The Mysterious Kvens

From Europe’s oldest historic sources we find "The Arctic Treasures" mentioned; like tar, seal-oil, skins of fur and leather, arctic ivory, hunter-falcons, etc. In earlier times these goods - mainly produced in the Barents region - where highly regarded in Southern Europe and Asia. Thus the arctic where seen as rich and resourceful and at the crossroads of our waterways there must have been a highly organized net of production, transport and trade. In the middle of this "inter-continental" network we find a 10.000 year old culture of arctic production and trade called "Kvens" or "Kainuulaiset".

Related to the ancient Amazones as well as Hyperborea, the mythic origin of the Kven-people continues to puzzle historians. The present publications of Dr. Felice Vince describe how Homers prose relates to an ancient civilization in Scandinavia, contemporary to ancient Greece - that relates directly to the ancient Kven-culture.

The present traces from the hartland of this culture may still be found in the area called "Kainuu", where the mythical Kvens aare suppoed to have had their heartland. In the middle of Kainuu - the land of the Kvens - we till find the castle-ruins supposed be a reminiscence of the legendary Kvens.
