This discovery is yet another indication of the important land, sea and climate changes
that have occurred in comparatively recent millennia.  It is estimated that the last time
this area of the Sahara, including parts of Libya, Chad, the Sudan, Egypt and, most
probably, Tunisia and Algeria, enjoyed enough water and rainfall to support animal and
human populations was about 10,000 years ago.

This was coincidental with the period of very early Egyptian civilization which, according
to Egyptian legends, handed down by the Copts, was brought to Egypt by gods from the
Western lands.

Carved into the Tassili Mountains of Algeria, in what is now a completely arid landscape,
there are representations of men and animals living in a pleasant country of forests,
plains and rivers.

Many of these drawings are examples of an advanced and sophisticated art, often defaced
or drawn over by later, more primitive artists, as if those who had originally made the
pictures had departed.
