Six earthquakes have rocked the Aegean region since the early hours of Friday morning.

Following two earthquakes with magnitudes of 5.3 and 4.5 on the Richter scale, which occurred in the Aegean Sea early in the morning another medium-sized quake shook the region at 9:11 a.m. Boğaziçi University's Kandilli Observatory and Earthquake Research Institute reported six earthquakes had shaken the region since 3:43 a.m.

Further quakes with magnitudes of 3.0 at 5:24 a.m., 3.1 at 6:02 a.m., 4.5 at 9:07 a.m. and 5.2 at 9:11 a.m. followed. The last earthquake had a magnitude of 3.0 and occurred at 9:49 a.m. Reports said there had been 25 earthquakes until Friday afternoon.

Dokuz Eylül University's Earthquake Research and Demonstration Center Director Professor Zafer Akçığ, noting that a large number of earthquakes with magnitudes varying from 1.0 to 4.0 on the Richter scale have struck the Seferihisar region recently, said this pointed to a pending earthquake storm.

Akçığ said the region has been very active thus far and the earthquakes prove this. “Our records prove activity in the Seferihisar region. A large number of earthquakes have struck the district lately. Yet, they were not felt due to the small magnitudes. They all point to an earthquake storm. The faults are discharging energy. There is activity in the Aegean Sea,” he said.
