Rescue Groups Get An Extra 24 Hours To Apply For Vick Dogs

RICHMOND, Va. -- Rescue groups have one more day to seek fighting dogs seized from NFL quarterback Michael Vick's property in rural Virginia.

Today had been the deadline. But Tom Shaer -- a spokesman for court-appointed guardian Rebecca Huss -- says the deadline has been extended 24 hours because of the federal Veterans Day holiday.

Applications sent through the U.S. Postal Service must be received by tomorrow.

Only established rescue groups can apply to Huss -- an animal law expert -- to place or euthanize 48 pit bulls seized from Vick's Bad Newz Kennels.

Huss -- a law professor at Valparaiso University School of Law -- was appointed by U.S. District Judge Henry Hudson to oversee the dogs, which had been held in shelters in Virginia since April.

Once all applications are received, U.S. Department of Agriculture inspectors will inspect the sites where the dogs would be housed.

Vick and three co-defendants pleaded guilty to a federal dogfighting charge and are to be sentenced before the end of the year. Each faces up to five years in prison.

Vick and his co-defendants still face state charges in Surry County, Virginia.
