The largest sector of Satanism (the Anton Levey crowd) is a belief system which believes that Satan is actually the creator.  They actually reverse rolls of God and Satan as put forth in the bible.  They believe that they are in the majority and consequently will win in the end.  They are most often very open with their beliefs and won't hesitate to tell you where they stand.  Karl Marx and Ozzie Osborne are famous Satanists.   There are many other sects who claim to worship Satan such as witches and Druids.  Usually these are known for their human sacrifices and blood drinking.

Luciferianism is actually quite different.  The name Lucifer actually means "light bearer".  Those subscribing to this belief system believe that God wanted man to be dumb and Lucifer freed man from God's bondage of ignorance in the garden of eden.  Consequently, they were illumined (they saw the light).  They believe that are doing God's negative work and will be rewarded in the afterlife.  This is the reason that they use names like the Illuminati.  In the Skull and Bones rituals, they ask for the the "Illumined One" to enter into them.  They believe themselves to be illumined (enlightened) and the rest of us to be dumb sheep.  This core belief is plainly spelled out through out Masonic writings and in the writings of Blavatsky. http://www.google.com/search?num=100&hl=en&q=Blavatsky+lucifer+press&btnG=Search

The writings of Blavatsky and the Masons are heavily followed by most of our political leaders today.  These beliefs have crept into Christianity and are widely taught in churches.

Some say that Lucifer and Satan are one in the same and others say that they are not.  No one has a definitive answer to that question.  There have been entire books addressing this single question.

2 Corinthians 11:14  And no marvel; for Satan himself is transformed into an angel of light.

According to William Schnoebelen's "Lucifer Dethroned" there are five types.

1.  Low-level satanism believes Satan is not real, but merely a symbol.  This is the official position of the Church of Satan.
2.  Mid-level-  Satan exists, but is not evil, just misunderstood
3.  Upper-level- Satan exists but evil is better than good.
4.  Master-  Satan is the rightful god of the universe.
5.  Highest-  Satan will beat God and rule from Hell.

I wouldn't doubt if this "Satan" was some kind of demented Saurian or Dero that was into exo-cannabalism.

You look at all the references of lizards and lizard like people eating humans throughout history it may very well be the ET route in which the Satanism myth is rooted.

Like Lucifer the bringer of light.  In all reality Luciem Ferre was a Venusian emissary trying to bring enlightenment to Earth humanity but the kakisto-crowd decided to slanderize Luciem's good name.

Satan actually is simply a bastardization of pagan beliefs throughout the ages.  He first appears in the story of Job in the Bible, not as the embodiment of evil, but rather as God's "prosecutor."  His image descends from the depictions of the Greek god Pan - cloven hooves, horns, tail. He is simply a mismash of different influences.
