Cargo ship docks with space station
POSTED: 10:48 p.m. EST, January 19, 2007
Story Highlights• NEW: Unmanned Russian ship arrives at space station
• Ship carries 2.5 tons of fuel, food, other supplies
• Two U.S. astronauts, one Russian cosmonaut aboard station

MOSCOW, Russia (AP) -- An unmanned Russian cargo ship docked with the international space station, a spokesman for Russian mission control said Saturday.

The Progress M-59 docked with the station at 5:58 a.m. Moscow time (9:58 p.m. Friday ET), said spokesman Valery Lyndin.

The ship was carrying 2 1/2 tons of fuel, food and other supplies. It had set off Thursday from Russia's main space launch facility at Baikonur, Kazakhstan.

The unmanned Progress and manned Soyuz spacecraft have long been the workhorses of the space station program, shuttling crews and cargo back and forth even while the U.S. space shuttle fleet was grounded.

Two U.S. astronauts and one Russian cosmonaut are aboard the space station.

On Wednesday, fragments of another Russian cargo ship carrying garbage and used equipment from the international space station crashed into the southern Pacific Ocean.
