The Bible (particularly the Old Testament) is a sexist document, written entirely by men, often meant as a way to oppress women.

Here's a little quiz I'd like everyone to take to illustrate my point:

And now, here are the questions and answers to that quiz, just in case you don't feel like taking it:

Answers To The "Plight of Women Bible Quiz"

1. What is an appropriate way to describe a woman in a second marriage?

Correct Answer: D (Polluted, Treacherous, and Adulterous!) “If a man put
away is wife, and she go from him, and become another man’s, shall he
return unto her again? shall not that land be greatly polluted”
(Jeremiah 3:1)? “Surely as a wife treacherously departeth from her
husband, so have ye dealt treacherously with me” (Jeremiah 3:20).
“[W]hosoever shall put away his wife, saving for the cause of
fornication, causeth her to commit adultery: and whosoever shall marry
her that is divorced committeth adultery” (Matthew 5:32).

2. Are women considered holy?

Correct Answer: C (It’s hard to say. The Bible says all men are holy
but is conspicuously silent about women.) “(As it is written in the law
of the Lord, Every male that openeth the womb shall be called holy to
the Lord)” (Luke 2:23).

3. An attractive woman who sleeps around is like . . .

Correct Answer: C (A jewel of gold in a pig’s nose.) “As a jewel of
gold in a swine’s snout, so is a fair woman which is without discretion”
(Proverbs 11:22).

4. Why did God make childbirth so painful?

Correct Answer: C (God decided to punish one woman’s disobedience by
making every woman for all eternity suffer.) “And the Lord God said
unto the woman, What is this that thou hast done? And the woman said,
The serpent beguiled me, and I did eat….Unto the woman he said, I will
greatly multiply thy sorrow and thy conception; in sorrow thou shalt
bring forth children; and thy desire shall be to thy husband, and he
shall rule over thee” (Genesis 3:13-16).

5. Are women generally moral?

Correct Answer: C (No.) “Who can find a virtuous woman? for her price
is far above rubies” (Proverbs 31:10).

6. Is a woman entitled to a share of her deceased father’s or spouse’s

Correct Answer: B (Only if she is the daughter and has no brothers. If
there are any male children, they get the entire estate and the daughter
gets nothing. Neither does the wife.) “And thou shalt speak unto the
children of Israel, saying, If a man die, and have no son, then ye shall
cause his inheritance to pass unto his daughter. And if he have no
daughter, then ye shall give his inheritance unto his brethren. And if
he have no brethren, then ye shall give his inheritance unto his
father’s brethren” (Number 27:8-10).

7. What are some things women cannot stop thinking about?

Correct Answer: D (B and C.) “Can a maid forget her ornaments, or a
bride her attire? yet my people have forgotten me days without number”
(Jeremiah 2:32).

8. What can a woman expect whose husband angers God?

Correct Answer B (God will have the couple’s male neighbor **** her.)
“Thus saith the Lord, Behold, I will raise up evil against thee out of
thine own house, and I will take thy wives before thine eyes, and give
them unto thy neighbor, and he shall lie with thy wives in the sight of
this sun” (2 Samuel 12:11). “And their houses shall be turned unto
others, with their fields and wives together: for I will stretch out my
hand upon the inhabitants of the land, saith the Lord” (Jeremiah 6:12).

9. What adjective best describes a woman’s act of conceiving a living
human being?

Correct Answer: D (Sinful.) “Behold, I was shapen in iniquity, and in
sin did my mother conceive me” (Psalms 51:5).

10. What connotation does God associate with the term “woman”?

Correct Answer: D (Weakness and disgust. Being called a “woman” is as
shameful as it gets.) “Behold, thy people in the midst of thee are
women: the gates of thy land shall be set wide open unto thine enemies:
the fire shall devour thy bars” (Nahum 3:13). “As for my people,
children are their oppressors, and women rule over them. O my people,
they which lead thee cause thee to err, and destroy the way of thy
paths” (Isaiah 3:12).

Here are some other religious quotes about women so you can also see where I'm coming from:

"As regards the individual nature, woman is defective and misbegotten,
for the active power of the male seed tends to the production of a
perfect likeness in the masculine sex; while the production of a woman
comes from defect in the active power...." Thomas Aquinas, Summa
Theologica,Q92, art. 1, Reply Obj. 1
"And a man will choose...any wickedness, but the wickedness of a
woman...Sin began with a woman and thanks to her we all must die"
Ecclesiasticus, 25:18, 19 & 33. 1
"And I find more bitter than death the woman, whose heart is snares and
nets, and her hands as bands: whoso pleaseth God shall escape from her;
but the sinner shall be taken by her." Ecclesiastes 7:26, from the
Hebrew Scriptures (Old Testament)

And here is an article that I think that every woman who comes to this forum should read before contemplating how much faith they should place in their own spiritualy:

Why Women Need Freedom From Religion

Organized religion always has been and remains the greatest enemy of
women's rights. In the Christian-dominated Western world, two bible
verses in particular sum up the position of women:
"I will greatly multiply thy sorrow and thy conception; in sorrow thou
shalt bring forth children; and thy desire shall be to thy husband, and
he shall rule over thee."--Genesis 3:16
By this third chapter of Genesis, woman lost her rights, her
standing--even her identity, and motherhood became a God-inflicted curse
degrading her status in the world.
In the New Testament, the bible decrees:
"Let the woman learn in silence with all subjection. But I suffer not a
woman to teach, nor to usurp authority over the man, but to be in
silence. For Adam was first formed, then Eve. And Adam was not deceived,
but the woman being deceived was in the transgression."--1 Tim. 2:11-14
One bible verse alone, "Thou shalt not suffer a witch to live" (Exodus
22:18) is responsible for the death of tens of thousands, if not
millions, of women. Do women and those who care about them need further
evidence of the great harm of Christianity, predicated as it has been on
these and similar teachings about women?
Church writer Tertullian said "each of you women is an Eve . . . You are
the gate of Hell, you are the temptress of the forbidden tree; you are
the first deserter of the divine law."
Martin Luther decreed: "If a woman grows weary and at last dies from
childbearing, it matters not. Let her die from bearing, she is there to
do it."
Such teachings prompted 19th-century feminist Elizabeth Cady Stanton to
write: "The Bible and the Church have been the greatest stumbling blocks
in the way of woman's emancipation."
The various Christian churches fought tooth and nail against the
advancement of women, opposing everything from women's right to speak in
public, to the use of anesthesia in childbirth (since the bible says
women must suffer in childbirth) and woman's suffrage. Today the most
organized and formidable opponent of women's social, economic and sexual
rights remains organized religion. Religionists defeated the Equal
Rights Amendment. Religious fanatics and bullies are currently engaged
in an outright war of terrorism and harassment against women who have
abortions and the medical staff which serves them. Those seeking to
challenge inequities and advance the status of women today are fighting
a massive coalition of fundamentalist Protestant and Catholic churches
and religious groups mobilized to fight women's rights, gay rights, and
secular government.
Why do women remain second-class citizens? Why is there a
religion-fostered war against women's rights? Because the bible is a
handbook for the subjugation of women. The bible establishes woman's
inferior status, her "uncleanliness," her transgressions, and
God-ordained master/servant relationship to man. Biblical women are
possessions: fathers own them, sell them into bondage, even sacrifice
them. The bible sanctions **** during wartime and in other contexts.
Wives are subject to Mosaic-law sanctioned "bedchecks" as brides, and
male jealousy fits and no-notice divorce as wives. The most typical
biblical labels of women are "harlot" and "****." They are described as
having evil, even satanic powers of allurement. Contempt for women's
bodies and reproductive capacity is a bedrock of the bible. The few role
models offered are stereotyped, conventional and inadequate, with bible
heroines admired for obedience and battle spirit. Jesus scorns his own
mother, refusing to bless her, and issues dire warnings about the fate
of pregnant and nursing women.
There are more than 200 bible verses that specifically belittle and
demean women. Here are just a few:
(See Woe To The Women: The Bible Tells Me So for a more comprehensive
Genesis 2:22 Woman created from Adam's rib
3:16 Woman cursed: maternity a sin, marriage a bondage
19:1-8 **** virgins instead of male angels
Exodus 20:17 Insulting Tenth Commandment, considering a wife to be
21:7-11 Unfair rules for female servants, may be sex slaves
22:18 "Thou shalt not suffer a witch to live"
38:8 Women may not enter tabernacle they must support
Leviticus 12:1-14 Women who have sons are unclean 7 days
12:4-7 Women who have daughters are unclean 14 days
15:19-23 Menstrual periods are unclean
19:20-22 If master has sex with engaged woman, she shall be scourged
Numbers 1:2 Poll of people only includes men
5:13-31 Barbaric adulteress test
31:16-35 "Virgins" listed as war booty
Deuteronomy 21:11-14 **** manual
22:5 Abomination for women to wear men's garments, vice-versa
22:13-21 Barbaric virgin test
22:23-24 Woman raped in city, she & her rapist both stoned to death
22:28-29 Woman must marry her rapist
24:1 Men can divorce woman for "uncleanness," not vice-versa
25:11-12 If woman touches foe's ****, her hand shall be cut off
Judges 11:30-40 Jephthah's nameless daughter sacrificed
19:22-29 Concubine sacrificed to rapist crowd to save man
I Kings 11:1-4 King Solomon had 700 wives & 300 concubines
Job 14:1-4 "Who can bring a clean thing out of an unclean? not one . .
Proverbs 7:9-27 Evil women seduce men, send them to hell
11:22 One of numerous Proverbial putdowns
Isaiah 3:16-17 God scourges, rapes haughty women
Ezekiel 16:45 One of numerous obscene denunciations
Matthew 24:19 "[woe] to them that are with child"
Luke 2:22 Mary is unclean after birth of Jesus
I Corinthians 11:3-15 Man is head of woman; only man in God's image
14:34-35 Women keep in silence, learn only from husbands
Ephesians 5:22-33 "Wives, submit . . ."
Colossians 3:18 More "wives submit"
I Timothy 2:9 Women adorn selves in shamefacedness
2:11-14 Women learn in silence in all subjection; Eve was sinful, Adam
Why should women--and the men who honor women--respect and support
religions which preach women's submission, which make women's
subjugation a cornerstone of their theology?
When attempts are made to base laws on the bible, women must beware. The
constitutional principle of separation between church and state is the
only sure barrier standing between women and the bible.

No need for anyone to respond to any of these posts, by the way, and have a big, long drawn out discussion on equality. I just wanted to give the women of this forum (and maybe some of the enlightened men here, too), something to think about before passing any rash judgments on anything or anyone.

By the way, if this looks familiar to some of you, that is because it comes from my original version of this topic here:;f=15;t=000280#000000

Yes, the good old days, Bianca.  The thread was started two years ago, I basically joined Atlantis Rising at the time to punish Calvin Noble (who, by some quirk also seems to be here, though far more quetly), and, as you can see, he is one irritating individual.

I will miss Porthos, though, who was also a main contributor to that thread.  She died in the middle of it, a short time after meeting all of us.

The Bible is not, nor has it ever been, kind in it's treatment of women.  One wonders what would have been had Christianity not built it's faith around a book used to justify both racism and sexism. A more "equal" document was needed.

My computer died the day before you posted, so it's not as if I ignored your reply.

I am sorry I never knew Porthos.  I came to AR in June '05 and left six months later in
disgust.  Before the "Byron Incident".

Back to the Bible:  I rather think that we should wonder what Christianity would be
like if Saul of Tarsus - who had never even met Jesus - had not taken over the
whole movement and turned it into something that did not resemble Jesus' words
in the least.

Saul/Paul was a woman-hating, warped zealot and that's what the religion ended up
being.  Christianity should be called Paulinism........

Love and Peace,
