But what will America and the world get out of it, and what exactly do they deserve? That is often more important in judging an outcome than the favored or unfavored planets of the contestants. Indeed, the charts of nations are traditionally the most important factor, and only after that their leaders, as the order works from the top down. After all, the coming transit of Pluto to the USA Ascendant was so debilitating in 2000 that the country didn’t get the president elected by the majority, then got devastatingly attacked, and subsequently became burdened with war and debt beyond all reason or expectation. No look at the charts of either Bush or Gore would have told you that — although Democrats might say that under such afflictions the worst man would win against all odds, including actual election numbers.

So what’s coming up for the country, regardless of the election? The dark days it has been through are not yet over, but the worst of it may have passed. Leaving the U.S. To crawl out of a hole dug by unwise leadership (and equally blind followership). This will take some time, as after a short-term hopeful change we head toward a decade of progressed Moon running a slow race with transiting Saturn, which may be a hard slog, but it will be mostly over by the time of the country’s first Pluto return in 2022.

In the shorter term, Neptune will be on the national Moon for most of the next president’s first term, and then both Uranus and Neptune will have changed signs by the next four-year term which, with Pluto by then having sunk its teeth into Capricorn, will mean a whole new ballgame. What people will only be hoping for and believing in this election cycle will turn into all bets laid out and cards face up on the table by the time much-vaunted 2012 rolls around. And you thought this one was exciting…

And, landslide or no, between the cup and the lip there are plenty of opportunities for a slip between now and the inauguration.

July 10th sees the Mars-Saturn conjunction, this time in Virgo — the last one signaled the breakout of war in Lebanon, and if the last Mars-Uranus conjunction over the Middle East is true to form, that’s the region where it will happen again.

The skies over the Democratic convention are a disaster, so expect some gratuitous conflict there, even if all seems to be settled in that most contentious of parties.

And, the Moon is void-of-course most of Election Day, a situation that makes for unexpected results and rollups.

And, the Moon is also VOC in its last degree at the moment of swearing-in on Inauguration Day, when Mercury is retrograde and is not just conjunct the Sun, or even combust, but Cazimi (within the actual orb of the Sun’s width, another indication of extremity).

And, last but certainly not least, there is one final, ominous, Pluto-led scythe in the sky right after that, echoing the last, bloody blasts of 1972 in Vietnam before U.S. withdrawal.

Throughout the election season and after, there will be plenty of excitement every time you turn on
the news…

OBAMA & the LEO SOLAR ECLIPSE; AUGUST 1. 2008

“Eclipses in Leo portend death or misfortune for royalty, nobility and 'persons of quality'; the ruination and destruction of ancient buildings, palaces and churches; division amongst the clergy, the besieging of towns, and a scarcity of horses and grain.”

August 1: Solar eclipse in Leo

Leo is known for being quite dramatic, and solar eclipses are also known for their emotional intensity. With the solar eclipse occurring in Leo, expect bold headlines and plenty of 'breaking news.' All eclipses occur at a new Moon, making this a time of fresh beginnings -- and this is truly an important event. Pay attention to your environment and the people in it. The word 'eclipse' means that something dramatic or attention-getting has occurred, captivating our attention enough to pull it away from something -- or someone -- else. Knowing where this eclipse lands in your own chart and what, if any, planets are contacted will give you information about an important focus of your life -- an area that deserves your attention.

August 16: Lunar eclipse in Aquarius

Lunar eclipses are dramatic visually -- and they portend dramatic earthly events as well! This current eclipse in independent Aquarius is no exception. Eclipses are highlighters and bring awareness to what needs your attention. Dynamic aspect patterns are present in this eclipse including this week's Sun/Neptune opposition and the Mars/Pluto square. Also incorporated is an explain-yourself Saturn/Mercury conjunction. Watch what you say because somebody takes the gloves off in the midst of a rather confusing situation. Luckily, next week's Sun trine Pluto suggests that somebody will step forward in a good way and take control. Maybe it'll be you!

On Friday, August 1. 2008 at 6:13 am EDT, there will be a total eclipse of the Sun in the astrological sign of Leo. Solar Eclipses also contain the New Moon of the same sign. The bookend Eclipse to this Solar occurrence is the partial Lunar Eclipse in Aquarius, August 16, 2008. Presidential hopeful, Sen. Barack Obama’s Sun sign is also in the sign Leo and his birthday is August 4, 1961. He also has a stellium, 3 or more planets, in Leo. They are Mercury, Uranus and of course the Sun. The Solar Eclipse on August 1st 2008 will be in the middle of a crucial time for everyone. This pivot point, the core, the central hub of activity from where things begin to finally move. The focus of the world’s attention intensifies. Will this eclipse bring evil or good, beginnings or endings, sorrows or joy? The proximity of Obama’s birthday to this Solar Eclipse, three days away, will magnify its energy one hundred fold.

A Solar Eclipse in Leo is defined by Nostradamus and refers to it as a great astrological event that warns of violence and brutality before and after the eclipse in the “sign of Kings.” Leo is the Kingly Lion! These events bring resignations, deaths of persons, place or things, Stock Market woes, wars and scandal. Eclipses, because of their sudden eruptions and spectacular events that take place, and especially during a Solar Eclipse, this particular signpost is the most singularly striking alignment between then and the Inaugural. Inauguration Day, January 20. 2009, will be 6 days before the next (Aquarius) Solar Eclipse and Election Day ’08, November 4, 2008 has no eclipses near to it. Two other quick observations are that Election Day’s Sun will be in H. Clinton’s natal Scorpio Sun and her Scorpio Mercury. But however, Obama’s natal Aquarius Jupiter will begin transiting a few days after the Inauguration.

Will Obama finally shed Sen. Hillary Clinton as his opponent or will she eclipse him as the nominee? This Solar Eclipse of August 1, 2008, is the total blockage of the Leo Sun by the Leo New Moon. The full Leo New Moon will come exactly in-between the Earth and the Leo Sun and darken the Leo light’s presence. Like the window shade being pulled down over the once, brilliantly over powering light and preventing that Sun from shining on us. But it seems too, that it could resemble a halo effect with streams of light, circumferences a black hole, omen of despair. The dark Sun seemingly squirts out from behind the shadowed Lunar disk, like a silver lining on a dark cloud. On the flip side, this may also mean a “Black King, “ the Black President or it just may mean as eclipses usually do a good ol’ fashioned American sex scandal. Bill Clinton and Barack Obama, both Leos, may have something else in common besides politics and birth signs? But whatever the case, the Eclipse will bring drama and definite “Change!” A Solar Eclipse in Leo is the worst defeats the Sun can suffer, what are the circumstances in which this outcome renders with in this defeat or “death?” Sen. Clinton also has a stellium of natal Leo planets too, but not the Sun! Another possible defeat for Obama could be that near the August 1 Eclipse, Republican Sen. John McCain could chooses Secretary of State Condoleezza Rice as his Vice Presidential running mate, although she doesn’t want to consider it now, but it could happen. This would change the whole dynamic of the Presidential race if there were a McCain/Rice ticket, and causality as it may, move the Democrats to switch their strategy and replace Obama as the possible nominee. Replacing him with Sen. Clinton. Obama can be eclipsed if Condi enters “stage left.” Condoleezza could very well be the shadowed Lunar influence of the August 1, Solar Eclipse. Women naturally, are representative of the Moon’s astrological and female influence. Hillary too, her three Leo natal planets, Saturn, Pluto and Mars, combined with the female eclipsing Lunar force, may block Obama’s path. Obama’s over confidence may turn out to be his down fall as we have witnessed the chipping away with his pastor, Rev. Wright and a former political financer, the indicted Antonin “Tony the slumlord” Rezko. But according to "Chicago lawyers," Barack Obama could very well have to testify, as a defense witness in Rezko’s trial. Boy would that feed the eclipse. Interestingly enough, also, FOX News.com has just reported that Rev. Wright is building a ten million dollar mansion with church funds; I thought he denounced greed, one of the seven deadly sins! Ah yes, religious hypocrisy. - Stay Tuned!

Back on track, the Solar Eclipse in Leo’s effects worldwide, are significant disruptive effects on the people and nations concerned, economic (in the U.S., stock market problems due to gas prices and the foreclosure mess), political crises and civil unrest. Solar Eclipses also seem to either trigger, or amplify, natural events in the regions they affect (e.g., severe weather, earthquakes). Whether this effect is an astrological one or not, is a moot point.

“There is still another side to Obama’s Solar Return Eclipse after the August 1, 2008 eclipse, however, which some astrologers have already suggested. Alluding to a previous eclipse on 22 Feb. ’08 with this comment about Obama’s possible fate, “that it seems there have been instances of large numbers of people not being screened by the police for weapons when they come to Obama’s rallies, that this is deliberate, and may have been ordered by higher authorities. His Solar Return, with that Angular Moon/Mars-Uranus-Pluto t-square, also points to extreme danger to his life from violent attack from August onwards.” This is disturbing indeed!

In addition to Obama’s Sun sign, he also has two other Leo natal planets. He has the natal, mentioned before Sun, Uranus, as well Mercury in this stelliam of Leo planets. Presidential hopeful Sen. Hillary Clinton again, also has some natal Leo planets as well, but NOT a natal Sun. Her natal Leo planets are Mars, Saturn and Pluto. She has a natal Scorpio Sun, Venus and retrograding Mercury. Which brings up the Election Day, ’08, November 4th, once again. Election Day has the Sun in Scorpio, Mercury in Scorpio and Mars in Scorpio. Interestingly enough too, is that Republican Presidential hopeful, Sen. John McCain has the natal Mars in Leo, same as Sen. Clintons. If Condoleezza Rice is McCain’s running mate her Scorpio stellium of the Sun, Venus, Saturn and Mercury all in Scorpio may strengthen McCain’s position considerably.

But to Leo the Lion, it also represents the archetype of the child, the king or queen, the artist and performer. Fiery and dramatic, Leo’s creative energy inspires us to take the risk of expressing our inner truth. The part of the body ruled by Leo is the heart, and when we express ourselves with love, we are giving our greatest gift. Ruled by the Sun, the heart of the solar system, Leo shines brightly, but not in a Leo Solar Eclipse.

However, the Solar Eclipse in Leo on August 1st, three days from his birthday, invites us to plant seeds for the unfolding of our creativity, for stepping into leadership, and for pursuing our heart’s desire. In Obama’s Leo birth chart holds the key to specifics about where these seeds are being planted for him and us. And one last impression; his lit birthday cake with bright candles in surrounding glory, like the Solar Eclipse imagery with the ring of light can only truly mean that his birthday wishes come true!

The Obama camp finally released his birth certificate in response to claims from the political fringe that he was born in Kenya, and therefore ineligible to run for president. For the astrological community, the search for his accurate birth time is over, and is now known.

Obama's official birth time is 7:24 pm

Obama's Neptune in Scorpio is precisely conjunct the JFK assassination chart’s Neptune. And in Obama’s 8th House, ruling death, taxes, insurance, he has Pluto and Mars conjunct Virgo. This conjunction suggests danger to the individual in crowds and in war situations. Pluto in the 8th House in stress aspects may suggest danger to the life of the idividual, or someone of consequence to that individual may die. In his past, Obama's mother died young.

Its has just been reported that the 2008 Democratic National Convention (Aug. 25. - Aug. 28) at the Pepsi Center in Denver Colorado this summer, will be supplied with “hundreds” more FBI Agents. Well, God forbid if anything happens there! The convention is very near the rear bookend of the full Aquarius moon and Lunar Eclipse. Then if there is a problem, we might be CHANGING more than just a slogan.

Jesse, Bernie Mac & the Eclipse Countdown

Rev. Jackson's crude comment about "cutting off Obama's n***s because Barack talks down to blacks was heard on TV by millions. But ironically it's Jesse's who will meet the castration cleaver!

Unfortunatley Obama's campaign is turning into a 3-ringed circus.

He has too many clowns bringing him twisted ballon dogs . With the Leo Solar Eclipse only days away and the Aquarius Lunar on the horizon, presidential campaigns are a blood-sport and the gloves aren't even off yet.

Rev. Wright, Father Pfleger and now Jesse, who's next?

Bernie Mac

Well as soon as I posted the above paragraph another "twisted balloom dog" popped in our face! The comedian Bernie Mac was doing "standup" in Chicago a few days ago and made some off-color remarks about Obama in his routine ........Oh Jeeeeeeeez! Take a look.

RAYMOND MERRIMAN'S

                                               ELECTION COLUMN - continued

In the last several weeks, I have written about the correlation of planetary and rhythmic long-term cycles to the platforms of the two USA Presidential candidates.

As illustrated, there are valid studies to support the presidency of both candidates, from cycles related to the economy, value of the U.S. Dollar, interest rates, taxes, the stock market, and threat of war. Now I would like to analyze it from a purely classical astrological point of view.

First, I would once again like to point out the excellent book on “Political Astrology” by Michael O’Reilly (2005, WingSpan Press, Livermore, CA, USA), wherein he writes about the Mars Factor in U.S. Presidents. Ten of the 42 U.S. Presidents have had their natal Mars in Leo, far more than any other planet-sign combination. John McCain has this position, where as Barack Obama has Mars in Virgo, a placement that had had an “average” rate of frequency of five historical cases, including current President George W. Bush. One would have to give this advantage to John McCain.

The next consideration has to do with the chart of Election Day.

The election begins at 12:01 am, November 4, in Dixville, New Hampshire. At that moment, the Moon is in Capricorn, conjunct Jupiter. As written in the “Forecasts for 2008” book, written in November 2007, long before Obama was considered a serious contender.

To quote the book,

‘… the Moon/Jupiter conjunction trine/sextiles the Election Saturn/Uranus opposition, not the U.S. Saturn or Uranus. The people want somebody who is an outsider to the Washington political establishment, but they also wish a conservative element, someone who gives the appearance of being in control, an authority that can command the respect of others. It may indicate the older candidate wins, if there is a substantial age difference. They do not vote for a total banishment of the “old guard.”

They demand change, but they still vote conservatively on Election Day. That the nation is conflicted about the War in Iraq and the threat of other possible military campaigns is also shown by Mars in Scorpio (the “hawks”) in square aspect to Neptune (the “doves”).” The Moon in Capricorn not only represents the older candidate, but the one with more experience in the minds of voters, who tend to be in a more conservative mood than a risk-taking one. Once again, I would give the astrological edge here to McCain.

I also pointed out that the transits on the day of the New Hampshire primary in early February were very similar to those of Election Day. Most notably, the Moon and Jupiter were conjunct again in Capricorn, nearby to their positions on November 4, 2008. My comment at the time was that the one of the victors of this primary would also be the likely winner of the November 2008 election. Readers may remember that this primary was one week after the Iowa primary, which was won by Michael Huckabee and Barack Obama. They were favored to repeat in New Hampshire. However, to the surprise of many, neither won.

Then winners of New Hampshire were Hillary Clinton and John McCain. Only McCain is still standing.

Or is he the only one still standing?

There is now the matter of selecting a vice-president. Interestingly enough, Hillary Clinton could be Obama’s running mate and she too not only

1) won New Hampshire, but also is

2) perceived to be a candidate with experience, and hence indicative of Moon in Capricorn, and

3) she has natal Mars in Leo, the highest correlation of planetary studies to U.S. presidents.

Yes, I know this is only for the post of vice-president, but she is a Scorpio, and this is a two-year period when the powerful 45-year Saturn-Uranus opposition occurs, so unexpected things can happen.

Of course, this major geocosmic signature can affect John McCain and his running mate too.
Both Rudy Giulani and Mike Huckabee also have Mars in Leo. Mitt Romney has Mars in Pisces, a placement that no prior U.S. President has had.

According to these purely astrological studies, Obama’s best chance of winning the presidency may lie with the choice of Hillary Clinton as his running mate, assuming she would accept such an invitation.

As a result, we anxiously await the Democratic convention later this month to see if these astrological considerations, which I place great importance upon, will move from a strongly biased McCain election victory to one that will put the contest back into a more balanced astrological duel.

                                     INAUGURATION OF PRESIDENT BARACK OBAMA

A new era for the United States of America began on 20th January 2009 when Barack Obama was sworn in as America's forty-fourth president. In keeping with his Aquarius-rising spirit President Obama promised to meet the demands of a New Age and to right the wrongs of the previous administration.

Barack Obama Inauguration

This articulate, sometimes eloquent, president (moon in Gemini trine Jupiter in Aquarius and sextile Mercury in Leo) described the times as those of 'gathering clouds and raging storms', in so doing echoing Winston Churchill's famous words during World War II. He urged Americans to rebuild their shattered spirit and chided them for 'our collective inability to make hard choices'. And however charming and measured his manner no one should doubt the fierce resolve of a man with seven planets and points in Fixed signs.

The day was joyous and reminiscent of a Royal Wedding, but not quite a Coronation, and it was hard not to believe that the US was not on its way back to former glory. (Apologies for the double negative.) Yet one glance at the chart of that moment - 12hrs 05 on a freezing Capitol Hill - throws some doubt on the effectiveness of this administration and the fulfilment of these early promises.

For a start, the swearing of the oath was flubbed: Obama came in too early then the Chief Justice, John Roberts, put the word faithfully in the wrong place causing the almost- president to fluff his response. The result of this Mercury-retrograde blip was a second oath-taking (this time sans bible) the following day at 19hrs 35 in the privacy of The White House.

Astrologers will always have to bear both these charts in mind, although I am sure virtually all of us will feel the horoscope of the 20th carries more weight.

Mercury is, of course, retrograde but this serves a useful purpose in that this administration has a brief to 'restore the trust between the people and its government' and 'return to the old truths... and launch a new era of responsibility'.

Also, Mercury is precisely conjunct the sun, which is in turn conjunct Jupiter - a very fortunate and protective aspect, guaranteeing more than a degree of success and certainly a restored image in the eyes of the world. Plus, this triple conjunction falls on Obama's natal Jupiter; in other words, he became President of the United States on his Jupiter return - a most impressive omen.

But it's not the retrograde Mercury that is at issue in this chart, this moment in time, it is the void-of-course moon.

USA,
July 4 1776 Philadelphia, PA
5 10 pm LMT

When the moon can make no further aspects to any planet or point in a horoscope before it changes sign it reveals a lack of integration and may deny all manner of otherwise positive influences in a chart. At best Obama may keep running into roadblocks when he tries to put major, even minor, strategies in motion but at worst he may not complete his term of office. To add to the complexity, the moon falls on the all-critical 29th degree of Scorpio. Nonetheless, these signs of incompleteness are offset to a degree by Obama's natal Mid-heaven at 28° Scorpio - an indication, perhaps, that his heart and soul are in this presidency and his finger will be on every button, so to speak.

As we might imagine, the Plutonic theme of regeneration and retribution is strong in this inauguration chart: The Mid-heaven at 27° Capricorn is the USA's Pluto, the moon in the Pluto-ruled sign of Scorpio sextiles that Mid-heaven and Pluto at 1° Capricorn falls in its natural house, the eighth, and is in turn opposing the president's natal Venus. Thus, a huge amount of restoration and transformation will take place in the coming weeks and months and those who have erred will be held accountable for their crimes, whether they be generals, attorney-generals or even presidents and vice-presidents... I believe also that despite Obama's open-handed attitude to the Arab world he'll take up arms against an enemy that shows its hand. 'There is no choice between the nation's safety and its ideals...' [The doubters] '... have forgotten what this country has already done, what free men and women can achieve when imagination is joined to common purpose and necessity to courage.'

The spirit of the day was somewhat marred by Senator Edward Kennedy's collapse during the ceremony. Fortunately, it turned out his seizure was a result of fatigue but nonetheless synchronicities cannot be ignored: this administration will not be without its upsets and controversies. Here we may need to cite the proximity of Venus (the chart ruler) to the Uranus-Saturn opposition. This difficult aspect is the main signatory on the global economic downturn, which I recognize is an understatement, and it may turn out to be Obama's Waterloo. Just how well his policies work in restoring faith in banks and within the banking world remains to be seen, and sooner than we might think. His phrase, this winter of our hardship, can be summed up in this one aspect.

The ascending degree of the first oath-taking, 15 Taurus, does not figure significantly in the US chart or that of Obama, but it produces an interesting image as far as the Sabian Symbols go: An old man is attempting with a degree of success unsuspected by him to reveal the mysteries to a motley group. Perhaps this image reinforces the idea that Obama in the pursuit of restoring 'old truths' and real values will succeed, and that the stated intention of this administration to make government more transparent will turn out to be its hallmark. (And who might that motley group be? Congress?) On the other hand, if we look at the Sabian symbol for the second oath-taking ceremony - 1° Virgo: A man's head is revealed; it is a portrait in which the artist has sought to idealize the best of human character - this provides hope that we do indeed have the best of men in President Obama.

Barack Obama 2nd Inauguration
21 January 2009, 19hrs 35, Washington, DC

The horoscope of the second swearing-in is far less powerful, however. We lose the brilliant triple conjunction on the Mid-heaven and find it tucked away in the service-oriented sixth house. The sole angular planet becomes Neptune - on the Ascendant-Descendant axis - which does reflect the promotion of ideals and God calling on the American people to shape an uncertain destiny but it also produces an aura of loss and lack of direction. There is a gain in the fact that the moon is no longer void-of-course and placed in optimistic, generous-spirited Sagittarius but at 15° of the sign it forms the apex of a 'T-square' involving Venus and the Uranus-Saturn opposition, thus the winter of hardship becomes ever more icy and the likelihood of crises of one description or another ever more imminent and recurrent.

Nevertheless, Obama is the Great White Hope (no pun intended) for the American people. He has taken office at a time when the country is at its lowest ebb, a time when the US has fallen so low under the gaze of the rest of the world that it needs the equivalent of a crash-cart and a team of first rate physicians to resurrect it.

And I have hope in Obama, even though these charts provide little foundation for it.

Maybe in time to come I will see my reservations reduced to mere dots on a page and Obama will march victoriously through two terms of office. I have to believe in the triumph of hope over horoscopes.

Just how well his policies work in restoring faith in banks and within the banking world remains to be seen, and sooner than we might think. His phrase, this winter of our hardship, can be summed up in this one aspect.

But we're not quite finished with the Saturn-Uranus opposition...

This inauguration chart is dominated by a Kite formation - a powerful pattern generated by a Grand Trine (Ascendant trine trine ) and an opposition (Saturn versus Uranus and Venus) - these latter planets sextiling, on the one hand, and the Ascendant on the other.

A Grand Trine lends a certain grace and harmony to the chart, something we can already see in the speed and ease with which Obama is setting in motion his reformation, while the spiky opposition adds grit and adversity to the mix. Indeed it is the the very challenge of this opposition that releases the good fortune inherent in the Grand Trine. [There is no limit to] '... what free men and women can achieve when imagination is joined to common purpose and necessity to courage.'
