Much of what is recently uncovered was the connection between Paul's home ground, Tarsus, and this religion, once under a line of kings named Mithridates and, under Mithridates The Great, ruled Galatia, was allied with Syria, and ruled Tarsus among many other Pauline sites. Details already posted HERE.

The belief system of the people under this line of kings were subjects in a kingdom called Pontus, and now one wonders how Pilate came by his prefixed name of Pontius.

When the kingdom of Pontus came under Roman rule, Pontus princes continued to rule locally, giving Caeser his due, as it were. This became so in 63 BC, and under a Roman republic that had to be restored itself from a despot who, thanks to partisan warring, became dictator (Sculla). During the time from 63 BC to Year 0, former Pontus royalty regained positions of privilege in Rome's eyes, and Rome indeed was as ready to adopt Mithriac belief as it was in adopting Greek.

It must now be pointed out that while Christian preachers are quick to point out that no early Christians ever owned slaves, it's remarkable that Paul is the exception.
