Thanks for all your replies, everyone. It would be nice if we could agree on some conclusion, though, as my paper is due next week and I still don't know exactly what to write.
A couple of points:

1. There seems to be some disagreement as to what the emerald tablet was made of, or if it was actually even emerald or not. Does that mean that it isn't currently in anyone'e possession so it can't be studied?

2. Peter mentioned that the Thoth in the tablet is nothing like the Thoth of Egyptian mythology. I have to admit to not being as familiar with Thoth as some of the rest of you here. Is this true or not?

Thanks for everyone's help, by the way, I am sure learning a lot, not just by reading this topic but by reading all the discussions here. You guys are definitely an enlightened group.
