Thanks Rebecca  ,  So I guess that is the official explanation of mountain ranges. I was not aware that they had concluded that even the long ranges are all caused by movement of the lithospheric plates . It obviously falls under the heading of Plate Tectonics. So the mystery is pushed back to what causes the plates to move the way they do.Convection currents in the mantle ??  I don't think they picture the movement of convection currents properly  . They always envision a stable diameter Earth in there models.I think that is out of date.  I'm for the Earth Expansion theory . Have you heard of it ??
