiers showed talent, he or she was brought to the temple to be
educated .  Genetic selection was practiced and people were bred to intensify cha-
racteristics of social value.  The technology of the artificers was kept strictly secret,
and it was customary for each man or woman to present the tools of his or her trade regularly at the high temple for blessing.  The system of exchange was one of barter, and there was a form of phonetic writing.

DION FORTUNE AND GARETH KNIGHT                                                         continued

The sacerdotal caste consisted of priests and priestesses; the latter manipulated a
magical "Hall of Mirrors".  There were two main temples, the High Temple of the Sun
in the City of the Golden Gates, which was built on a mountain to the west of the continent, and one referred to as "The Sun behind the Sun", which was nearer to
the sea.  (Could this perhaps be an arcane reference to the binary star system
Sirius?)  Although the priests of the former temple were reputed to have succumbed
to the dark forces towards the latter days, those of the "The Sun behind the Sun"
never wavered from the Path of Light.  The latter were also totally non-political, whereas the former were very much concerned with the machinations of the power
game.  It was at the second, or Mystery Temple, that the Seeresses were initiated.
These priestesses of the sea had the final say in all matters - even the High Priest of the Sun could not argue with their judgements.

Among the occult rites practised were strange magical matings that took place on those enigmatic "inner planes" and were involved with the ensoulment of "higher
forces"(?).  The Stellar Mysteries derived from the knowledge of a strange, radio-
active force, the nature of which was understood by only a few high initiates.  This was related to energies emitted from the stars and those stellar forces, in particu-
lar, that are destined to manifest in the approaching Aquarian Age.  Knight draws
a comparison between these energies and those of the Qabalistic Sephirot Chokmah and Binah, which are accessible only to initiates of high grade.  He also refes to a "Hall of Images", which was concerned with elements of water, the power of which was closely allied to the science of sonics.  Those members of the priesthood adept at controlling this particular branch of the elemental family were,
we are told, responsible for loosing the waters that produced the final inundation.  One mention that caused me to prick up my ears concerned an ancient legend of a White Emperor from the distant Atlantean past, whom, we assume was an incarna-
te being of Light, whose statutes constituted the earlier, more spiritual basis of the
Atlantean system that later collapsed under the power of the dark forces.

DION FORTUNE AND GARETH KNIGHT                                                     continued

In the latter days the priestood of the Sun became so corrupt that the powers they
possessed were grossly misused and all that was good was withdrawn by the priesthood of Light to rest for ages, until recalled on a higher arc at the appropriate
time.  One Atlantean colony, which was set up in Britain, gave birth to Stonehenge and other monoliths later associated with Druidism, which is indicated as being of
Atlantean origin!  Many of the good priests who managed to escape the cataclysm
are said to have landed on the now sunken lands of Lyonesse, off the coast of Brittany.

Knight also deals with the visions of Margaret Lumley-Brown, whom he describes a  psychic of some integrity.  It seems that Lumley-Brown's interpretation of the whole
scenario took on a Christian flavour rather than an Eastern one.  (Why does it have to be one or the other?)  From her work we learn that the Sea Mysteries of Atlantis
were considerably more powerful and older than those of the Sun, being concerned with the origins of primordial life itself as manifested through the element of
water, the Great Mother of birth and death and the feminine cosmos.

Well, well, comment is irresistible!  First of all, Dion Fortune's childhood memories: why should these be seen as relating to Atlantis?  While Mooney and others have
commented on the possibility of the atmosphere containing more water vapour were out planet positioned slightly nearer to the Sun, surely this could equally apply to any of several earlier periods in the Earth's history  What about Lemuria or Gondwanaland, for example,or even some parallel world or environment external to
our solar system?

Now to the fragments of information derived from various ESP sources: black, ape-like men who matured at the tender age of 9.  In Atlantis? Hardly, In Lemuria?  Well, I will keep an open mind on that one!  The same applies to the descriptions of corpse-and-sewage-eating slaves, which is hardly consistent with Plato's highly
evolved and beautiful people who were skilled traders, artisans, metal-workers and warriors, or those documented accounts of scholarly priests who taught a
doctrine of service, discipline and brotherly love wherever they landed (the Oannes
and Quetzalcoatl stories, for example).

A tall people?  Yes, I find that credible.  But a hostile environment filled with prehistoric monsters and cannibalistic fisher-folk hardly relates to Otto Muck's description of the kind of coastline Atlantis would have enjoyed when it was encircled by the Gulf Stream.

Strange and evil rites?  In the latter days, perhaps. But ten there are some pretty
gruesome things going on in today's world, a fair degree of which masquerades under the guise of modern civilized society.

Genetic engineering?  We have been using this on animals and crops for some years now, and research indicates that DNA can cross the genetic barriers between the animal and fungus kingdoms.  Professor George Sprague, a molecular biologist
at Oregon University, and Jack Heinneman, a student, have shown that bacteria that colonize the human gut can transfer their genes to yeast.  This discovery has
enormous potential implications for genetic engineering, and for the possible dangers of releasing 'test-tube' bacteria and plants into the environment.  Some genetic engineers believe that transfers to other species would be impossible, or at least extremely unlikely.  Sprague, on the other hand, sees this discovery as having a number of implications, the foremost of which is for evolution.  But it also
raises the possibility that barriers to the transfer of DNA between species are not as solid as we might have supposed.  In fact, such transfers may be a lot more  fre-
quent than we have thought.  Sprague cautions: " It highlights that we need to
remain cautiousabout how we deal with recombinat organisms [creatures altered   by genetic engineering] in the laboratory, and in commercial ventures, to make sure they don't escape into the environment."  All this, plus the Genome project, would seem to indicate that we may be in for a repeat performance of the Atlantean

As to the question of Atlanteans landing in England and founding the Druidic order
in these isles, there is ample historical, archaeological and ethnological evidence that points to the Druidic cult having other, more shamanic beginnings.  Besides,
the Celts, for whom Druidism comprised the essence of their sacerdotal establish-
ment, can be proven by blood groupings and other genetic factors to have originated elsewhere, although it must be conceded that Atlantean colonists are believed to have settled in the regions of Tyre and Sidon, which, according to the
OERA LINDA book, were strongholds of the Druids in days long past.  As far as the
Celtic/Druidic controversy is concerned, I feel more inclined to trust the scholarship of Bob Quinn and other Irish authorities, whose conclusions concerning the Atlantic
sea peoples seem far more feasible to me.

Sea worship - yes.  This was, as Knight suggests, closely related to the worship of the Great Mother and therefore akin to the matriarchal Age of Cancer, which seems a likely time for a major inundation.

I must confess I do have a problem when it comes to the statement that the ancient Atlanteans were "primitive in one sense, but highly evolved esoterically:....
I have come across the same kind of thinking in some contemporary esoteric groups
whose members appear to suffer from 'holier than thou' syndrome: they feel they are too highly evolved or spiritually exalted to acknowledge a letter, say 'thank you'
attend to the cleanliness of their bodies, or exhibit other courtesies common to civi-
lized people.  In my book of rules, spirituality goes hand in hand with understanding, caring and respecting the views of others.

With regard to the supposed Atlantean sanitary arrangements enumerated in the 'impressions' related by Mr. Knight, my nanny always used to say 'cleanliness is next to godliness', which may sound Victorian, but when applied to the occult principle that 'like attracts like' inclines one to think she had something!
