Howard was very familiar with the Mythologies/folklore of europe he portrayed the Picts as the last surviving remnants of the Atlantean race, This is cleary demonstrated in his Books about Bran Mak Morn in one story His mythological Atlantean King, King Kull comes back(forward in time) to help them defeat the Vikings and Roman Legions.

Howard's cosmology is as complete and fascination as other great pulp Authors like HP Lovecraft and could even be comparable in its complexity to those of later authors like Tolkein or Herbert.
