Ames, Ia. -- A crowd of around 1,000 people celebrated the news of Barack Obama?s showing in the latest Iowa poll with thunderous applause and screams as supporters announced the news just minutes after it was announced online tonight.
The event, at Iowa State University?s Memorial Union, is the last 2007 campaign stop for Obama. He took the stage at around 9:40 p.m., an hour and 10 minutes later than scheduled, telling the crowd that ?Democrats have been waiting for 2008 for a while.?
Obama apologized to the crowd for being late. Ames was his fifth stop of the day. His schedule was partly thrown off when a train in Boone stalled his motorcade.
The Des Moines Register?s most recent Iowa Poll indicated he had 32 percent of the support of likely Iowa Democratic caucusgoers. That was ahead of New York Sen. Hillary Clinton, who had 25 percent and former North Carolina Sen. John Edwards who won 24 percent.
?It?s beyond the margin of error so we just might pull this thing off, Iowa. Who would have thunk it?? Obama asked the crowd.
Roughly 25 percent of the crowd who indicated they plan to caucus raised their hand when Obama asked if they remain undecided.
?We?re coming after you. You?re in our sights,? Obama said.
