Here are two pictures of "something" near the Meroe pyramids that I haven't heard anything about.  They may be more modern structures.  I may have showed them to you before.  I don't know how to go about finding out what they are.  The first one is about a half mile west of the south pyramids, and the second one is about a half mile NE of the south pyramids.

I am sorry the first structure in the shape of a horseshoe is not the hippodrome with barracks for guards described by Plato in Critias 117c. Claudius Ptolemy the geographer mentioned such an “ippodromos aithiopias” but he located it in Maurusia actual Mauritania below the Atlas mountains of Morocco. This was surely due to the wrong view of the orientation of Africa in ancien times (see the map on my following post).

So I received recently the information from Claude Rilly the french specialist of the Meroitic language : this modern structure is the "Meroe Lounge", a hotel under luxuous tents for the visitors of Meroe...

As for the second rectangular structure, I don't know if it is ancient or modern...

Did the island extend to the ocean, or did the mountain extend to the ocean?

From Herodotus

Therefore passing these by I willl make mention of the king who came after these, who name is Sesostris. He (the priest said) first of all set out with ships of war from the Arabian gulf and subdued those who dwelt by the shores of the Erythraian Sea, until as he sailed he came to a sea which could no further be navigated by reason of shoals:

When I was checking things out to see if Blue Hue's theory could be correct, I found where Herodotus says the above.  Having posted that tho, there is some doubt as to whether or not there WAS a king named Sesostris.  Supposedly this is a combination of 3 different kings or some such thing and it seems that unless you know the ancient myths inside and out, you won't be able to figure out who he really was.  Some say he did exist, but at a different time.  The interesting thing of note, was that if the "Arabian Gulf" (Red Sea) was the body of water that had the shoals in it, then perhaps Atlantis was around there somewhere.  In my thread Plato's Atlantis My Theory, you can read some of the stuff I came across in researching for Atlantis in Aden.

Not exactly at Meroe but at least in the Red Sea:

Blue holes are the results of rainwater having soaked through fractures of limestone bedrock onto the water table of glacial sea levels during the Pleistocene epoch (ice age), some 15,000 years ago.

Did the island extend to the ocean, or did the mountain extend to the ocean?

It is the mountain which extend to the Red Sea. Semien mountains are  big massive mountains of volcanic origin East of Ethiopia and East of Lake Tana where the Blue Nile issues. See Wikipedia below :
http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Semien_Mountains.
It is now protected as a National Park and by UNESCO as it contained very rare species of animals as the Ethiopian wolf--also known as the Semien jackal, the "most endangered canid." I think this one is the representation of the animal of god Seth in Egypt (as a reddish wolf).

N.B. The island of Meroe is limited at East by the Atbara river and at West by the Nile that Egyptians named Okeanos...

I don't see any relationship with Atlantis. Anyway the 9000 years before Amasis are too much ancient time for a developed civilization knowing the industry of metals. It is typically the end of the Bronze Age and the beginning of the Iron Age in Africa. See below :

From Herodotus : A king Sesostris.
There is some doubt as to whether or not there WAS a king named Sesostris.  Supposedly this is a combination of 3 different kings or some such thing and it seems that unless you know the ancient myths inside and out, you won't be able to figure out who he really was.  Some say he did exist, but at a different time.

I have more informations on this king Sesostris of ancient authors. But it is not the good location to develop this subject here, although this important Egyptian person could have a strong relationship with Poseidon, thus with Atlantis. If you are interested about that, I could give you my theory in another thread. This person lived about 1500 B.C. in Egypt and Kush and is not yet very well defined by historians because the witnesses of his deeds discovered by archaeologists are not sufficient to assert all the reports of ancient authors about him. Ancient authors made confusion about his real name. Anyway during his long life he was a proteiform person as he changed at least two times his identity and travelled all along the world towards East and spent a great part of his life in Africa.

I would love to see what you have on Sesostris.  I'm not sure what thread it should go in though.  Maybe you could open another thread under Dynasties of Egypt.

Yes, you are right. The title of the topic could be "Pharaoh Sesostris of ancient authors". But presently I have only written a few pieces of texts in French on this subject. Now I need some time to write a structured report in English.
But it will be a great pleasure for me to communicate my theory on this forum.

With regards,

Therese

Dear Titeia,

Are you really thinking that Atlantis was founded ~ 1500 BC? (I am sorry, perhaps i missed something...) I could agree with newer dating for the Catastrophe that sunk Atlantis, but not its foundation... (please forgive if i sound provocative, it isn't my intention). If you would be so kind to explain, i would appreciate.

regards,

Kings of Kush always claimed to be the heirs of their ancient Egyptian rulers. The period when Kush was goverened by Egyptians viceroys began with the 18th dynasty. It was around 1500 B.C. that Kamose was the leader of the Theban armies  and subued the Kushites of Kerma. His most known successors Thutmose I and III, as well as Amenophis III had to quell several rebellions of Kushites against Egypt. However Kush remained vassal of Egypt until 1100 B.C.
It is my opinion that Kamose who was a great warrior and sailor, was reared in Napata and spent a great part of his life reigning on this part of Africa, before to reach the throne of Thebes at the age of 67 years taking the name of Thutmose I.
This scheme is not admitted by egyptologists because available archaeological proofs are unsufficient to support the reports of ancient authors on the subject.
However it is my opinion that the character of Kamose corresponds the Greek god Poseidon named Amun by Libyans and Kushites as a deity of water and fertility. So the Poseidon-Amun founder of Atlantis could be Kamose-Thutmose I reigning in Meroe according to Jew traditions concerning Moses life, which are not in the canonic Torah . (Because Kamose was also the person who appears as Moses in the Jew Traditions, Exodus corresponding to the exit of Hyksos and a rebelled  part of the Egyptian army out of Avaris after to be besieged by king Ahmose.)
In some reports of Herodote and Diodorus, Kamose was also named Sesostris or Sesoosis for reasons that I will explained in the topic "Egyptian dynasties" on this forum.

Dear Titeia,

Thanks, i don't really have any "knowledge" regarding the two kingdoms, actually, since the foundation of Atlantis was so late i just couldn't imagine the "rise and fall" of an Empire in so little time. but i guess one has to agree there is nothing against it either..

Do you have a period for Atlantis disappearance? I ask this because i don't have a valid date for it...

Look forward to read your new post!

Regards,

M
