Still, the Soviets and scientists in Eastern European countries have
often taken Atlantis more seriously than the Americans have.

Zdenek Kukal, a skeptical Czech geologist, considered the possibility
that the current islands of the mid-Atlantic ridge are the remains of

All the islands on the ridge are extremely volcanic and unstable.  The
Azores, located west of Spain, are one of the most likely locations for
Atlantis. All lie on an extensive submarine plateau that has a depth of
a little more than a mile and an area of about 50,000 square miles.

The Azores are an active site of seafloor spreading and have substantial
earthquake and volcanic activity.  There are many flat-topped submarine
peaks in the area.  Of special interest is a major gravity anomaly, indica-
ting an excess of mass under the Azores plateau.

Also intriguing is the presence of numerous stone pebbles of non-local
origin; granite, sandstone, limestone and other, with no good explanation
of how they got there.
