Tonight is Burns Night - a great Scottish knees-up with much whisky flowing, haggis and neeps
being eaten, songs sung and poems recited.

All of it dedicated to Robert Burns, Scotland's national poet, who wrote Auld Lang Syne, My Love
is Like a Red Red Rose etc and his work is credited with giving inspiration to liberalism and socialism.
His ' A Man's a Man for all that' made him a special favourite in Communist Russia.

Born on 25 January 1759 at 7 am in Alloway, near Ayr, Scotland, he had a hard childhood being expected to work on the family's farm which gave him a rheumatic heart condition, probably
contributing to his early death at 37 years old on 21 July 1796 - although a dissolute adult life-
style didn't help either.

Even poverty stricken children were well educated in Scotland in those days and he started to
write poetry in his teens.

A great womaniser, he had one illegitimate child with his mother's maid, and then twins out of
wedlock with his future wife, who went on to bear him another 7 children. His erratic love life
caused scandal and he was about to set up home with another woman when he died.

With Jupiter on his Capricorn Ascendant he'd be outgoing, positive and ambitious.

His Sun, Venus and Mars were in Aquarius so he was friendly, humanitarian, passionately enthusiastic,
a communicator. Those planets all oppose Neptune in the 8th, so he was creative, at times lost in another world, yearning for transcendent bliss (Neptune in 8th) and prone to drinking too much.

His Sagittarius Moon close to Pluto in the 12th squares Uranus so no surprise that his emotional life
was tumultuous and constantly changing. With his Moon's Node falling in the 7th house long term commitment was difficult for him.

Born, intriguingly, the last time Pluto was in Sagittarius and, even more intriguingly, when Uranus
was in Pisces, he had natally the Uranus-Pluto square that's in place at the moment - so was
destined to live through times of great change and upheaval, such as the French Revolution.

One of the meanings of Uranus in Pisces is the discovery of new creative forms and he is seen as
one of the founders of the Romantic Movement which followed, as well as supporting republicanism.

Uranus trines his midheaven so he clearly followed an unusual path in life and sextiles onto Mercury
in Capricorn, forming a mini grand trine with Mercury on the focal point, accentuating his writing talents.

With his Sun, Venus, Mars, Saturn and Uranus in the 2nd, finding financial security would never be easy for him, though he did at one point work for the Customs and Excise (taxes), making sense of a heavily populated second house.

He died when Uranus (then in his 8th) was just past the Pluto opposition, thus completing one cycle
in his life having been born on the square. Saturn had just moved into his 6th house of health, opposing his Moon and Pluto and squaring his Uranus, which suggests a heavy burden for someone with an already weakened physical condition.

And Pluto was heading for a difficult conjunction to Saturn shortly thereafter.
