Preface from

The Parthenon and the Elgin Marbles

Epaminondas Vranopoulos  Athens 1985

"The response to the Greek government's demand for the return to Greece of the sculptures of the Parthenon, now in the British Museum, has been so encouraging that it has given rise to hopes that the Elgin Marbles, as they have come to be known, may indeed one day be restored to their rightful home.
The favourable response has come from UNESCO and from public opinion world-wide, including Britain.

For the time being, however, the British government and the authorities of the British Museum do not agree that the marbles should be returned. They base their stand on the argument that if the Parthenon sculptures were returned, it would set a precedent by which all the great museums of the world would ultimately have to return their treasures to their country of origin.

Nevertheless, this argument cannot apply to the Elgin Marbles because they are an inseparable part of the Parthenon and cannot be compared to such things as Egyptian obelisks, pharaoh's mummies, Mesopotamian tablets or Easter Island monoliths – not even with other Greek masterpieces such as the Winged Victory of Samothrace or the Venus de Milo.

Classical scholars and art historians are unanimous in declaring the Parthenon to be a unique example of Greek classical art. Those who visit it today see it without the sculptures and many are doubtless unaware that they even exist. Yet the marbles and the Parthenon, together, form part of their cultural heritage and they are prevented from appreciating and understanding its architectural value and aesthetic worth to the full."

Thank you, Giovanni!  This is a subject that has been very close to my heart for
many, many years.  These marbles MUST be returned!!!  By putting these pictures
here, I am hoping to help the cause in a small way.

I take it, by your name, that you are Italian.  Can you imagine Rome being robbed
of the Roman Forum?  It would be the same:  Stripping not only Italians of their heritage,
 but also the world.

I feel the same about the antiquities lost by the people of Iraq in this ungodly war.

Yes, Bianca, we Italians are fortunate that we have not had so many British and Amerian scavengers ravaging through our artifacts as have the Greeks, the Egyptians, the Sumerians and all other ancient people of the Mediterranean.  These people are thieves, and they should return all the things that they stole to the countries of origin, especially Egypt, which has had many an artifact pillaged by the greedy British (who think they owe everything).

Thankfully, the Italian government has set a fine example by returning artifacts they stole from Ethiopia during Mussolini's war of colonization. May all governments follow the Italian government's lead.

And American government should be especially ashamed for allowing the looting in the Bagdad musesums during the first days of Iraq War.  Americans, more concerned with protecting the oil industry than they were the heritage of the great cultures between the Tigris and the Euphrates. Of course, what can one expect with uncultured buffoon like George Bush in charge of war planning.  Why Americans elect such an uneducated person to lead them, I do not know.

Italy has returned to Greece the 'Palermo fragment', a marble piece of the Athens Parthenon missing for nearly 200 years, officials said Tuesday.

Greece welcomes home Parthenon marble from Italy

ATHENS (Reuters Life!) - Greece welcomed home a small fragment of the Parthenon marbles on Wednesday and expressed hope the gesture by the Italian government would prompt Britain to return its own prized collection of Greek sculpture.

Italian President Giorgio Napolitano presented Greek authorities with the small piece of broken sculpture, removed from a frieze decorating the ancient Parthenon temple by British diplomat Lord Elgin at the start of the 19th century.

"This is the first step toward healing the wound left on the holy temple by the removal of the Parthenon marbles," Greek President Karolos Papoulias told a news conference in the New Acropolis museum, built to house the marbles.

The fragment, depicting the robe and right foot of the hunting goddess Artemis, has spent two centuries in a museum in Sicily after Elgin gave it to the British consul-general there on his way back to London.

It returned from Italy after 13 years of delicate negotiations by the Greek government, which has long called on Britain to give back scores of priceless ancient sculptures known as the Elgin Marbles taken from the hill-top Acropolis.

The bankrupt Scottish Lord Elgin sold the treasures in 1816 to the British Museum, which still contains roughly half of the 160 meter (yard) frieze which adorned the 2,500-year-old temple.

To applause and cries of "bravo," Napolitano helped to fit the fragment, measuring 35 by 34 centimeters (14 by 13 inches), into a reconstruction of the frieze on the museum's glass-fronted upper hall, parallel to the Parthenon.

Expected to be open to the public next year, the museum was built at the foot of the Acropolis, under the marble temple dedicated to the goddess Athena, which was completed in 432 BC as the crowning glory of Athens' "Golden Age."

Under Italian law, the fragment will be on loan from Sicily's Antonio Salinas museum, but officials said the deal was permanent. Italian officials also said the Vatican museum had agreed to return two pieces from the Parthenon later this year.

"Greece and Italy are often characterized as open-air museums and welcome every year millions of visitors ... For these reasons we cannot accept smuggling of artifacts from their homeland," Napolitano said before inaugurating an exhibit of 74 stolen antiquities recovered by Greece and Italy.

Most of the artifacts in the exhibition came from illegal excavations in Italy and were discovered in museums and private collections in the United States.

The British Museum has refused to return the treasures, which it says were acquired by Elgin under a contract with the Ottoman empire that then ruled Greece.
