                                               California's Wildfires

Vedic astrologers have noted that California's wildfires began precisely as transiting Saturn was conjunct the fateful South Node of the Moon, located at 5º Virgo. The problem with this kind of description is that it has no context. Why would California be singled out for this calamity, and why did nothing happen the last time transiting Saturn was conjunct the South Node in 1985? And why fire?

California's horoscope (September 9, 1850; noon; San Jose, CA) provides the context the astrologer needs. The transiting Saturn-South Node conjunction was perfectly aligned with California's Neptune-Chiron square. If one uses a 9:41 am birth time, as rectified by Mark Penfield,* then Neptune is placed in the Fourth House of home and property, while Chiron is in the Second of financial assets. The amount of property loss (in the billions) is perfectly described by this astrological complex.

Fire is associated with the red planet Mars. As the fires raged, transiting Mars was squaring California's natal Mars. Also, using a 9:41 am chart shows that by secondary progression, Mars is squaring the Scorpio Ascendant. In terms of crisis, Uranus opposite California's Sun accurately portrays the challenge to Governor Schwarzenegger and the national attention that this dramatic news story would receive.

A major influence in California's chart is the epochal Uranus-Pluto conjunction in the last degree of Aries. This rare outer planet conjunction corresponds to widespread cultural, political and social upheaval, as the 1848-1855 California Gold Rush depicted. California was the natural setting for similar social revolutions during the following Uranus-Pluto conjunction in the 1960s. Consequently, astrologers might expect that California will be a leading indicator for the kinds of trouble that the Uranus-Pluto square of 2012 will bring.

by Maya del Mar

[Ed Note: because of the tremendous importance and scale of the social and physical transformations occurring now, Maya is rerunning April's article "The Road to 2012" with added introductory comments.]

The world is heating up in a number of ways. Physically, the climate is warming at a rapid rate—faster than the computer models predicted, and faster than anyone expected. There is a real urgency to stop using fossil fuels—“ancient sunlight,” as Thom Hartman calls them.

Socially, people are no longer willing to obey the traditional hierarchical orders of society—often backed up with a gun. Those old hierarchies are crumbling everywhere. Notable is a gathering of 2.5. million protestors in Mexico City on July 30, many of them with tents, and ready to camp out in the streets until there is a complete vote recount. Talk about a sit-in!

Battles are quickly heating up between the old and the new, between the outworn past, and growing ideas of self-determination and social justice.

We are undergoing an enormous transition, and people are caught in the middle of it. The past survives only in ghostly forms. “Suits” are an example. Look at the symbols of status and authority, and you can see right through them. Sometimes the justice system helps us to do just that, as they did with Enron and with Tom Delay.

The value of the dollar, another illusion of power, is decreasing rapidly. It seems to be kept viable only by wars, and their prodigious use of weapons.

We have not yet established our new world, and the world in which most of us live is crumbling. The transition process is chaotic, confusing, and for too many, tragic and deadly. We are entering the dark tunnel of transformation, which includes catharsis, death, and rebirth.

It IS very frightening.

But it is also an opportunity to hold the light, to develop courage, strength, and compassion, and to take actions to help midwife a better world. Perhaps our main work is to be aware, and to remember that every decision we make during the day has a context. Remembering is difficult! It takes practice.

THE PLAYERS…

We are in the midst of great social change, and it’s time to review coming planetary highlights.

The three outer slow-moving planets form the backdrop for these times. These planets are Pluto, Neptune, and Uranus. They are the energies which correspond with deep changes in consciousness, and major social change. They are makers of history.

Pluto, for example, has a 250-year orbit, which means it energizes any given degree of the zodiac only once every 250 years. Think of a Pluto cycle starting on any given degree of the 360-degree zodiac. 250 times 360 means that it takes at least 90,000 years to complete Pluto’s cycles through the zodiac. I call Pluto the Lord of Evolution. Birth and death are his realms.

In addition, the combination of the cycles of the three outer planets is always different. We can see that the outer planets take us into new spaces and unknown places.

These outer planets are in a special space right now. Since Pluto entered Sagittarius (the sign of religion) in 1996, all three of the outer planets are traveling through universal signs. These are the last four signs of the zodiac—Sagittarius, Capricorn, Aquarius, and Pisces—and they are connected with the wider society, e.g. with universal ideas, the zeitgeist, climate and earth changes, inventions, and movements which affect society at large.

An example of their work is the Pluto-Uranus conjunction which occurred during the 1960’s. Here we see Pluto, the Transformer, joined with Uranus, who breaks the bonds of conventional paradigms. A social revolution was born then.

And so was its reaction. Entrenched interests, fearful for their survival, strengthened their grip. This struggle has been intensifying during these turbulent decades—the 70’s, the 80’s,the 90’s, and now the 00’s.

Pluto transforms and regenerates. Crisis, destruction, and new life are its purview. It works with extremes, and carries things to their limits, which may be annihilation if necessary.

Neptune universalizes. It connects us all so that we can understand that we are all one—the Family of Humankind. It is connected with the rhythms of nature and of the universe. Neptune rules oil, which connects our time to a time of ancient forests. As Tom Hartmann says, when we use oil, we are using Ancient Sunlight.

Uranus is the Enlightener. With it we connect to sudden flashes of brilliance and insight. We open to new ideas and inventions, often in an explosive way. Uranus can decisively separate us from the past, as it thrusts us into new paradigms.

This combination—three planets which take us into new spaces plus four signs which give those energies universal distribution—sets the stage for… big-time world-wide CHANGE.

We have another Joker in the pack. In the U.S. chart, progressed Mars is now turning retrograde for the first time in U.S. history. This denotes a major change in how the U.S. uses its energy. The progression lasts about 80 years, and it is a time of review.

How can we deal with this great mass of uncertainty? Clues are offered by the Wheel of Fortune Tarot card, where fortune is found by exercising the qualities of objectivity, creativity, and flexibility.

And, as always, we need to remain centered in our own integrity, follow the guidance of our hearts, and know that spirit is always working with us.

THE ACTION…

What happens in this outer planetary pantheon between now and 2012, when the Earth’s Solstices match up with the Galactic Center? This is prophesized by many to be a time of huge change. The Aztecs and Mayans, for instance, have said that we end one world and begin another.

Perhaps most significantly, many of the planets, including Pluto and Uranus, enter cardinal signs in the next few years.

Why is this significant?

Cardinal signs are where we begin things. They are the four signs which begin the four seasons: Aries-Spring, Cancer-Summer, Libra-Autumn, and Capricorn-Winter. Planets in cardinal signs move full speed ahead towards their goals. “Action” is the key word for cardinal planets.

Furthermore, each of the cardinal signs is square or opposite to each of the others. There is built-in stress and challenge amongst them.

We have just seen that the outer planets in the universal signs are stirring things around, creating chaos, and setting the stage for major new social developments. Now comes the cardinal energy to set new things in motion—but not without conflict, for cardinal squares are coming up. Both square formations and cardinal signs are in themselves pushy, and the combination—particularly with outer planets—means grand clashes.

In addition, we will have particularly significant eclipses occurring from 2008 through 2011. Eclipses are potent catalysts for change.

THE TIMING…
January 2008. Powerhouse Pluto begins the cardinal parade by entering Capricorn, which is both a universal and cardinal sign, thus starting a new mode of power for the world. Capricorn is a business-government sign, and it is the sign of the U.S. Pluto. This placement shows U.S. power in the world. An immature Pluto can be heavy-handed, ruthless, and dictatorial. Pluto is slow-moving, and remains in Capricorn through 2024.

February 2008. We begin the Aquarius-Leo eclipses, which last through 2009. These eclipses activate the Great Solar Eclipse of August 1999, whose notes will reverberate for centuries. This first one conjoins my Sun, on my 80th birthday! Exciting!)

November 2009. Saturn enters Libra. Saturn is about structure, and firm grounding. It is particularly associated with government and with authority. Saturn moves ahead quickly, and will square Pluto from November 2009 through June 2010. Government will meet active challenges during that period. A Saturn-Pluto square in January 1994 accompanied the imposition of NAFTA and the Zapatista uprising.

May 2010. Uranus enters Aries. Here we have innovative energy entering the first sign of the zodiac. The urge to birth new movements and new ideas is now irresistible. Furthermore, Uranus has an incredibly long square with Pluto, from 2011 through 2015. This is the big transformational period of the 21st century.

June 2010. Jupiter enters Aries. Jupiter works with Saturn to grease the normal wheels of society. It is in each sign only one year, and expands whatever it touches. Jupiter will oppose Saturn in August of 2010, indicating social struggle between opposing forces. This occurs at the same time that Saturn and Pluto are squaring one another. Aries, Libra, and Capricorn are all now occupied by major planets, in stressful square to one another. Fireworks!

2010-2012. Eclipses in the Cancer-Capricorn polarity. This is the major polarity in the U.S. chart, and this eclipse season (about every nine years) is always associated with big events in the U.S.

July 2011-April 2015. This is an amazing period. Freedom-loving Uranus in Aries squares (i.e., fights) powerhouse, control-freak Pluto in Capricorn. During this entire period, they are in close orb, and they square exactly eight times. Exact squares are like lighting matches. Normally two planets square one another, at most, over a period of 18 months. This length of time, four years, is extraordinary. It portends a long period of deep social struggle, and major consciousness change. This is the breakthrough time of the revolution begun with the Uranus-Pluto conjunction in the 60’s. During this period, the seeds planted in the 60’s can break through to expression. Those people born during the 60’s will have special parts to play.

Dates of exact squares between Uranus and Pluto:

July 2011
June 2012
July 2012
May-June 2013
October-November 2013
April 2014
November-December 2014
January-February 2015

By 2012 we will indeed have a changed—and changing world.

In October of 2012 Saturn enters the powerful fixed sign of Scorpio. But that’s another story.

As the reader can see, these enormous changes in the world are coming very soon. NOW is the time for us to prepare to participate positively in the dynamic process of evolution—spiritually, mentally, emotionally, and physically. There truly is very little time. We are, in fact, fortunate to live in such an intense period of tremendous challenges, and tremendous opportunities.

This is our chance to create a new and better world.

                                             THE ASSASSINATION OF BENAZIR BHUTTO

Dear Friend and Reader:

YESTERDAY'S assassination of Benazir Bhutto, the beloved former prime minister of Pakistan and candidate in next month's general election, was not merely the martyring of yet another pro-democracy leader. It was not just the murder of a dynamic, articulate and intelligent woman in a region of the world where women are not regarded as people.

Rather, her murder pushes the world closer to a nuclear threshold, one where we get to start making conscious decisions if we want.

Pakistan, often spoken of as a key US ally, is the world's most unstable and arguably most hostile nuclear-armed power. It's the only nuclear-armed Islamic state, which is in an almost constant standoff with India. Many charts from today's event point to the central theme involving a nuclear issue.

As reported in this space recently, we are currently in an extended phase of Aries Point events, described in the Dec. 21 edition of Planet Waves (*). This is a time when the news has profoundly personal implications. Mars is now retrograde in the earliest degrees of Cancer, and had recently opposed Jupiter in Capricorn (these planets directly aspect the Aries Point). We now have a picture of how this is raising issues of world security. It's also opposite Pluto in late Sagittarius, and the Mars-Pluto opposition can be forceful, even fatal, if it is not handled carefully.

There are so many conflicts about the details of what happened Thursday that it's not even clear what any of the salient facts are, except that there was a bomb blast in the vicinity of a Benazir Bhutto rally, and that shots were probably fired. The initial report by the Associated Press said she survived the incident, but a report followed soon after saying she had been killed.

After searching the Internet for hours, scanning about 58 pages of Google news returns, it appears impossible to determine a verifiable time of the shooting if there was one, or for the explosion, or even a death time (I have seen four different ones already). This is in an era when even disposable pens have digital clocks, and involving an incident where reporters for the Associated Press, the BBC and numerous news agency photographers were all eyewitnesses. Remember, digital cameras time stamp every photo. [Getty Images senior staff photographer John Moore, one of the witnesses, has described the scene in some detail in this report, but did not state a time.]

Benazir Bhutto was part of a political dynasty.
Here she is with India's foreign minister in 1972
in Simla, where her father, President Zulfikar
Ali Bhutto, met India's Indira Gandhi.

The most commonly stated death time and the one likely to be recorded in history is 6:16 pm local time, only because it appeared in The New York Times. That is the chart that we have used.

What is clear is that Bhutto, perhaps the most revered woman in the Islamic world, is widely believed to have been assassinated and probably was; that it happened in Pakistan on the afternoon of Dec. 27, 2007; and that it's thrown the most dangerous nuclear-armed state into political and social turmoil.

We also know this is in a region where talk of nuclear war -- with another country, Iran -- has been in the news for well over a year. We know from listening to the rhetoric coming from the White House that the Bush administration has been looking for any excuse at all to go into Iran. It is not difficult to envision a scenario wherein Iran is somehow blamed for this assassination and thus established as a public enemy on a new level. We would be wise to recognize that if we happen to see it.

What is not speculative is that aspects for this day point directly to a chart called the Nuclear Axis. That is the horoscope of the first self-sustaining atomic reaction. [For background, check my coverage of this chart for StarIQ.com.]

To briefly sum up the Nuclear Axis, it's the chart for the first time a nuclear reaction sustained itself in a laboratory. This was accomplished during the experiments that led to the first atomic bomb, as part of something called the Manhattan Project. This chart contains a collection of planets across early-to-mid Gemini and Sagittarius, hence it's referred to as an 'axis'. That chart includes Saturn at 8+ degrees of Gemini, the first of the four mutable signs.

When transiting planets make aspects to that axis (particularly from the mutable signs), there can be serious nuclear consequences. It does not happen every time, but then many very serious events involving nuclear weapons and nuclear power never make the news, being known only to government and industry. However, nuclear incidents happen often enough under transits to this chart that there is a clear pattern. The most significant was when transiting Saturn in Sagittarius made a square to Saturn in the nuclear axis chart. That was the Chernobyl incident in the Ukraine, the worst known nuclear meltdown in history.

When Pluto was on the axis in 1998 -- making an opposition to Saturn -- India and Pakistan engaged in a tit-for-tat series of nuclear tests in their respective countries, effectively plunging the world into a new nuclear arms race.

Benazir Bhutto yesterday,
after she was assassinated,
on the cover of Aljazeera.net.

It is therefore not comforting that today, Saturn was precisely square Saturn in the nuclear axis chart, something that happens every 14 or so years. Joining Saturn were three of the newer planets that together formed what is called a mutable grand cross or grand square -- four planets at 90 degree angles to one another. In other words, Saturn in the Nuclear Axis chart was (and still is) taking transits from four directions, from all of the mutable signs.

The current aspects to Saturn are as precise as the right angles of a bookshelf -- precise to less than one degree. Saturn is a significant planet in the Nuclear Axis chart because it represents solid matter, which was split into energy in order to release the power of the atom. In Gemini, it also stabilizes divisions of opinion and various other polarities. The aspects are as follows:

-- Chaos, a slow-moving planet in our solar system slightly beyond Pluto, is exactly conjunct the Nuclear Axis Saturn in Gemini. Few astrologers use Chaos or have even heard of it, but as a slow-moving planet in the region of Pluto, it's worth paying attention to.

-- Saturn, currently in Virgo, is exactly square Nuclear Axis Saturn. It is opposite Saturn in the Chernobyl chart. Saturn is about structure, government, boundaries and time. In Virgo it represents basic intelligence; square itself, something is at a turning point.

-- Pallas Athene, one of the first asteroids, with many themes involved in politics, is exactly opposite Nuclear Axis Saturn from Pisces. Pallas is about protection, strategy, law and government.

-- Pholus, the second Centaur planet (a planet in Chiron's group), is exactly square Saturn from Sagittarius. The energy of Pholus is like a rapid release of energy. In Sagittarius, we have this placed in a sign whose first keyword is 'international'.

The problem with the nuclear crisis is that we forget that it exists. We forget we were raised in the nuclear shadow, and that the Doomsday Clock is currently set for five minutes till midnight. Perhaps you never saw Dr. Strangelove or The Atomic Cafe and were moved to the point of actually caring about this issue.

It may seem productive to push the nuclear crisis to the backs of our minds, and of our collective awareness. It may be easier to get through the day this way, and nobody will think you're paranoid. But as long as we do that, we cannot work for a solution, nor will we be reminded of the insanity that has put the world where it is: in particular, the belief that the more weapons we have, the safer we will be. The less we think about it, the more likely we are to forget that we have some choice in the matter. The more we deny consciousness, the more intractable the nuclear situation will seem.

We'll be more likely to forget that it was people who made the bomb, and people who are the only ones capable of getting rid of it. The Nuclear Axis does not predict disaster. The future is always different than the past, so at the least, it predicts that the discussion is up for grabs. It is very much up at the moment, and the governments of the world know this. World leaders are staring right at the crisis they know they have created.

Pakistan, 28 May 1998.

Bhutto’s death will take on mythic status, as Neptune, Saturn and the Moon all sit at the top of her natal chart. We are about to witness something the likes of Princess Diana, but Islam-styled. With so many planets in her personal chart in positions of extreme popularity and public resonance, there will be a tremendous outpouring of grief. Pakistanis will see her as a martyr, the ideal and idealized leader that could have led their country into the 21st century with the destruction of extremism and restoration of democracy.

She is gone, but that opportunity is not over. Indeed, it may have just begun. It may seem impossible today as we watch the insanity spiral in the Middle East and the stupidity spiral wildly out of control in Washington, DC. Yet there will come a day when enough people get so sick of the constant horrors that they will stop. Stranger things have happened in the history of this planet, but few will be more welcome.

Until then, we simply must be vigilant. That is another word for aware; awareness is always our choice here. If you need an image to help you visualize how ending the nuclear arms race might begin, let's borrow from Jonathan Schell, who wrote The Fate of the Earth.

The countries would start by disconnecting the warheads from the missiles and leaving on the floor of the silo. Then, eventually, they would move them to a separate building. Then, to a different facility. Eventually, the bomb delivery systems could be dismantled. It would go one step at a time.

As we will see in the next few days as the Aries Point works its strange wonders, a message will come through -- a message that is very likely to make us want to make a conscious choice in the life or death matters of the world we have inherited.

Yours and truly,
 ERIC FRANCIS

Dear Friend and Reader:

A CLUSTER of events the next few days is sending up an Aries Point alert: that is, global events on the horizon. The Sun is about to enter Capricorn for the southern solstice on Dec. 22 (winter solstice, up in the northern hemisphere). Jupiter, the Sun and Mercury are either in Capricorn or will get there within moments, with Pluto right behind. Then the Sun and Moon oppose one another (also called the Full Moon) across early Cancer/Capricorn on Dec. 24.

When a lunation occurs along an axis where there are many planets, it tends to precipitate global activity. Because this particular one occurs near the Aries Point (making a conjunction, square or opposition aspect to the first degree of Aries; in this case, a square or 90 degree angles from Cancer and Cap) the news tends to have a personal feel to it and/or it affects a lot of people. These developments are part of a pattern covered recently in this space.

In any event, the combination of a Full Moon near the solstice will make for a lively holiday environment, full of polarized discussions, intense emotions and of course some histrionics sponsored by those who can't quite keep a grip when the astrology hots up. The Moon is full in a very close conjunction to retrograde Mars in Cancer. For those who never miss an opportunity to overreact, you will be in the right place. As one who follows astrology, you can be mindful of the environment you're in, preparing like one who takes an umbrella when it looks like rain.

All the emphasis on Capricorn is good for what drives the holiday season in the Western world, a sense of obligation and a certain innocence about doing business. Cap is also in many respects the sign of families and things like the "institution" of marriage and of the family. This is some well-deserved support coming our way.

Jupiter in Capricorn could have one of two influences: protection, or magnifying whatever happens. Conceivably it could do both at once. It's never a good idea to make predictions unless it's part of a game, but this alignment is begging for them. The problem with astrology's predictions is they tend to be of two varieties: either the world is going to end, or humanity will suddenly ascend to the 5th dimension and we will all become enlightened.

We need to take a more practical, contemplative view. I propose we seek a future different than the past. Many people take a cynical view of the future, but we don't know what's going to happen this time around. We often forget we make the future, but it's never too late to remember. It's never too early, either.

Keep your antennae up. Pay attention six ways from Sunday, and remember astrology when you're watching the news, or watching yourself.

                                                      PLUTO IN CAPRICORN

2008-2023

Although Pluto is a small planet (in fact, it is now classified as a dwarf planet) it packs a powerful punch. Pluto represents death and endings and the breakdown of the structures in our life that are required in order to bring transformation and fresh beginnings. Pluto brings us face to face with the ultimate reality of life and, watching over us like a shamanic guardian, destroys whatever stands in the way of our soul's ultimate destination.

Pluto's passage through the signs brings with it a compulsive fascination in the issues denoted by that sign. He ruthlessly exposes the darkness that lies at the core of the sign's archetypes and, destroying the old order, demands that we rebuild on the ashes of the old. Like the Phoenix bird with which it is associated, Pluto dies and is regenerated to begin anew.

Pluto has been traveling through Sagittarius since 1995, bringing with it wars (Pluto) over religion and ideology (Sagittarius), as well as "culture wars" and the growing divide between groups that think differently, all Sagittarius archetypes. Sagittarius rules the media and entertainment, and the rise of a new compulsivity in celebrity journalism has grown up since Pluto entered Sagittarius, with the internet spawning a huge new gossip market. Sagittarius carries with it a nearly relentless optimism; ruled by Jupiter with its expansive need for growth, Pluto in Sagittarius has seen soaring home prices and a burgeoning stock market that seems to have no end. The "new economy" of the dot com era occurred under Pluto's Sagittarian influence, as did the explosion of the vacation home market.

Pluto transits typically include a breakdown phase, where structures that no longer serve us are dismantled to make room for new structures that are more in line with our spiritual evolution. I like to think of these periods as course corrections, where our guides or gods decide that certain changes are required. If we understand the process and can surrender to it with trust, this can be an exhilarating time of transformation and empowerment. If we resist and hold on to the past it can be full of tragedy and pain.

Capricorn is the sign of the builder, the achiever. Capricorn is rooted in the material world and understands that life on earth requires a practical approach to the matters of earning a living. There is also a drive for success; to climb the highest mountains like the goat which is it's symbol. For Capricorn, the ends justify the means and achievement of one's goals is the important thing and it is able to maintain a powerful focus.

Its rulership by Saturn gives respect for discipline and authority and Capricorn has tremendous respect for governmental structures and the stability of a moral system. However, Saturn also bestows its tendency towards pessimism and lack of humor as all things personal are sacrificed for the goal. There is often a tendency to prize material things above those of the emotional or spiritual realms, and this lack of balance can create a dry and miserable experience.

When Pluto goes through Capricorn we can expect the transformation of all things ruled by that sign - such as our religious institutions, halls of government and political structures, the way we inter our dead and take care of our old people, construction techniques and buildings, and how we handle ownership of property.

While Pluto takes 244 years to orbit the Sun, its elliptical orbit means that it doesn't spend the same amount of time in each sign. For example, it only took twelve years to travel through Scorpio, but it took 26 years to get through Cancer and 19 years through Leo. Pluto will be in Capricorn until 2024, and this occurs at a time when our Capricornian structures are ripe for transformation. Industry (Capricorn) in developed and developing countries as become a major source of carbon emissions which threaten the survival of life on earth. The Catholic Church (Capricorn), rocked by sex scandals, is struggling for survival. The very way we do business (Capricorn) is being forever changed by the globalization of politics and the economy.

Pluto will be enter Capricorn for the first time January 25, 2008 and will retrograde back into Sagittarius one final time on June 14. It will journey back into Capricorn on November 26, 2008 and remain there until January 21, 2024. For sixteen years, Pluto will engage in a process of breaking down and then rebuilding the structures on which we depend for a successful experience in the material world.

There is a natural evolution to the path of the planets through the zodiacal signs as each sign offers a completely different experience than the sign before. In Sagittarius, Pluto has been compulsively expansive and optimistic, intensifying religious fervor - all qualities of Sagittarius. In Capricorn, Pluto seeks to contract and solidify and build solid structures for society. In the process, the structures that already exist are broken down and irrevocably transformed

Pluto was last in Capricorn from November 1762 until December 1, 1778. Pluto deals with transformation of the political and economic realities of our world, and its entry into Capricorn marked the end of the Seven Years' War in which France ceded Canada to Britain, but political unrest was felt throughout Europe as well as in the Colonies and this period marked a reconfiguration of many of the nations in the world. Catherine the Great acceded to the throne after the murder of her husband, perhaps at her own hand, and presided over wars with the Ottoman Empire that resulted in Russian acquisition of much of the Turkish lands. The first partition in Poland occurred during this period which split Poland into three sections owned by Russia, Prussia and Austria. Britain traded Cuba to Spain in exchange for Florida; Parliament passed the Stamp Act to pay for the wars that began the Colonial rebellion that resulted in the American Revolution.

The thirst for revolution in France, England and Russia of the Pluto in Aquarius period that generated an obsession (Pluto) with liberty and equality (Aquarius) stemmed from a reaction to the breakup and reconfiguration of world nations (Capricorn) that followed the colonial expansion (Sagittarius) that preceded it. Pluto's previous passage through Capricorn back in 1516-1533 c.e. was preceded by the original exploration of the New World that gave rise to the later Colonial ideals. Once the original explorers had returned to the courts of Europe, under Pluto in Capricorn those countries set out to conquer the New World and create new colonies that were subservient to the European rulers. The rise of anti-Catholic sentiment that brought about the rise of Protestants under Pluto in Sagittarius gave way to Martin Luther's formalizing his revolt with his nailing his Thesis to the door of the Church in 1517 under Pluto in Capricorn, founding a new structure of worship, the Lutheran Church.

Although Pluto will enter Capricorn for the first time in January, it will retrograde back into the late degrees in Sagittarius in June 2008 where it will make one final sweep through the Sagittarian issues of religion, philosophy, travel, ideology, journalism, optimism, and general expansion. Throughout 2008 it will be virtually stationary, traveling less than three degrees during this period, from 1 degree Capricorn back through 28 degrees Sagittarius. Because it will be stationary for so long, where its influence is the most powerful, I would expect a great deal of intensity and forced transformation during this period. This will be particularly intense for those of us who have planets in the late degrees of the mutable signs (Virgo, Pisces, Sagittarius, Gemini) or the early degrees of the cardinal signs (Capricorn, Cancer, Aries Libra).

Pluto causes endings and new beginnings - it forces us to surrender as it rebuilds us from the inside out. I suspect that throughout next year the intense optimism of Pluto in Sagittarius will battle with the necessity for realism of Pluto in Capricorn, and it will be a while before the economic problems really hit home. Mars will oppose Pluto in early March, which will create some fireworks of aggression and confrontation, and Saturn will make its second trine to Pluto in April which will ease the challenge of the new requirements of Capricorn Pluto which wants to tear down and rebuild the structures of our life and planet and intensify the power bases that govern society.

Once Pluto is firmly entrenched in Capricorn beginning in December 2008, we will begin to really see it at work. This of course will follow the US presidential election in November 2008. Pluto seeks to focus and intensify as well as break down and regenerate. The structures of our world keep societies in order and functioning: churches, governments, buildings - all of these are ruled by Capricorn. But so are bridges and tunnels, and the entire infrastructure upon which we live, particularly in urban areas, are likely to experience a severe breakdown while Pluto travels through Capricorn. Underground transportation, under the domain of the god of the underworld, could become a battleground as Pluto often brings warfare or death in the areas of the sign through which it passes (such as September 11th during Pluto in Sagittarius, where air travel became a conveyance of death and total world transformation).

During the passage of Pluto, we see extremes and compulsions in the area of life associated with the sign through which Pluto travels, and with the Capricornian association with governments and government buildings I would expect a worldwide attempt to solidify a global government and minimize individual liberties. Pluto deals with issues of power - on a personal level such as personal empowerment as well as with the power structures that govern all of humanity that fall under the rubric of the Capricorn theme. When Uranus enters Aries in 2010-2011, there will be a fervor as the pendulum swings back towards individual liberties. By the time Uranus forms a square to Pluto in Capricorn in 2012-2013 there will be tremendous cultural, social and political upheaval which will further transform governments and political structures.

Pluto's reach will extend beyond governments, however. Capricorn also rules the elderly and end of life issues, and Pluto's passage through Capricorn could transform the way we view the entire process of death and dying, including the disposal of the body after death.

Often Pluto's passage through one sign is a reaction to Pluto's passage through the previous sign, and in Capricorn there may be a reaction of the practical and materialistic Capricorn against the ideological idealism of Pluto's travel through Sagittarius. An overdose of pragmatism could lead to the negativity and depression with which Capricorn is sometimes associated. Capricorn is associated with achievement and can be ruthless in its efforts to climb to the top, and we could see an increased obsession (Pluto) with climbing the ladder of success that leads to a breakdown in certain segments of society.

There is always a side to Pluto cycles, and in Capricorn we are likely to see an increase in stability and a more practical approach to economics and business than we saw under the Sagittarian influence. The inflated (Sag) bonuses for CEOs that we saw in recent years are likely a sign of the past as businesses and corporations become more concerned with Capricornian fundamentals than with Sagittarian appearance and image. Capricorn is essentially practical and prizes achievement above all else, which means achievement of real goals and objectives. Although Pluto in Capricorn will bring out secrets (Pluto) of governments and other political entities (Cap), there will be an increased focus on proficiency, skill, and a successful outcome rather than spin and propaganda of the Sagittarian era.

I don't know about you, but all of that sounds to me like a great improvement and to which I am looking forward!

Astrology 2007: The Best, Biggest, and Most Anticipated

A totally subjective and random look at the wonderful world of astrology in 2007

Biggest astrology trend (a repeat from last year): Astrology blogs. They’ve been growing exponentially. Check out Jeffrey Kishner’s Astrology Blogger Directory, a “comprehensive guide to every Western astrology blog on the web.” By the time you scroll to the bottom of the list, you’ll be in a new time zone, your head spinning in a blissful astro-blogosphere tag cloud. Then check out the blog podcasts and vidcasts. Top Ten Astrology Sources will also keep you happily busy for most of your waking hours.

Second biggest astrology trend: Interest in Mayan cosmology and 2012. Although the apocalypse is what’s simmering in a part of the collective consciousness right now, respected experts in Mayan cosmology are not forecasting any sort of 2012 pre-Columbian rapture. John Major Jenkins’ Maya Cosmogenesis 2012 (which doesn’t really predict an apocalypse and is probably the best of the 2012 books--a fascinating read) has steadily outsold most astrology books on the list of astrology bestsellers. Bruce Scofield’s How to Practice Mayan Astrology has been finding a much wider readership. And there’s been an endless parade of other 2012 books.

Planet of the Year (and probably next year, too): Saturn. When contacted, Saturn merely griped that he could not accept the Planet of the Year award because he was too busy “tightening my rings, sir.” Indeed, Saturn’s coming off the opposition to Neptune, went into Virgo, and recent discoveries indicate that Saturn’s rings are a lot older than previously believed—and thus, perhaps, in need of a little adjusting. Oh well, it’s been a SERIOUS year. Even the comedians have been hard-edged and Comedy Central’s Stewart and Colbert haven’t been doing new shows due to the writer’s strike (although they are scheduled to come back in early January). Pluto’s about to go into Saturn-ruled Capricorn and Saturn’s starting to face off against Uranus. No wonder Saturn’s tightening his rings. He needs to be ready. Damn ready.

Dwarf planet of the year: Ceres. Now that global warming has our full attention, the recently elevated planet Ceres—the goddess of agriculture and seasonal change—is getting a lot of overdue respect. And you gotta love the sub-plot involving a mythic underworld Amber Alert.

Astrology book of the year: Wish I had time to read more books, but there’s been precious little time this year. I’m still trying to catch up with books from several centuries ago. However, my favorite book this year (even though it was published last year) was Venus: Her Cycles, Symbols, and Myths, by Anne Massey. Venus seemed due for a major makeover and Anne Massey masterfully brings her into the 21st Century—yet Venus still maintains an ageless symmetry. A real eye-opener.

Cosmic event of the year: Pluto conjunct the Galactic Center certainly helped to explain a world in transition. For an excellent discussion of this alignment, see Lynn Hayes’ article on her AstroDynamics website.

Most anticipated astrology event that hasn’t happened yet: Tie between 2012—the Mayan calendar end date—and the U.S. election on November 4, 2008. At this point, it is not clear which will be more transformational. Technically, a national election is not an astrology event per se, but this one will coincide with the exact opposition of Saturn and Uranus. Runner-up: Pluto’s entry into Capricorn.

Astrology event most anticipated by me personally: the mid-2007 waning of the Saturn-Neptune opposition. It hit a few of my own planets and I’d just about had it up to here with that alignment, although Neptune kept fogging things up to the point where I could never quite figure out what “it” was.

Least noticed astrology event: The discoveries of other solar systems. The astrology reaction’s generally been like, “Yeah, if I was born on some planet orbiting 47 Ursa Majoris, I might care.” But according to Zane Stein and Debbi Kempton-Smith (authors respectively of A View from Chiron and the irreverent classic Secrets from a Stargazer’s Notebook), these exo-planets might be a lot more potent than we think.

Biggest astrology frustration: The lack of solid birth times for most of the presidential candidates. AKA Looking for Hillary…and Barack…and Mike…and John (at least the one from North Carolina)…and…I realize there are more important issues facing our world today, but hey, if they can answer questions from a snowman on YouTube, the least they can do is have some aide dig up a birth certificate and post it on the candidate’s MySpace page. Inquiring astrologers REALLY want to know.

Best planet, all things considered: Earth. The character of the Stage Manager in Thornton Wilder’s Our Town commented that of all the worlds in the known universe, “Only this one is straining away, straining away all the time to make something of itself.” Hopefully, we can make something better of our own small planet in 2008.

Hillary's Horoscope: Her Comeback Was in the Stars

Posted January 9, 2008

It should come as no surprise that Hillary Clinton came out swinging after her defeat in Iowa.

After all, it was in the stars: she is a Scorpio and Scorpio rules the instinct for survival. Scorpio also rules cockroaches. Did you ever try to spray or drown them? They can hold their breath and play dead until you walk out of the kitchen and turn out the light. Then they scurry away, laughing. Scorpios are loved and hated at the same time. Those who hate Hillary still respect her sheer chutzpah, and those who love her have to put up with the fact that she can be a nightmare to live with, especially if she gets a whiff of betrayal.

Back in the 90s when she was laughed out of Congress, her critics believed she was done for. You have to understand how Scorpios operate, however. And Hillary does operate. She operates like a nuclear-powered paper shredder. The whole Congress-health care fiasco was a disaster, partly because Scorpios do lack subtlety when they have a goal.

They get fixated. They zero in. Hillary can't help it. She's an assertive female.

(That's why Bill married her. He likes to get slapped around once in a while.)

She is not the frilly-I-enjoy-being- a-girl type of woman. She's more like a girl's gym teacher; just fit her out with a whistle and a pair of sneakers and she'd be ready to dribble a basketball. That image makes it easy for her detractors to cast aspersions on her sexuality.

So when she busted into the Senate with six-guns blazing, the Old Boys snickered and thought they could just send her back to the kitchen. Scorpio women are not just women, though.

Hillary backed away. In typical Scorpio fashion, she went into Plan B. Scorpios always have not only Plan B, but they usually have it figured out all the way up to Plan Z.  She probably figured, well, if
she couldn't convince those old buzzards to do what she thought was right, she would just have to
take over the whole shebang.

Many women in the United States were left growling over the Monica Lewinsky affair. They thought that instead of crying right wing conspiracy and standing by her man, she should have tossed Bill out on his royal Leo butt. Not the Scorpio way. When you betray Scorpios, they don't challenge you to a duel at dawn on CBS. They wait.

Hilary won't resort to stuffing penicillin into your toothpaste tube when you're horribly allergic. She's more evolved than that, whose version of revenge is smoother, cooler and sweeter. Hillary has a higher agenda to help her survive the worst bites, kicks, slaps and cuts. She knows she would rise up again in a brand new incarnation to make her betrayer serve her needs.

Is she on a power trip? Be real. Why else would she subject herself to the pit bull attacks waiting in the political arena? Power, yes, but also this: When situations are dire, enterprises failing, businesses stalling, empires falling and extinction is right around the corner, Scorpios get turned on. Only they can walk right down into the Valley of the Lepers with bagels and cream cheese and think nothing of it. Grandiose or not, Hillary believes she can turn the current mess around.

Love her and hate her, you've got to admit she's one of the ballsiest gals ever to ride her bike no hands down Pennsylvania Avenue. Either that or she's plumb out of her cotton pickin' mind.

Some will vote for her just because she's a woman. Many will NOT for the same reason.

In the end, foreign or domestic policies notwithstanding, Scorpio always turns out to be an issue of gender.

Will USA Financial Markets Keep Dropping This Week?

World Financial Markets Fall Steeply on Monday Jan. 21 -- All Eyes are on U.S. Financial Markets for Tuesday Jan. 22 Opening: There will be a Full Moon (enlightenment or tug-of-war) on Tuesday Jan. 22 as U.S. financial markets reopen after the MLK holiday weekend. The Full Moon happens just about 1 hour before the NYSE opens for trading. Later -- after trading -- Mercury unites with Neptune in the sky (potential for vast confusion and chaos of indices nationally and worldwide).

Wednesday Jan. 23 brings a revelatory and yet nerve-wracking Pallas-Uranus convergence in Pisces with an approaching Venus-Pluto conjunction (extreme changes concerning money, assets and wealth) at the very last degree of Sagittarius waiting in the wings -- partially influencing Wednesday trading and then also Thursday Jan. 24 markets.

[Note: The Executive branch of our government and the Federal Reserve Bank need to use their genius -- or whatever is left of it -- to come up with something innovative and striking by tomorrow or January 23 (in concert with Pallas uniting with Uranus in the sky) to calm U.S. financial markets. If not, it is possible that a "free-fall" type scenario may start developing -- plunging the U.S. dollar and the DJIA to new, drastic lows fairly soon. If the FED takes some kind of emergency action to lower interest rates, etc., then this can be a temporary fix and allow the DJIA to rise again, and also help to stabilize world financial markets -- giving a "false prognosis" that the economy can strengthen and that the U.S. dollar is sound, etc. However, eventually this will fall apart due to the sub-prime and world-wide credit disaster in the hundreds of trillions of dollars.]

By Friday night Jan. 25, Pluto enters Capricorn for a "peek" into this key financial sign for 140 days before turning back into late Sagittarius on June 13. Pluto (death and rebirth themes) hasn't been in the final earth sign of Capricorn (civilization; international business and money matters) in 248 years!

Next week is the hellish time -- astrologically -- with Mercury stopping and reversing on Monday Jan. 28 (on the NYSE Pluto placement at 24 Aquarius) while Mars approaches its Wednesday Jan. 30 station and shift forward on the Uranus Discovery placement at 25 Gemini from March 13, 1781 (revolution; shock to the system; explosive volatility). Venus and Jupiter will eventually unite by February 1 -- on the Sun in the Gold Trading chart from Dec. 31, 1974.

2008 Primaries & Beyond: Composites and the Candidates

Date Published: 1/7/2008

At a recent astrological meeting I watched a presentation about Al Gore (he had just won the Nobel Prize)
and much speculation about why he didn’t get elected president in 2000, even though he did.

All the talk circled around his chart and progressions and transits at the time, and despite all the astrolo-
gically informed and well-meaning opinion nobody could find much definitive to say.

It was observed ahead of time that the Election Day aspects were a mess, but why Bush and not Gore?

As previously mentioned in “Celebrity Astrology” the first place to look is not the chart of the leader (or
the potential leader), but of the nation, then the leader.

Those of us looking at the U.S. chart in 2000 were expecting a tremendous diminution of U.S. world power
and reputation arriving shortly thanks to the first-ever Pluto conjunction to the U.S. Ascendant.

The presidential question should have been, perhaps, who is most likely to contribute to the bringing about
of such a dreadful situation? In hindsight, clearly, the appropriate person won, if not the most desirable.

Sometimes you get what’s coming to you, whatever you do. This election the U.S. is at another crossr-
oads, a progressed full Moon, meaning you’ve pushed to your outward limit, which last happened during
the 1979 (hostage) crisis in Iran, and a cycle before then just as the Korean War was about to break out.

Stepping down that order from nation to leader, in 2000 we might also have looked at the relationship of
the leader with the country, to see just what kind of a love affair (and perhaps subsequent hate affair)
might be in store. That’s particularly shown by the composite of the national chart with the leader’s chart.

Looking at that, plus transits around election time and into the first term, will yield a substantive story.
In the case of Bill Clinton, for instance, the composite shows a warm Sun-Moon fire trine and Venus/Mars
straddling the MC. A love affair, for sure, later to become a public sex affair with political but not popular
loss. A 12th house Pluto square the Sun shows the hidden sex and personality that caused the trouble. But, fundamentally, it’s a highly elevated above-the-horizon chart, which is the norm with popular presidents.

G.W. Bush has a similar composite, with that sparky Venus-Mars right up top (but out of sign, uncon-
summated, forget the sex part), and most of the rest of the chart highly elevated as well. The easy
support here is the Moon-Jupiter trine (outgoing, good for business). Bush didn’t need a plan; a smile
would do, leaving the plans to others. It was a natural love affair and Gore’s composite had nothing to
compare except a 12th house Jupiter-Neptune that could later preach “I told you so.”

But again, a Pluto square, in this case to the Mercury and Mars, tells a tale of forcible plans and action
taken without regard to consequences. This time, unlike secret sex, it’s from the 10th to the cusp of
the 2nd so it was something that too many individuals paid for with their lives and the nation and its
public with its money, reputation, influence, and world status, not so easily forgiven.

So what do we have coming up for the primaries, and eventually the final 2008 election?

Among the Democrats, it’s Hillary Clinton or Barack Obama, perhaps John Edwards — and among Republi-
cans so far Giuliani, Romney, and perhaps McCain. Usually, in the primaries, you can tell who’s going to
be in the final race by who’s got the Saturn transits coming into the final stretch, both to the natal and
the composite chart. That’s when the real pressure is on, and Saturn is the one to show it.

Folks who aren’t under pressure then simply aren’t running.

Similarly, it helps to have Jupiter involved as well to give you that boost over the top.

Finally, it’s significant if their degree areas tangled up with the U.S. chart’s natal and progressed, as
that shows continued connection and involvement.

Judging from these factors, you can virtually eliminate Obama, Edwards, Giuliani, and McCain.

Their charts have seen some stress from Saturn in Leo, but that’s over, and it looks like relatively
smooth sailing for them during the final election season. That would not be likely the case if they were
entering a hard-fought campaign and perhaps a set of crises as a world leader afterwards, if elected.
So they will be along for the ride, as supporters.

Hillary has a Pisces Moon that will see Saturn opposition at election time, and her composite chart with
the U.S. is a stellium of Virgo at the MC with a Moon at 10 Pisces, near the progressing U.S. Sun at
4 Pisces which is at progressed full Moon on the election (it’s a big deal election, indeed).

The chart gets both Jupiter and Pluto near the South Node during the campaign as well. Romney natally
has 3 planets in Pisces (including his Sun on Hillary’s Moon!) seeing Saturn opposition, and his U.S. com-
posite has 6 Pisces rising (even closer to the U.S. progressed full Moon) along with Jupiter and Saturn
in Virgo and a Capricorn Moon enjoying a Jupiter transit at the time. The composite has that hypnotic
Venus-Mars conjunction in the 2nd, but it’s not got nearly the number of elevated planets that Hillary’s
composite has, and the composite with the most over the horizon generally wins.

So it looks like a Clinton/Romney clash, though there are enough dark horses around who haven’t been
looked at to make a surprise possible. The issues are all focused around Pisces and Virgo, with more than
a dash of Jupiter and Pluto in Capricorn.

How sophisticated the public will be in fielding them with progressed Sun still rather early in Pisces is
critical. We’re still hovering at the “fool me once, shame on you, fool me twice…well, go on, fool me
again, why not?” level, which will put deceit and flim-flam at the heart of the election.

Another big factor will be whether the Mars-Saturn conjunction of late summer has again found wider
war breaking out in the Middle East (as with the last conjunction), real or manufactured. The fantasy
(Pisces, Neptune) of destruction of fundamental order (Pluto, Capricorn) can sometimes totally ob-
scure the truth, which then can make the very nightmare you’re looking to avoid come true.

The often last-minute trend toward unity and resolution, painted by Saturn finally coming back within
the bowl of the rest of the sky, doesn’t happen until just after the election…

P.S. (1/7/08) The above was written in mid-October, but after the Iowa caucuses in January not much
has changed.

Seductively attractive (he’s got the Venus/Mars conjunction) bass-player Huckabee (for whom no one
has an exact time, making composites dicey) and Obama have both emerged with more attention to
challenge their respective favorites, with everybody sharing a mysterious emphasis on the mid-Scorpio/
Taurus axis, a show of its own (maybe not so mysterious, there being both the transiting Jupiter/Saturn
midpoint and their L4 and L5 points as well, real power attractors).

But neither challenger has the transits in the fall to indicate they’ll still be there, regardless of how well
they do now. Edwards, whose composite Sun with the U.S.A. has Pluto on it all year, will probably be
2008’s retrospective “I told you so” Gore equivalent, for all his efforts. By the time the voters realize
what he was saying, it will be too late.

As for the rest, astrologically, it looks like a contest of wealthy interests changing hands, with a lot of
well-meaning sideliners laid low by the powers that be.

Only Obama is an especial mystery, considering his popularity, as there is little conflict for him in the
fall…where will he be then?...perhaps there are some things that are going to happen this spring and
summer to make it all different.

Remember 40 years ago, in January, how little we suspected what would become of our heroes in a
few short months…The Jupiter-Saturn midpoint that fateful year hovered around the Galactic Center
axis of 26 Sag-Gemini, the progressed Ascendants of both Martin Luther King and Bobby Kennedy…

That’s where Obama’s progressed Ascendant is right now…

                                              PISCES SOLAR FESTIVAL 2008

21 FEB 2008

By Malvin Artley

Greetings friends!

The morning sky before dawn has been stunning over the past month, at least when there has
been no rain. I was out early the other morning to have a look at things and to get bit of a feel
for the energies about the place. Looking toward the East, Jupiter and Venus graced the Eastern horizon—the benefics greeting the rising Sun. What an auspicious symbol, I thought to myself.
I was feeling happy that morning, and seeing those two celestial heralds sitting there gleaming like pearls in the sky only added to my sense of well-being. The prime minister was preparing his land-
mark speech to the nation, I had just had a wonderful celebration of the lunar New Year with a
bunch of my friends, I had received some good news from work and life seemed to be ticking along pretty well, all told. The one thing that really stood out to me on that morning, however, was a
feeling of an absolute clarity of mind, which was only augmented by the view before me. Pluto was
up there, too, just to the left of Jupiter. I could feel him. I knew he was there—the old task master!
(I can think of names I would rather use, but modesty prevents me.) Pluto had been prominent in
my mind in recent weeks, but it had done its work for and on me and I was feeling a lot freer for the efforts. So, my curiosity being satisfied, I said thanks to my old friends and went back inside to pre-
pare for the working day. Mercury was retrograde and my work load was up as a result, true to form. So many broken machines—life is good.

As we saw in the last letter, Pluto will be playing on and with all of us for the remainder of the year. And, with the Sun about to enter Pisces, Pluto’s influence over the next month is particularly highlighted since it is the esoteric ruler of Pisces. There is a lot going on in the undercurrents of world thought and feelings these days. A host of old hurts are coming up to be redressed. Actually, Pisces speaks quite a bit of old wounds and unresolved issues—the little annoying, yet persistent voices that seem to whisper in our ears just below the level of hearing when they are ready to be released. I had been aware of a lot of that for myself of late. I was glad to have a clear head space again. The next few months, especially, are going to be a time wherein many facets of our emotional life will be addressed. We will see the reasons for that in due course. However, perhaps the biggest thing that stands out to me about the month before us and the greater period to come is that fact that there
will be a decided note of restitution in the emotional sphere, with the consequent restoration of a
more balanced and common-sense approach to life. The air is about to be cleared, emotionally speaking, and in a big way. Since I have sent out so much information to you in the past weeks, I
will keep this letter short. With that, let’s get into the dynamics of this full moon, which is also an eclipse, and the dynamics of the Pisces solar festival and period for 2008.

This full moon follows on the tail of a Moon Wobble, the height of which occurred on the 17th of
this month. Moon Wobbles generally indicate emotional strains and stresses and can last for about
a week on either side of the date of exactitude. There will be three more to come this year, with
the others to fall on the following dates: 14 May, 11 Aug and 6 Nov. The August 11th Moon Wobble falls in the middle of the August eclipses of this year. Many of you may already feel the energies of
the coming full moon and eclipse building. The scene has already been set by the precursor of the Moon Wobble and there is a sort of feeling around the place, so-to-speak, that something is about
to happen. The thing about lunar eclipses, which is what this eclipse will be, is that we feel them
more than we do solar eclipses. The Moon represents the feeling/emotional nature and one’s basic needs in life, so we may note that our needs are highlighted by the coming of a lunar eclipse. This
one is a South Node eclipse, so it represents some kind of emotional culmination, completion or
closure depending upon the planets or angles involved or the house in which it occurs with regard
to one’s natal horoscope. Relationship matters are almost always highlighted by lunar eclipses. This particular one is unusual in many regards, however, and we need to have a closer look at it before
we get into the dynamics of the full moon period itself. Along with the preceding points, we should realize that we are about to enter into the high spiritual point of the year with the Aries, Taurus and Gemini solar festivals to come—energy is building, and it is coming from a ‘high place’, i.e., the higher Self.

With regard to the eclipse of 21 Feb 2008, something has to give, does it not? Is that not what
many of us are feeling? This eclipse is of the same family of eclipses (10 North) as the one we just
had on the 7th of this month, so I refer you to Part 2 of the New Year letter for that information,
if you need it. There are two themes at work on top of what has been given about the 10 North
eclipse series, and those themes are indicated by the symbols for the degrees of the Sun and the
Moon in the full moon figure. The symbol for the Sun, bearing the main theme for the solar festival period reads:

“A squirrel hiding from hunters.” 2 Pisces

The basic energy before us with this solar period is one of self-protection, which in many ways
flies in the face of the higher purposes of Pisces, which is about salvation of others, not self-protection. We will have more on Piscean themes in a bit. However, sometimes the wisest path
to salvation is through self-protection from time to time. It would be foolish to put ourselves in
harm’s way unnecessarily or if there is no useful purpose in it. On the other hand, if we are over-
ly self-protective when we should really be ‘down in the thick of it’, then we miss many oppor-
tunities and we may not have the resolution of circumstances or healing we might desire. From
what might we be protecting ourselves, then? That is indicated by the symbol for the degree of
the Moon, which reads:

“A large white cross dominates the landscape.” 2 Virgo.

The symbol for this degree actually speaks of the activation of many of the higher aspects of
Pisces—compassion, wisdom won through hard experience, salvation from suffering and liberation
from the wheel of life and death (samsara). This degree will be particularly poignantly highlighted
for us by what I would call the lord of the eclipse, which is Saturn. Some astrologers might consider that the orb for the Moon/Saturn conjunction is too wide to justify Saturn as the lord, but given
the theme of the lunar degree and the fact that it is a South Node eclipse, I have to take excep-
tion with the general rule of thumb on the matter of eclipse lords. The 10 North series is about communications, however, which is Mercurial, and Mercury rules Virgo, making it the natural lord
of the eclipse. So, this eclipse has overriding themes of both planets—Mercury and Saturn. Mercury has just moved off its station from its retrograde phase, so communications should be starting to clarify from the time of the full moon onwards.

Now, it was mentioned that there were several unusual features to this eclipse, and those
features revolve mainly around Saturn. It is not the usual course of things that Saturn ‘closes’
an eclipse, because Saturn moves so slowly. With this one, however, Saturn is retrograde at
the time of the eclipse, and it will ‘close’ the eclipse within a few short months. There will be
many lessons around ego with this eclipse, and many decisions made as a result. The Sun and
Saturn in combination, especially in tense aspect (conjunction, square or opposition, as in this
case) are known for a propensity to produce struggle and tensions in one’s life. Saturn highlights
ego structures, restrictions and sensitivities (fears), whereas the Sun is one’s vital force and
natural ebullience—quite at odds with the structuring, restrictive force of Saturn. Money and
worldly matters are always a concern when Sun/Saturn combinations are found in a chart, espe-
cially if Saturn is retrograde, as it is here. The Sun/Saturn opposition here can bring feelings of entrapment, anger, despair or frustration—perhaps all of those feelings. The thing about this
eclipse, though, is that we will somehow be called or impelled toward liberation from such feelings. Hence, the theme of the symbol for the lunar degree becomes quite important in this regard and
points to, as Dane Rudhyar has described it, some sort of liberating ordeal, with the result being
that we would have gained a lot of wisdom and compassion for having gone through the experience.

In the eclipse/full moon figure, the Moon is at the midpoint of the South Node and Saturn, all con-
junct by translation of light. This combination is not considered to be a particularly happy one, especially since the South Node and Saturn are involved. The overall key words for the combi-
nation are feelings of inhibition, loneliness, a person standing alone in life and depression. On the
other side of the coin, this combination can also bring with it a profound sense of wisdom and
maturity and a heightened sense of responsibility, which can all be very good so long as there
is no sense of guilt involved with that sense of responsibility. Saturn makes two ‘hits’ of the
eclipse point by transit —the first on the 20th of April (retrograde) and the second on the 16th
of May (direct). However, the activation of the eclipse point by Saturn will cover the time span
of roughly mid-March through the first week of June. Cheers, folks! The last ‘hit’ will bring a final
event or decision regarding whatever situation in which one is involved at the time of the eclipse dynamic. This eclipse is all about emotional realities and freeing ourselves from emotionally re-
stricting circumstances. There is also a strong sense of finality and fate around this eclipse, as
is indicated by Saturn.
