THE ANGLO-SAXON SUNDIAL

Semi-circular and situated on the exterior south wall of the church. Date: 7th or early 8th century. Believed to be the earliest sundial in its original place to be found in the United Kingdom.

The design of the serpent has close similarities to representations of the Teutonic creator God who formed part of the pre-Christian religion of the Angles who settled in Northumbria and Yorkshire.

The beast may represent the God of chaos and creativity. The three lines on the face correspond to the three daylight hours of prayer kept by the monks -Terce, Sext and None.

It is not known for certain who built Escomb Church.

When it was built; or why it was built in this particular location.

The first written evidence to the village of 'EDICUM' dates to the end of the 10th century when the village was mortgaged by the Bishop of Durham to some Viking earls (it was later returned).

However, various architectural and archaeological evidence suggest a much earlier date of construction; sometime between 670 and 690 A.D. seems likely.

The general shape and style of the building suggest that it could not have been constructed later than the end of the 7th century, and that it belongs to the earliest period of Northumbrian Christianity.

Bewcastle Cross - Anglo-Saxon sundial

This is the oldest existing sundial in the UK.

A vertical sundial is carved into a richly decorated Anglo-Saxon cross at Bewcastle in Cumbria,
probably in the late seventh century.

The sundial is the fan-shaped carving about half way up the column.

                                                               All Saints, Old Byland

The Church

How old is this church? Much of the stone work is early Norman in style.

If you go out into the churchyard and look up at the east wall of the nave, above the roof of the chancel,
there you will see, embedded into the stonework, the old coping stones of an earlier, lower roof.

This must have belonged to a church predating the Norman period.

Judging from where that roof comes down, the south wall of the chancel and the north wall of the nave both in fact belonged to the original Saxon church.

The primitive arch over the blocked-off priest’s door into the chancel also looks Saxon.

Embedded in the outer wall of the porch on the eastern side is an ancient Saxon sundial.
