What is even more frightening, Eta Carinae is only 8000 light years away. Eta Carinae is estimated to be over 100 times more massive than the sun and is thought to be one of the most massive stellar objects in the galaxy. A giant outburst 150 years ago signaled what many believe was the beginning of an explosion so hugh that it would eclipse the extrasolar explosion detected on December 27, 2004 - and that explosion was over six times more distant that Eta Carinae.
