Where were the Pillars of Hercules?

Has it been defined ultimately that the "pillars" were even erected, and not a natural formation?

I don't recall any mention of either being stated firmly as fact, but my memory isn't the greatest these days.  It could have been either.

Given that they are said to be all over the place, maybe it makes sense that they are/were all natural formations....

Dark 30 - Google Hercules and see what you come up with.

The Pillars as Markers - I agree that they could be natural markers that REPRESENT something.  Like a change from one country to the next, a border, a demarcation that says "past this is unknown" or whatever.  But for a natural formation to be CALLED the Pillars of Hercules, they must obviously, look like something Hercules had erected in the first place.  When I first tipped my toes into this deep water we call Atlantology  I was pretty light and laid back about it, and I mentioned at AR (to Georgey actually) that even if Hercules was a giant (which he wasn't) that business about the Pillars being his legs was pretty much over the top, since the two sides of Gibrlater are about 14 miles apart.  I mean, the myths were based in SOME reality and to me, it's easier to see the correlation to Hercules legs in the narrow Dardenelle passage, than it is at Gibralter.
