FROM SPACE                                                                                                        continued

The possibility of the existence of stone pyramids large enough to be seen from space and located in a thick jungle area of Eastern Peru recalls the insistent belief of Colonel P. H. Fawcett (which cost him his life) that great stone cities once existed in what is now the thickest jungle area of South America.
(LOST TRAILS, LOST CITIES).  In his opinion, these cities preceded the Incaic culture of the east coast, and their builders came originally from the East, refugees from lands that had sunk beneath
the sea.

Fawcett, a colonel in the British army, who devoted years to exploration and boundary survey in the largely unexplored center of the South American jungle, believed that these great cities were thousands of years old and that the "connection of Atlantis with parts of what is now Brazil......affords explanations for many problems that otherwise are unsolved mysteries."

The presence of non-Indians in Central and South America had been established in earlier times by members of Spanish and Portuguese expeditions, who described encountering white tribes (one living in a city called Atlan) and also tribes of warlike blacks.  In his own expeditions, Fawcett heard from a variety of tribes that white men, many generations previously, had built great cities that still existed in the deep rain forests and that their high stone houses and stone streets were stilll illuminated at night by a steadily shining glow, the source of which was not known.  Some Indians told him that there was great treasure in these far-off cities ( a useful subterfuge sometimes employed by the Indians to persuade white men to leave the area for some other place, as distant as possible from the Indians'
village).
