Subject: horse (colt)
Period: First Iron Age, VII-VI cent. b.C. (fase IV-2)
Description: the horse is normally depicted with its rider, always a warrior showing its weapons and its strenght. Once again a theme related to a male subject, which was firstly executed in the beginning of the Iron Age. In this case a colt was probably depicted: it is possibile to argue that by looking to its long legs.
To notice: with more than 900 figures the rock n. 1 is the best engraved and the most interesting rock of the Park of Naquane. The parallel scratches show the direction of the last glacier movement, which retired from the Alps about 14-12.000 BP. Sito: Parco Naziona, roccia 1
Soggetto: cavallo (puledro)
Periodo: Prima Età del Ferro, VII-VI sec. a.C. (fase IV-2)
Descrizione: il cavallo è normalmente raffigurato insieme al suo cavaliere, di solito un guerriero che mostra le sue armi e la sua forza Ancora una volta quindi un soggetto legato alla sfera maschile. Le prime figure di cavalcatura appaiono all'inizio del'età del Ferro. Qui siamo di fronte alla probabile raffigurazione di un puledro (vedi le lunghe gambe).
Da notare: con oltre 900 figure la roccia 1 è la più riccamente incisa e la più interessante del Parco di Naquane. Le strie parallele indicano la direzione del movimento del grande ghiacciaio che si ritirò dalle Alpi alla fine dell'ultima era glaciale, circa 14-12.000 anni BP.

On the Cemmo 3 boulder (2400-2200 b.C., exposed in the Naquane National Park) we can find many superimposed layers of Copper Age engravings.
The crowned figure can be interpreted as a solar god symbol. Sul masso di Cemmo n. 3 (2400-2200 A.C, esposto presso il Parco Nazionale delle Incisioni Rupestri di Naquane a Capo di Ponte) si possono notare varie fasi sovrapposte di incisioni dell'età del Rame.
La figura coronata può esssere interpretata come un simbolo di una divinità solare.

Iron Age figures represent the 80% of Valcamonica rock art.
They are often beautiful and very well executed.
Here you can see an Iron Age (IV century b.C.) hunting scene with the deer bit by a dog.
We are in the Naquane National Park of engravings, one of the most important in Europe for open air engravings.
In Valcamonica le figure risalenti all'età del Ferro sono oltre l'80%.
Sono spesso eseguite con molta cura e attenzione formale.
In questa immagine una scena di caccia dell'età del Ferro (IV sec. A.C.), dove un cane morde un cervo da dietro.
Il Parco Nazionale delle Incisioni Rupestri di Naquane è uno dei più importanti in Europa per quanto riguarda le incisioni all'aria aperta.

The most ancient engravings in Valcamonica are the so called "topographic" ones.
They belong to the late Neolithic or to the first Copper Age.
They probably represent some agricultural feature, like the sheaves of cereals in the field.
Here a rock at Le Crus (Pia' d'Ort)
Le incisioni più antiche in Valcamonica sono le cosiddette figure topografiche.
Risalgono alla fine del Neolitico e alle prime fasi dell'età del Rame
Rappresentano con buona probabilità un paesaggio agricolo antropizzato, con elementi quali i covoni di cereali nei campi (qui una roccia prersso il sito di Le Crus, Pia' d'Ort)

Description: these horned animals (probably chamois and not ibexes, as horns are not rounded but hooked) have been depicted in a style (curved back, stick legs) which is typical of this Copper Age phase. In Copper Age stelae and boulders is normal to have rows and/or columns of animal like deers, ibexes, bovids, all depicted in a quite perfect order. The suggestion of totemic animals (or of mythological animals or beings) is strong.
To notice: this Ossimo boulder was found underground in the Ossimo village while excavating to build a garage.

Periodo: tarda età del Rame (Campaniforme), fase IIIA2 dell'arte rupestre camuna (2400-2200 AC).
Descrizione: tenendo conto delle corna ad uncino e non ad arco, si tratta più probabilmente di camosci, piuttosto che di stambecchi. Lo stile (dorso ricurvo, zampe a bastoncino) è tipico di questa fase dell'età del Rame. Le scene costituite da file o da colonne di cervi, camosci e bovidi sono comuni sulle stele e sui massi incisi di questo periodo. E' forte la suggestione interpretativa legata alla raffigurazione di animali totemici o mitologici.
Da notare: il masso di Ossimo n. 8 è stato trovato sottoterra all'interno del paese di Ossimo nel corso di scavi per la realizzazione di un'autorimessa

Le scene costituite da file o da colonne di cervi, camosci e bovidi in perfetto ordine sono comuni sulle stele e sui massi incisi di questo periodo. E' forte la suggestione interpretativa legata alla raffigurazione di animali totemici o mitologici. Qui si nota il cervo maschio con il suo harem di femmine.
Da notare: le grandi corna ricurve del cervo maschio suggeriscono la rappresentazione di una figura solare

Subject: dagger
Period: Ancient Bronze Age, phase IIIB of Valcamonica rock art (2200-2000 BC)
Description: this dagger shows a curved shoulder of the blade, probably pertaining to a Bronze Age type of dagger. On the contrary Copper Age (particularly the so-called Remedello kind) daggers show a triangular blade with a straight shoulder.
To notice: the globular handle.

Soggetto: pugnale
Periodo: età del Bronzo Antico, fase IIIB dell'arte rupestre camuna (2200-2000 AC).
Descrizione: questo pugnale mostra una lama a spalla ricurva, caratteristica dei pugnali dell'età del Bronzo. Al contrario i pugnali dell'età del Rame, in particolare quelli cosiddetti remedelliani, hanno una lama triangolare a spalla diritta.
Da notare: l'impugnatura globulare

Subject: "oranti" (so-called praying figures, i.e. orthogonal arms and legs schematic anthropomorphic figures)
Period: middle-final Bronze Age (XV-VIII cent. BC)
Description: the figure on the left is headed, the figure on the right isn't. On the extreme left we can recognize a leg and an outgoing foot of a third anthropomorphic figure.
To notice: Naquane rock 50 hosts the most important concentration in Valcamonica rock art of the so-called "oranti".
Most of them show a male sex, represented by a stick, while some female figures are characterized by a round dot between the legs.

Soggetto: oranti (antropomorfi schematici ad arti ortogonali e contrapposti).
Periodo: Bronzo medio-finale (XV-VIII sec. AC).
Descrizione: la figura sulla sinistra è dotata di testa, che in quella sulla destra non è rappresentata. Dall'estremo margine sinistro spunta una gamba ed un piede (rivolto all'infuori) di una terza figura.
Da notare: la roccia 50 di Naquane ospita la più grande concentrazione di oranti dell'arte rupestre camuna.
La maggior parte di essi sono di sesso maschile, rappresentato mediante un segmento a bastoncello, mentre le figure femminili sono caratterizzate da un pallino tra le gambe.

Periodo: Bronzo Finale - prima età del Ferro (X-VIII sec. AC).
Descrizione: in tutta l'arte rupestre della Valcamonica si possono trovare solo 7 figure di telaio, tutte concentrate sulla roccia 1 di Naquane. E' uno dei pochi soggetti legati alla sfera femminile. Non può essere escluso un significato metaforico o legato a racconti mitologici.
Da notare: la struttura dell'intelaiatura in legno e i pesi del telaio.

Description: the interpretation of the showel is still today very doubtful: is it a rasor? A tool to collect ash? A cooking item? A trap? Male subjects in Valcamonica Iron Age rock art may suggest the first interpetation, although the handle of left shovel may suggest a way to manage hot temperature, like in the fire.
To notice: the hunting scene (dog and deer, right up) and a long-necked goose (left up).

Soggetto: palette
Periodo: prima età del Ferro (VIII-VII sec. AC).
Descrizione: sussistono a tutt'oggi molti problemi nell'interpretazione delle figure di palette. Si tratta di rasoi? di attrezzi per cucinare? di palette per raccogliere braci o cenere? Di una trappola? Da una parte la predominanza di elementi maschili nell'arte rupestre camuna dell'età del Ferro potrebbe far propendere per la prima ipotesi, dall'altra le protrusioni della paletta di sinistra potrebbero avere la funzione di rendere maneggiabile un attrezzo connesso al fuoco.
Da notare: la scena di caccia (cane e cervo, in alto a destra) e un'oca dal lungo collo (in alto a sinistra).

Description:
the so-called "Bedolina Map" is one of the most known Valcamonica engraved rocks, probably because it seems to constitute a real topographical map with fields, paths and houses. Previously dated by Anati to the Bronze Age, it is now dated to the Iron Age (Tuconi - Footsteps of Man), after a closer examination of the superimpositions among figures of different periods. The landscape representation seems real, although only fields and paths are depicted (probably in a metaphoric way), and not houses, which belong to another phase.
To notice: Differences can be noticed regarding the much more ancient Neolithic topographies: fields are square instead of rectangular and more distant one from the other. A dot surrounded by a circle is often present.

la cosiddetta "Mappa di Bedolina" è una delle più famose rocce incise della Valcamonica, grazie probabilemente al fatto che sembra rappresentare un territorio reale, con campi, sentieri e abitazioni. Datata in precedenza da Anati all'età del Bronzo, è ora attribuita all'età del Ferro (Turconi - Orme dell'Uomo), grazie ad un più attento esame delle sovrapposizioni. La raffigurazione di elementi del paesaggio sembra effettiva, benché siano da attribuire alla mappa solo i campi ed i sentieri (raffigurati probabilmente in via metaforica), e siano da escludere le abitazioni, che appartengono ad una fase più tarda.
Da notare: le differenze tra le figure topografiche dell'età del ferro e quelle molto più antiche della fine del Neolitico: qui a Bedolina (età del Ferro) i campi sono quadrati invece che rettangolari e sono più distanziati l'uno dall'altro. Al loro interno è spesso presente un pallino cerchiato.

Some times it is possible to find very large figures. In this case we can observe a first-middle Iron Age warrior (VI cent. b.C.) showing proudly a spear and a shield.
Duels, weapons and strongness, all male related, are the most important subjects in the Iron Age Rock Art.
Here we are on the rock n. 4 of the Paspardo in Valle site (900 m over the sea level). This rock is one of the most important of the entire Valcamonica rock art.
A volte le figure sono di grandi dimensioni. In questo caso possiamo osservare la figura di un guerriero della prima età del Ferro (Vi sec. A.C.) che ostenta con orgoglio lancia e scudo.
Duelli, armi e dimostrazione di forza costituiscono le tematiche più importanti nell'arte rupestre dell'età del Ferro.
Qui siamo a Paspardo, località in Valle, roccia n. 4 (900 m di quota), una delle più importanti di tutta la Valcamonica

Rock Art in the Alps - Mt. Bego Petroglyphs

Mt. Bego and Valcamonica are the two most important alpine rock art sites. Regarding the quantity and the quality of engraved rocks we can't find any equal in the other alpine valleys.
In Valcamonica some 200-300.000 engraved figures are estimated to exist, while in Mt. Bego 35,000 engravings were traced (and counted).
Natural blackboards
It is often claimed that this huge concentration was due to the presence of two open air sanctuaries, or sacred mountains.
Although we may consider the possible religious meanings as very important in the choice of this site by the prehistoric artists, we must also consider that the rocks, sandstone in both Mt. Bego and Valcamonica, are not exfoliated, not too hard, and are perfectly polished by the glacier, showing most surfaces similar to a natural blackboard, ready to receive the signs engraved by alpine cultures.
So we must find in the rock itself the main ground for such a large concentration of pecked figures.

The Park
The engraved area in the Mt. Bego region covers (mainly) two valleys: "Valle delle Meraviglie" (valley of marvels) and "Fontanalba" (white fountain). We are in the Maritime Alps, near Tenda. This area was Italian until the second world war. After 1947 it became French, joining with the region of Nice, which had become French by 1860.
The entire engraved zone is inside the National Park of Mercantour, a beautiful high mountain (up to 3000 m) zone in France, except a section on the Italian side, which is included in the Argentera Park.
We can find rock engravings over 2000 m of altitude, up to 2500-2600 m, so the rocks are covered by snow from October-November till June. When they are free of snow, the engravings show beautiful colors, from red to green to violet.
The summer mountain tourism is highly developed; people come to see the engravings but also to walk along alpine paths and to watch wild animals like chamois and ibexes.
Shepherds are still working and living here in summer, taking hundreds of cows and sheep up to the mountain pastures.
The area is well protected by "rangers": in both the "Valle delle Meraviglie" and "Fontanalba" only certain paths are open and free to the public.
To see the engravings best, visitors are advised to join guided tours, departing two or three times each morning, in the summer only. It's not easy to find available places to sleep in the mountain refuges: it's better to phone many weeks before. Here are some useful phone numbers:
