FROM:  ATLANTIS:- Myth or Reality - by Murry Hope

Rudolph Steiner, founder of the Anthroposophical Society, seems to have shared
many views with the Theosophists prior to setting up his own organization.  In his book "Cosmic Memory", Steiner devotes a chapter to what he refers to as "our Atlantean Ancestors", who, he assures us, differed considerable from present-day
people.  This difference was evident not only in physical appearance, but also in spiritual faculties.

Logical reason, arithmetic, mathematics and all those faculties we have now come to associate with left-bran hemisphere activity, he tells us, were totally absent.  But by way of compensation, the Atlanteans were gfted with excptional powers of
MEMORY.  In other words, Steiner's Atlanteans had no need to learn their arithme-
tical tables because they could remember the results from previous occasions and,
in defence of his statement he offers the premise:

"One need only realize that each time a new faculty develops in an organism, an old faculty loses power and acuteness.  The man of today is superior to the Atlantean in logical reasoning, in the ability to combine.  On the other hand, memory has deteriorated.  Nowadays man thinks in concepts; the Atlantean thought in images.  When an image appeared in his soul, he remembered a great many similar images which he had already experienced.  He directed his judgement accordingly.  For this reason, all teaching at that time was different from what it became later.  It was not calculated to furnish the child with rules, to sharpen his reason.  Instead, life was presented to him in vivid images, so that later he could remember as much as possible when he had to act under particular con-
ditions."

Steiner concurred with the Theosophists on the matter of root races and their subdivisions and recommended his pupils to Scott-Elliot's book for the details.  He claimed to have gathered his information concerning the past of the Earth and other planets in the solar system from the Akashic records, which he incorporated in a series of essays entiled "From the Akasha Chronicle".  Referring to how the Earth looked in ancient Atlantean times, (that period indicated by the Theosophists rather than Plato's), he states:

"It was said that at that time the air was saturated with water mist vapours.  Man
lived in the water mist, which in certain regions never lifted to the point where the
air was completely clear.  Sun and Moon could not be seen as they are today, but were surrounded by coloured coronas.  A distribution of rain and sunsine, such as occurs at present, did not exist at that time.  One can clairvoyantly explore this old land; the phenomenon of the rainbow did not exist at that time...."

This question of "exploring the Akasha" is ever a thorny one for the sceptic and I
have to confess that there are times when the whole concept bothers me.  With so many people claimingaccess to this supposed infinite library of universal information with such contradictory results, from a psychological standpoint, one has to consider both the "wishful thinking" and "frustrated story-teller" syndromes as possible
answers to much of this purported viewing.  On the other hand (and I am more
inclined to this view), one can unconsciously 'tune in' to the collective unconscious, the data banks of which must obviously contain the memory of all that has taken place in the history of our planet from the very beginning.  Therefore, the open-minded writer, artist, scientist or philosopher is more likely to stumble upon the truth than the person who undertakes a calculated search of the Akasha during altered states of consciousness, the latter being more likely to present the seeker with what he or she is "wanting" to see, rather than what actually is or was.  Sudden flashes of ancient memories, the fabric of a dream or "deja' vu" would seem to provide more accurate information and a great deal of inspiration.
