Sarah, my Sweet Princess, you flatter with me your kind words. I roar with delight HAAAAAARCK!....HAAAAAARCK!......HAAAAAAARCK! whenever I read your responses to my challenges. You are soooooooo HUMAN! And so predictable (in a nice human kind of way).

You Humans are so odd. You like to define yourselves by your misery. I see Humans with nice families, everything they could possible wish for from a material sense and yet they are unhappy and tear themselves apart over foolish nonsense. I see other humans with nothing, NOTHING who have suffered incredible personal tragedies who are happy and full of joy and by every right they should not be. But they have made a personal choice.

To me it makes no sense to bear the burden of the world’s problems on your shoulders. It is more important to OVERCOME these problems and put them behind you. All of us have a choice as to how we choose to react to any situation. And I mean every situation. You, my Dearest, are presently making a choice to be, if I may say so, Miserable. But you are going one step further. You are so strongly aligning your self concept and identity with misery that you are AFRAID that if you take a holiday from it, you will lose your sense of identity.

Sarah, you are afraid. You are afraid to discover who you really are. Abandon fear my Love. Abandon Misery and live life to its fullest.

Always Your Friend,

The Silver Dragon

“Hey Argentum, was that you in ‘The News of the World’, the HAAAACK!, HAAACK!!, the (get this guys) the ‘Flying Lizard’”.

Deafening Roars.

“Yeah, Argie! Flying Lizard! …..The Noble ‘Silver Dragon’ is nothing but a ‘Flying Lizard’. What do you think your girlfriends on your silly little Atlantis Rising blog would think of that.”

“Yeah Argie. And aren’t you the one who’s always saying, “Nooooooo, don’t eat cattle, they’re full of antibiotics and growth hormones….real dragons eat wild carrion like beached whales.”

“Lookit guys. The ‘News of the World’ is the shabbiest tabloid around. You cannot believe what they say.”

“So you are denying that you mutilated cattle outside Ciudad Juarez?”

“No, that was me. OK, a round of fermented Malic Juice on me.”

Deafening roars of approval!

Hello Dragon,

It appears you have been well.

All this time we have been talking, and yet it seems we really still don't understand one another at all. And yet, that is no reason why we shouldn't try. First off, to indetify with suffering does not, in itself make one miserable. It is a fallacy to think that it does, or even that it is has to. It is part of the beliefs of Jews that life in itself is filled with suffering, that God does not promise us an easy life, and that the challenge is to do as best as we can in this world despite all our various burdens.

It is not for me, a life of carefree parties and play, nor do I want such a thing. I do play, but doing so does not make one forget all that came and died before. I honor their memory as I live and breathe. We must never forget the past, if only to be ever mindful of the future. And yet, even if we need not be mindful of the future, we must not forget the past if only because those who came before us also tended to give is so much.

I do not want an easy life, but an honorable one.

Perhaps we can learn to understand one another, rather than seek to change one another.

And you, Molly, welcome to the forum.

Sarah

My Dearest Love Sarah,

That I do not understand you is why I have always adored you from the first time that we met. You have this air of mystery and exotica about you which stirs a great curiosity in me. This is what makes you such a compelling friend to have. My God, my Dearest, if all my friends agreed with me, what a boring social agenda I would have!

But it is the process of trying to change one another (which is seldom successful, I agree) by which we grow to understand one another and by which we grow to understand ourselves better as well. I think you would agree (I sincerely hope so) that you have learned more about yourself by having these discussions. A friendly but slightly confrontational approach helps to clarify and focus one’s position and perspective more firmly.

I am blessed that my life is very much one of carefree parties and play all day and every day. But this is because I work to ensure that I enjoy to the maximum everything that I do. Even the miserable or disagree tasks that one must do can be done in a way that derives maximum benefit and satisfaction for those involved under the circumstances diffult as they often are.

We have fundamentally different approaches to life, but I do understand you a little better. I must say, with the greatest respect and love for you and with forked tongue slightly in fang, that you would be happier were you more like me! HAAAAARAAACK! HAAAAAAACK! HAAAAAAAACK!

Having stirred your ire a little with the last sentence, I want to propose how our two opposite positions can be reconciled. And it comes down to how one defines happiness. Some dragons and humans look at me and make the assumption that I am not happy because I am not flapping my wings and jumping around like an idiot all the time or because I have a terrifying expression on my face (which unfortunately, is how I normally look) but what they do not realize is that one does not have to demonstrate outward signs of happiness to be happy. I find this to be shallow. I believe that happiness can be defined as how one reconciles one’s position with the world. If one has regrets or sorrows, I believe one should not dwell on them and actively work to change this situation. The act of trying to change, even unsuccessfully is very important because an unsuccessful attempt eliminates regret – because you know you tried and can take pride in the attempt. Ultimately, happiness is not even the goal or objective anyway, it is the by-product of one’s every day activities.

“I do not want an easy life, but an honorable one.”

What is interesting about this statement is that one can take the more difficult road, and be happier for it, reveling in the challenge, enjoying and anticipating the triumph ahead and laughing at the inevitable bumps in the road that derailed one afterwards.

The key message here is that one cannot equate happiness with ease. Happiness and comfort are not directly related. There are plenty of miserable millionaires and happy mud hut dwellers to prove it.

My Dearest Sarah, whatever happened to my Beautiful Brooke? I fear I have offended her gravely and deeply and she has summarily resolved never, ever to speak to that stupid dragon fool ever again.

Happily yours,

The Silver Dragon

“Back to eating dead seals again, eh Argie.”
“Yeah, I’ve had enough of the paparazzi. But seals and whales are great bioaccumulators of toxins. I wonder if we need to change our diet?”
“Get off this Argie, we’re immortal – well almost. Did you hear about Cyrillus? She got clipped on the head by that Airbus, and hit the sea pretty hard. She swam to a coral reef and damn near died before her sister Sybilla found her and vomited a couple tonnes of giant squid down her throat.”
“Well, squid is a better diet. They are plankton feeders and have less toxins. But I remember Sybilla. She almost killed me in a mating ritual about 10 million years ago.”
“Yeah. I remember that. You were a bloody mess. But she did kill Aristedes just 13,000 years after you.”
“Geez, I forgot about Aristedes. He was a **** dragon too. Look where that got him.”
“Argentum, as far as dragons go, just remember that women are always more dangerous than diet.”

Dragon,

Why assume that, because we carry the lessons of the past with us, that we lack the capacity to be happy? I have been fortunate to have made some very good friends, to have family that care about me. Finding these lessons from the past actually only brings more friends, not laments.

I both laugh and learn from people like Anne Frank, I share the hopes and despairs of the people who were in the MS Saint Louis, the "voyage of the damned." I share their hopes, I share theor dreams. We must always remember who came before. If we don't, we forget the pains they suffered for us, And yet, they are friends.

We do have two different philosophies. I think you believe that life to be a party. I believe it is for the betterment of the soul. Being friends, I do not hold that against you. It would be an awfully drab world were we all to be the same.

I don't think we should try and change one another, if we all are on a certain path for a specific reason.

AND ONCE YOU FEEL COMFORTABLE IN YOUR OWN SKIN, LIFE IS ABOUT MAKING THE WORLD A BETTER PLACE EVEN ON A FORUM.

My Dearest Sarah (m'luv) and Ishtar,

We dragons just love to party!! (We're kind of stupid that way) But they are intellectual parties. A mixture of frivolity, fierceness, fire and formal debate.

But I shall tell you this my beloveds, about us dragons: You humans either Love us or you want to be us. And I am assuming in both your cases that it is the former!

But I shall always challenge your position. Status quo is unacceptable. We must always change for the better. And as a 100 million year old Pteradon, I am much closer to perfection than you are, your tongue lolling physical beauty notwithstanding relative to my hideous appearance.

Hideously yours,

The Silver Dragon

"Argie, I've been reading your posts. You're too hard on Sweet Sarah."

"Yes. I worry about that. But she is pretty tough you know."

"Well, if you carry on this way you are going to **** her off just like you did Brooke."

"Marius, you underestimate Sarah. Have you not thought that it is I who is getting the worst of it."

"She is kicking your ass, Argentum."

Grunts of agreement all round.

Hello Dragon,

Of course, I am not mad at you and I don't believe that Brooke is either. Brooke is very involved with a friend of ours, and I am happy for them. And I don't view this as a competition. I realize that there are some things that others will quite never understand, because of their heritage, upbringing, whatever, and so, perhaps it is best not to even ask them, too.

I had someone ask me today, "don't you think that Israel is over-reacting to what is going on in the Middle East?" I responded: no, and I rolled my eyes. It's a fair question, when asked by some people. And yet, there is that other element that I think would not be satisfied unless they see Israel destroyed and her people driven into the sea. In that part of the world, one is surrounded by enemies, and yet, one also never knows who one's friends are either. That is what a Jew often has to deal with in their everyday life as well: often surrounded by enemies, often not knowing who one's friends are either.

And so, if I tend to get defensive at times, perhaps I have a bit of a reason to as well. My apologies if I come across that way sometimes.

When last we talked, we visited the idea of "happiness." While I am happy for you that you love to party, the deepest happiness comes from being with friends, family, reading a good book. Could we have any of that without being confident in our security?

Sarah, my dearest love,

You must know, my precious, that I take the events that impact the lives of others very seriously. As an example of this, may I present yourself. But I do not take myself very seriously at all. Perhaps these two paradigms become confused, even by me. Ok, we have both confessed our failings to one another. Sarah, isn't being friends wonderful!

I have not been able to follow the recent events of which you speak very closely owing to very urgent and important (but very, very good) dragon business. From what I can gather I can conclude that the right decisions are being made by the powers and financiers that matter on both sides.

Sarah, my sweet, I love your visits and I sense that you are feeling a greater sense of peace but that is just my dragon sense. I am very, very happy for Brooke. I.hope she will produce abundant and strong progeny. I have always been jealous of you human's with your live births. We dragons, being hatched from eggs have the sense of being rejected foetuses, expelled from our mother's bodies. Nor did we get the same level of parental attention hatching as imagos, self sufficient and not requiring the nourishment nor love nor bonding forged at the breast like you humans.

But enough of Brooke, breasts and bonds.

I shall post further comments later my beautiful one as I must yield to some vulgar matters of business now.

Your favourite reptile,

The Silver Dragon

Hello Dragon,

Yes, being friends is wonderful, and just having friends tends to be quite wonderful, too. I wonder, though, what makes a friend? Is it shared experiences, shared beliefs, or something else altogether, a chemistry we can't explain? What makes a friend most of all, I feel is how we tend to make each of us tend to feel about each another. For myself, I happen to like having my intellect challenged. And don't worry about friend Brooke, I doubt she'll be wanting to have children anytime soon. She has a fabulous intellect herself, and I'm sure she will be putting it to good use before settling down.

While G_D did say, "be fruitful and multiply," what is most important now, I feel, is to leave our offspring a better world before we bring them into it.

I hope all is well.

Sarah!!!

HAAAARAAAACK!

You have caught me at a very, very busy time my love!

I am torn by the fact that I wish to reply at length to you my dearest yet cannot spare the time. Meanwhile, I also wish to at least be prompt and apply myself later in a manner that does you justice.

And so it is that I must balance this bit of inconvenience and so doing describes an aspect of friendship. We make time for others, not when it is convenient for us but when others need us. We make sacrifices for friends because they do the same for us. Is it selfishness? I think it is. I think it a form of unconscious selfishness. Except that this love and time is given without any expectation of return but we take solace and comfort in the fact that kindnesses may be returned to us if we are in need. Do we unconsciously believe that if we deposit "friendship credits" into a bank of goodwill that God or Fate will be more willing to provide us a withdrawal in a time of need?

But there is a chemistry we can't explain. My eyes have met strangers and a voice tells me that one day we shall be friends. Often years pass by and the voice that spoke to me indeed spoke the truth. Self-fulfilling or an overlap and cross-bridging in the fabric of time as our vertebrate brains perceive it?

I really must run now Sweet Sarah. Apologies for the haste and my thoughts have been with you owing to recent events.

Hello Dragon,

But of course you miss the point of all this.

Someday we shall be friends..?

We are friends.

Proximity in itself does not make a friendship. And if proximity does not, how can it be singled out as the lone criteria? You know my thoughts, and you know my beliefs. Even when we disagree, we still manage to accept one another, flaws and all. That is what achieves understanding, forms a bond, creates memories.

Tired tonight, more later.

Sarah

My Dearest Love Sarah,

Of course we are friends my Sweet. I was referring to other dragons that I saw but was not introduced but upon seeing them was overcome with a powerful feeling that one day I would be good friends with that dragon.

As for you, it was Love at first sight!

Today I completed a Great Project. It is secret and cannot be divulged but it took 8.5 solar years to complete. I am now embarking on two new Great Projects, both of which must remain secret. One I started today and the second I hope to begin tomorrow. Each, I believe, will take 3 to 5 solar years to complete.

Everyone should have at least one Great Project. It can be anything but it must comply with three simple rules: 1) It must be enjoyable. 2) It must be of benefit to the planet in some way. 3) It must be secret to as many people as possible.

The Silver Dragon

My Dearest Aranya,

What a great pleasure indeed it is to make you acquaintance my dear. HAAAAAARAAAAACK! I am Pteranadon argentum sagiensis aka The Silver Dragon of Baja and Xian Xiao presenting his regards. As you must understand, I am a dragon.

And you claim that you are not a human? Rather odd that you claim this as if it made you special somehow. There are plenty of us who are not human but I am a friend to conscious beings of all kinds and flavours (mmmmmm tasttayyyyy!) be they material, mythical, ethereal, ectoplasmic, endoplasmic, elastic, plastic, spastic, spiritual or made of stool and spittle.

My dear Aranya, what a magical sounding name you have. With a name like that you must be female and very, very, very beautiful! But I am afraid I have a profound weakness for females of all kinds. We dragons are kind of stupid like that.

And Sarah. My true and dearest Love who I miss and cherish more and more with each passing day, hour, minute and second. How are you?

As for my two great projects, I expect and hope that you will hear of them one day but that is all I can say. I can say that one is a collaborative project and the other is a solo project. They occupy virtually all my time. While I have no need of money or fame, they are noble ventures which shall enrich the lives of man in pursuits both essential and leisure.

Inhumanly yours,

The Silver Dragon

“Humans need not apply” – my last want ad for a publicist. (I still ended up hiring a human – Stella. She does a good job, most of the time. She’s typing this for me right now, aren’t you Stella.)

“Idiot”
