B-1 Bomber Down In Qatar

B-1 involved in ground incident after landing in Qatar says U.S. Air Force.

A B-1B Lancer, while taxiing after landing at an air base in Southwest Asia, was involved in a ground incident and caught fire at 9:10 p.m. local on April 4. The crew evacuated the aircraft and is safe. The fire was contained.

A board of inquiry has been appointed and will investigate the incident. - Source: U.S. Air Force

Here is what Springbored's Springboard has to say about the B-1 incident in Qatar.

It's crashed in Qatar; saying that there was an explosion upon landing (that does happen; on occasion the landing gear gives way on these birds). Hope everybody makes it (update: they did).

Now let's also hope there weren't any strategic weapons on board.

There's too many unknowns here for our liking. It's like nobody in DOD knew what this B-1 was up to, and that's a worry--Like what unit was the B-1 attached to? And what's a ground incident?

This doesn't sound like a landing gear issue. Could it be ... terrorism? Local Qatari folks have got to be around the flight line... We will have to wait and see until the investigation is over.

 Undecided

Sounds just like a technical malfunction.

The B-1 is "Old School" as far as the airframe is concerned. That is not to say it is fragile. In fact quite the opposite is true. It is a very robust aircraft.

It is not designed as a medium/high altitude bomber. It is a nap of the earth, pin point attack platform.

It is quite fast; however, anytime that you are down in the dirt, flying below the mountain tops, you open yourself up to far more ground fire than a traditional bomber would encounter at altitude.

It sounds to me like the old gal took a hit leaving(?) a target and made it home before the fire(?) took over.

It would not be the first time our "advanced" technology was swatted out of the air. I seem to remember that a F117 "Stealth Fighter" was shot down in the Balkans not all that long ago. By a mobile SAM launcher no less.
