Each slab taller than a person and sculpted with diverse animal images, the 11,600-year-old megaliths of Göbekli Tepe are arranged in circles—four have been excavated so far.

Their T-like shape is believed to be a human effigy, with the crossbar representing the “head,” and “arms” made up of carving down the sides. The carved lion, bottom, is a uniquely three-dimensional sculpture.
