Well, just spent time looking thru a link on page 1 of this thread about red haired giants ... ancient remains in North America.
And it brought to mind two stories.

First one: Once I met this guy in Wal-Mart parking lot recently and we chatted cuz his pick up truck's rear door panel had this beautifully painted eagle in flight. Turns out he was a genuine "local", having grown up in this area of east coastal Florida in the Depression era of the 1920's and 1930's. (a period in Florida's history that was way before the massive explosion of condo's, high rises, shopping centers and tourist traps) We were talking on and on then he relates how when he was a kid, him and his buddies would wander the vacant landscape, tearing down the mounds of dirt cuz they knew there were "stuff" to play with burried inside like giant bones - he specifically says they were huge compared to like his dad in size. He says they could do this destruction because no one cared. Decades later, all the lands here have been plowed over, either for cattle grazing, orange groves or suburbia.

Second story: women of documented historical antiquity would dye their hair red or blond as a status symbol. A woman's hair color was her rank, the highest rank being the red's and blond's. Some societies conversly would kill red or blond haired children.

An as an aside, toddlers and preschoolers today who have pure red and/or pure blond hair are more frequently ill with colds, more prone to digestive problems, allergies, appear to have difficulty in peer relations (hot headed or aggressive), and generally are less well adjusted socially to conforming to the "rules" than their classmates of brown and black hair. Reds and blonds are more spontaneous, generally are more boisterous, and laugh and cry more, too. Perhaps these traits that have come down from antiquity through these toddler's and preschoolers ancestors' DNA were the reasons why they were once the tribes "leaders of the Pack."
